I got my console back in 7 days.
It won't take 3 months.

Just send it away and don't void your warranty.
Same story and advice.

Also, check out http://support.xbox.com. I mean, I assume you know what the red ring of death is, but just in case, not every red light error means "your box is hosed".

There are ways, and kits you can buy, but these ways and kits are a little finicky. It would be better to just send the thing in for repair... it sucks, yes, but you want a good job done, then send it in.

I'm not sure about the errror code. how much will it cost if the warranty ran out, mine was only good for a year.
Call them, tell them what it is doing/what lights are on. Depending on what's actually wrong, they'll either tell you what to do, or they'll ask for your serial number. It could be under one of their blanket extensions. If not, they'll tell you how much before sending you the return box.

Make sure it's actually the RRoD, it could just be overheating or have a poorly connected power or A/V cord. It's all about what sections are lighting up.

this is very true. me and a few friends were setting up a party and someone i wont mention (gary) forgot to plug the av cable into the back of the box. when i turned it on it gave me 4 red lights. i nearly died of shock and fear before i realized the RRoD is 3 red lights. i punched him.

I always buy the store's warranty. It sucks paying extra but since I'm on my 6th 360 it's paid off in the long run. I guess.

If ever meet the guy who decided to ship the 360 with a near 100% failure rate, I will choke him.
You are on your sixed 260? Good God, they weren't lying about that 56% failure rate.

The days of 3 month waits are done, it took a total of 8 days for me to get my system back. I sent it out on a Monday, had it back the next Tuesday.
my friend gort it recently, he had to wait 3 months, maybye its different where I live, and I don't know how to find the error number.
It won't be 3 months, they suggest 2-3 weeks at most, but thats probably unlikely, you'll probably get it back in about a week.

Although, mine has done the same thing, but i have no fucking clue what to do about sending it back as Microsoft and UPS are telling me different things. ARGH!!!! Me so confused!!!

I should point out I've also had to replace my original PS3 as well. I have total crap luck with consoles. Only 1 Wii so far though. Of course it hasn't been played in so long it could be dead and just no one noticed.

The warranty gets extended to three years if you get the RROD.

Send it in and don't void the warranty. Microsoft didn't give you that 3 year warranty for nothing.
See when someone gives that long a warranty "There may be trouble ahead!"

Well you should know, most all 360s are cowards. They will bend to your will if you threaten them enough. Take out a hatchet, and use the blunt side to hit the face for about 5 minutes. If its still RRoDing, then take the actual sharp side and just whack it for about 10 minutes. If it still doesnt work, you need to get a new XBox friend.

send it in for replacement, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES DO THE TOWEL TRICK, it works only a few times and violates the warranty.

In short, yes.. but only if you know what you're doing, and are willing to sacrifice your warranty. I had a mate fix mine and it's fine to this day. Relatively simple fix, but you need some knowhow to do it.

Honestly, I don't understand why people keep using a product that is clearly defective by design.

Or rather, the design itself, not a faulty or wrongly manufactured component, is the source of the problem.

It's not like you can't play games on other consoles if you are into console gaming and for microsoft products there is always Windows.

If I'd buy a TV for example and had to ship the entire thing back for warranty several times, I'd seriously not only consider alternatives but would have also tossed that defective TV out, demanded compensation from the retailer and made myself a big reminder to not buy that manufacturer's products for the next few years.

Would you consider it normal if your bike broke down from a design flaw with over 50% propability? your microwave oven? Stereo set? Accidents and faulty components are one thing, functionality compromising design solutions/component choices are entirely another.

There's a TEMPORARY way to fix the Xbox. It works, but i wouldn't recommend it as a permanent solution. I don't know what manner of fire hazard it presents, but mine didn't combust or anything. Better yet, MS still replaced it, so it doesn't void the warranty, either.

1) Unhook everything from your Xbox apart from the power cable. This includes faceplate and HDD.
2) Wrap it in a bunch of towels, block the ventilation holes.
3) Turn it on
4) Leave it on for half an hour.
5)Unwrap it, turn it off.
5) Leave it to cool for 30 minutes to an hour. A windowsill is a good idea.
6) Hook everything back up. Turn it on.

It works for roughly FIVE DAYS (it did for me). In that time, it rarely crashes except for when your time's nearly up. I expect you can do this indefinitely, except that it would eventually degrade and destroy.

I got that one from CheapAssGamer.
