I just bought a PC gamepad to play Team Fortress 2.

/facepalm

You only tried it for 5 minutes? Tell me what server you play on so I can rape you with my minigun.

bahaha. Totally opposite. I can't play shooters with two joysticks at all. Mice have the ultimate precision unmatched by a joystick. Reccomendation: Raise the sensitivity of your mouse.

Err no. KB NAO. A track pad is better than a controller. (I use a track pad all the time anyway =.=) 5 minutes really isn't enough time to judge a control scheme either. You can go ahead and use a game pad, but you'll have a likelier chance of winning early on, in my opinion, if you stick with the mouse and keyboard.

Try harder.

If you can hit shit with a mouse + keyboard then you'll do even worse with a gamepad REGARDLESS OF PREVIOUS SKILL!

There is no aim assist.

TF2 IS a very fast moving game, you have to be a very good shot to hit anything regardless of what controller you use. Also if you try to play it like COD you WILL die.

A few tips on aiming (WITH A MOUSE):
-the weapons are NOT hitscan [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitscan], you must lead your target hit where they are GOING to be, not where they are
-use a mouse
-explosive weapons like rockets, fire at the ground around their feet = bigger target
-Use a mouse!
-get a good mouse mat that will not "stick" or "judder" inconsistently as you pan your view around
-USE A MOUSE!
-practice on a game that is less competitive: you dove right in the deep end and like a poor workman is blaming your tools.
-Don't use a gamepad!

General things that affect your aim:
-make sure you actually have a good framerate, otherwise you won't be able to respond quick enough
-play on a server with low ping
-Did i mention to use a mouse instead of a gamepad?

Analogy of what you are doing:

Someone who has never driven a car before enters a car race and keep crashing, so he rides a horse and says "wow, I'm so much better with a horse, clearly a superior vehicle"

No. That someone is just more familiar with a horse and refuses to actually learn how to use a car competently.

Nice to see the M+K players are soooooo humble... oh, and look, some people are using this as a chance to say that PC games are superior to console games, and insulting the OP! Stay classy, PC Gamers of the Escapist...

I do prefer a controller. Then again, I'm not that much of an FPS guy, and FPS games are one of the few games where M+K has a clear advantage. In TF2, I do prefer the M+K, but some people prefer a gamepad. More power to you. Just try to avoid playing Sniper, that's where the difference will actually be noticeable.

No, I don't rightfully feel a controller is the only way to go, considering you can't aim for shit using that bullshit kind of gaming tech. Mouse and keyboard is the only way to go when it comes to FPS' and TPS', once you learn how not to be retarded, you will think the same.

And if only to keep the trend in line, PC gamers are superior. Derp derp.

Single player if you want to use a gamepad on PC is fine. I personally much prefer the feel of a pad than a mouse and keyboard. But the precision offered by the M+K will simply dominate anyone using a pad online on a PC.

This was proved when they tried to make the original Gears of War cross-platform compatible on PC and 360. They dropped the idea when they realized that during the testing of this those playing on the computer were utterly dominating those on Xbox.

Some games I prefer to use a gamepad with (Assassins Creed, things like that) it just feels more comfortable.

FPS, RPG and MMO I have to use a keyboard and mouse. Mouse turning is simply faster and the aiming is a bit more accurate for twitch style play like in FPS.

Holy Christ, I think I just lost faith in people, all people. It doesn't matter what you use, neither is definitively better than the other, It all comes down to what you personally prefer. I am better with a gamepad, than a mouse and keyboard, and I have played, and subsequently destroyed my friend who was used to a M+KB who was using a M+KB and I was using an Xbox 360 gamepad in several games of COD 4.

All fine and dandy until you realize most PC games don't have aim-assist like their console cousins then proceed to realize how much you actually rely on that in console games.
Shh! Most console gamers don't know about aim assit!

It's not exactly and advertised feature, most are able to delude themselves they are just really good with an analogue stick :p

yes, because reading the OP sounds awfully humble

Seriously, I tried the mouse and keyboard thing for about five minutes before I declared it simply unreasonable.

Does anyone else rightfully feel a real controller is the only way to play video games?
and nobody said that pc games are superior, try harder.

Good luck aiming with a real 3D world nudging analog sticks.
I have a PS 2 and a PSP. I like consoles and handhelds. But there should be a law against FPS on analog stick systems - as good as Peace Walker was.

People wil OBLITERATE you on the pc. It's fine for RPGS and such but honestly, M+KB is *standard* for FPS games.
Saying it's "Unreasonable" ...is hilarious.
Heres my argument... I can't stand aiming and turning the camera with the mouse. I feel like I'm playing with a flippin' n64 controller.

I'm actually quite certain that there hasn't been a single incident of any of those in this thread. People are simply stating the obvious: Mouse + keyboard is the only "acceptable" form of control for a PC FPS, especially a fast-moving one like Team Fortress 2.

Controllers are wonderful for platformers, racing games and even some RPGS. But when it comes to FPS, as you said, mouse + KB has a massive advantage, thanks to the vastly increased precision the mouse offers.

OP: Five minutes is not enough time to learn a new control scheme, not by a long shot. As everyone else has said here, playing TF2 (on PC) with a controller is just asking to get your ass handed to you. PC FPS games have zero auto-aim, as a general rule, and you will NEVER get enough precision or speed from a thumbstick to compensate.

Maybe the case, but with a mouse you can adjust sensitivity, or for the axis to switch, or even which button you like pressing. With a controler you have meh sticks. they're pre-programmed to move X units based on how hard you push them. You can get "better", but you will not, ever, *ever* be on the level of a mouse user - someone tried this and the controller guys were viciously annihilated.

Google for stories ilke this, some of them are hilarious.
Yeah, i know, I'm willingly sacrificing accuracy for the sake of keeping from being disorientated.

Nope. Mouse and keyboard are superior in almost every category.

But if you're used to a controller, then you gotta do what you gotta do.

Having always been primarily a console player I do feel more comfortable with a controller. That being said when I play on PC I generally prefer to use keyboard/mouse (unless I'm using an emulator or something). As everyone has said here you can't compete with a keyboard and mouse when it comes to FPS. They just give far greater precision and speed than a controller.

It may seem awkard at first but stick with it and you will eventually get the hang of it. Took me ages when I first started playing CSS to truly get to grips playing with a keyboard/mouse but it's ultimately worth it.

Hmm, inconsistency. It's not humble to point out a well accepted fact.

Look, you can be nice to console gamers as much as you like but only shame will get them to end their foolish ways.

OP deserves to get called out for saying he tried something for the first time for 5 minutes and dismiss it at that. And did he take that point to say "Should I get a gamepad?", instead he just started a thread "so I got a gamepad" and a question the hight of ignorant arrogance:

"Does anyone else rightfully feel a real controller is the only way to play video games?"

wow

Seems to be a resounding no.

The only FirstPersonView game i get disoriented in is Portal (due to the shift of perspective when you do jumps and get out in a weird angle on the other side)

Everything else i simply change the mouse-sensivity on a comfortable level and bam.

it:s your choice how you want to play, but deeming the "usual" control scheme unreasonable is...well unreasonable.

There you go. Is that hard enough?
Edit: WOW and he makes an even more arrogant post as I wrote this...

Anyway, about the new thing in the OP: It takes a big of getting used to, but don't give up on M+K in just 5 minutes. Adjust the sensitivity, make sure you have room to move the mouse around and practice practice practice. Still, if you're more comfortable with a gamepad, don't worry about what these people have to say. Play how you want to play.
