I just saw Red Dawn. I can't for the life of me figure out why they didn't just rename it Homefront.

Seriously. North Korea was added in later, it was originally China, but that was digitally altered because of complaints. North Korea doesn't have the resources to actually attack a functional America, unless assets such as drones, radar systems, et cetera were knocked out. Thus, EMP, Nukes, the occasional North Korean Sabotage Rat Brigade. They all explain why a backwoods country, which could probably cough and kill 100 of its own citizens, is able to attack the current military leader in the world. Unless it's in twenty years. Then... Nope. No change.

Well, to be honest, the whole scenario is really rather stupid, isn't it? Homefront must've been the silliest, projectingest bit of fiction I've seen for a long time, so I doubt the film version will be able to be much worse in that department.

It's rather hilarious to see North Korea being pumped up to this future superpower for marketing reasons, though.

Actually the hung-ho American nationalism that made the original one what it was is absent in the remake. While they don't go deep into it, they make a point to draw comparisons between the Wolverines and Mujahadeen and friends against the Americans.

Simple Red Dawn is better known than Homefront. The 1st Red Dawn was cult classic for a long time and was watched by a far greater number of people than ever played homefront.

Short answer, yes and yes.

Long answer. It's a remake of a movie from the 1980's about a Soviet invasion. The remake was originally going to feature the Chinese against the US, but China spends money on movies, so they changed it to North Korea, who just gets propaganda out of the fact that it's a US produced movie that talks smack about North Korea.

For a second there, I was about to meme it up and call it Best Korea.

Whole thing looked like absolute tripe from the trailers. The reviews reflect that impression. Overall I couldn't have given less of a crap what they named it, but now I know to avoid Homefront at least (not that I ever had interest in it to begin with).

It's already been discussed, but the very short answer is there is a lot of money in the market for pre-middle-aged men reliving their 1980's nostalgia. It has been milked a great deal by Hollywood, with every property from the 1980's seeming to get a remake, reboot, adaptation, or re-imagining.

In the wake of the financial success of these movies, anything that can be recognized by a significant fraction of men aged 25-40 has a decent chance of being bought up and recycled. And just about every member of that group, myself included, is going to remember this.

Red Dawn is a 1984 property which has "nostalgia cred" for that market.

Edit: I should add that I am speaking about the American market. I strongly doubt that movie has similar appeal cross-culturally.

The movie originally was against a Chinese enemy supported by Russia.

Citing concerns about pissing people off, the movie was altered in post-production to change the enemy to a North Korean invasion. During this time, the publisher (went bankrupt?) and had to postpone the movie.

The movie was made before Homefront, though I'm not sure when the changes were made in relation to Homefront's release.

Edit: On topic, Red Dawn was filmed literally across the street from me in the state-owned woods that fill about a third of my township. I got to see the sets in person and everything. It's pretty cool, in my opinion.
