"Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind"

It was the first anime movie I ever saw as a child (mind you it was called "Warriors of The Wind" at the time and was heavily censored version). While it has the Miyazaki charm about it, it is fairly dark (by his standards) though it is ultimately triumphant and uplifting.

Way back in 2002 I remeber my dad taking me to see a movie called spirited away, now I was only 8 or 9 so at the time I didn't understand the movie and it was my first exposure to japanese culture, I liked the art but after leaving had no clue what happened, though recently while in tesco, I saw the movie in a bargin bin, immediatly recognised it and bought it. After watching this I want to kill my childhood self, it was beutiful, moving and just a pleasure, now I want to ask if anyone else could recommend another movie from Hayao Miyazaki it would be greatly appreciated and if anyone could tell me of a similar experience, thanks

Tesco, huh?....

did you take your hood off?

I'm going to echo those who reccomended Princess Monoke, Porco Rosso is also another of my favorites. I'm suprised no one has mentioned Pom Poko, its a beautiful movie, and at the same time very moving.

If you liked the animation style, The Cat Returns is one of the newer works and is a charming story about nothing inparticular.

Enjoy your new discovery and let no-one else question you over your choice :D
Sir you are a legend "The Cat Returns" is a one of the finest films of our time, and it has some extremely high class voice acting in the english dub, always a novelty in a japanese anime. Also the prequel( i suppose you could call it that) is very good too. Furthermore to the OP i agree that spirited away is excellent and well worth a watch.

I saw a bit of Spirited Away on Film4 once, but I didn't get into it. Maybe its because I tuned in about halfway through. If I see it cheaply, then I might pick it up.

Spirited away was good, although the first part with the carnival and the parents turning into pigs scared the piss outta me..

I liked Howls Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke better though.

EDIT: I also liked My Neighbor Totoro.. If not just because of the Cat Bus.

In no specific order:

Howls Moving Castle,

Tales of Earthsea,

Nausicaa of the valley of the winds,

Mononoke Hime.

Most of the films are wonderful pieces of art, but these 4 are ones I remember well.

If you want something darker and less happy, try "Grave of Fireflies" from the same studio. Be forewarned: This film makes Chuck Norris cry.

[edit] Laputa should also be in there!

[edit2] Also I forgot Totoro. This is just to point out that they are all great in their own little ways.

About Totoro, this is something about a Japanese Legend. Don't read this spoiler if you like the story as it is.

Totoro is considered a Death god. Whenever a person comes into contact with Totoro, they are no longer able to go back to living a normal life and are dead. Notice how the children do not have a shadow after meeting Totoro? Also notice how when the film ends, they are sitting on the tree with Totoro instead of in their houses.

Also the Cat bus, while made up for this film, can only be ridden be the souls of the dead.

Don't misinterpret that Totoro is in any way bad. He is considered a kind god. (This is according to my friend IRL who is from Japan).

I can offer you a book: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
I don't recall writing that book...

Anyway, Howl's Moving Castle is another of his films. It has the voice of Christian Bale, the man who nutted up on the set of Terminator.

What exactly is it about? I didn't get it.
There's nothing to "get" about it. Unlike Disney movies, there is no underlying message or lesson to learn; it's just a wonderful fairytale. There are a lot of growing of age memes to be found throughout the movie and everyone reflects upon the ties to their own childhood in different ways.

One of the best books I've read this year. Nice to see a mention of it here.

Besides the struggle between man and nature and their inability to find a balance between the two, right?

I recommend Princess Mononoke. Right now. Don't even finish reading this post, just watch it.
