Wait so they ban women instead of misogynistic douches to solve the problem? Hello virgin sausage fest.

Just wow, thats all I have to say wow. Though I agree the idea is completely moronic, a part of you can?t help but smile at the fact someone did this, its so far removed from what sane people would do!

Still the way to fix it, just zero tolerance on sexism and have some sort of flagging system, job done.

Anyway the event managers have won, look at the press they are getting loads of dudes will turn up win, win for them.

Who cares? This is a private event. The organizers can do whatever they want. They have total and absolute control over who is allowed to attend their event. What? Are people not allowed to CHOOSE who THEY want in a private event? Maybe people don't have control over their private events in some European countries, but in American countries, people kind of have this right to choose who they admit to their private event.

Besides, think about what happened if we flipped the gender of this whole incident. Would anyone care? Would anyone think its sexist? Would the OP had made a thread about how the event is perpetuating misandry? To be quite forward, it's sexist that people think men can't have the freedom to form a gender-exclusionary event if they so choose, since if women had done this, people would not care. This entire thread just goes to prove the existence of the tons of double standards that exist in society, and the problems facing men in modern society. It's fucking despicable. Hell, 50 bucks says that if this was a female only event, people would be running around fucking praising how it is "PROGRESSIVE" or some shit; yet when men do it, it's sexist. I hate society sometimes...

So they ban women from attending to avoid dealing with the issue, while simultaneously telling their (remaining) customers that this is because they think they're a bunch of immature misogynists?

...Would have loved to sit in on that marketing strategy meeting.

Us pesky women really are the problem, being all harassable and such.
The sad part is that this is what they are basically saying. "We don't want women complaining to us at the event, we don't want the possibility of a harassment suit, and our main demography is guys so out you go."

This smacks of not wanting to upset attendees by calling them out on bad behavior and immaturity. Its like they want to foster all that stuff that makes online gaming so very very bad. Being honest sexist comments are one of the main things, are they banning black attendees because there is a lot of the "N" word throw around too, and what about gay attendees? Lots of "gay" this and that about. I don't think that this was very well thought out.

About the dzen times it's been pointed out already. The issue isn't that it's a men only event, the issue is that they combatted the problem of assholes being assholes by banning the people who would take issue with them being assholes. XBL can pretty racist, think they're going to ban black people to avoid them being offended?

I'll go ahead and quote one of the comments on the Kotaku page:

"I'd like to point out that no one, more than likely, would raise a fuss if it was an all girls/women event. There's a lot of hypocrisy and double standard in the world of sexism."

There's a lot of truth to this, and the matter of fact is that it's a private function with a reservation fee. They have the right to do what they want.

Now personally, I don't see the point in attending an event such as this if the only people I can mingle with are male. But to each their own.
That comment caught my eye as well.

The private function and the fee do indeed grant them the rights to do what they want, but that doesn't mean that the female gaming population (and those who support them) have to be happy about the change.

If you want my honest opinion on the matter, excluding girls from that event is only likely to make the problem worse.

So basically they are afraid of women, OK then! Ladies, by the sounds of it this is not a huge loss for you.

That is so ridiculous I actually thought this was going to be a joke thread when I saw it.

WHO CARES? This is THEIR EVENT. It's not your event, or an event hosted by this website, but THEIR EVENT. THEY get to choose. THEY don't care what you think. The organizers have EVERY SINGLE RIGHT to do this. It doesn't matter what you think of the event, since you are not an organizer of the event, nor are you probably going to attend the event. Stop shoving your beliefs about what is "right" or how this is a "bad depiction of gamers" down these individuals throats, and allow them to exercise their right to make their event exclusionary if they so choose. RESPECT their right to do this.

GET OVER YOURSELVES PEOPLE. THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO IT. YOU ARE JUST AS BAD AS THEM FOR NOT RESPECTING THEIR FREEDOM OF SPEECH, AS WELL AS THEIR FREEDOM TO DO WHATEVER THEY WANT WITH THEIR PRIVATE EVENT. IF IT IS AS BAD AND PATHETIC AS YOU THINK IT IS, THEN THE MATURE THING TO DO IS TO RESPECT THEIR RIGHT TO DO IT, AND NOT ***** ABOUT IT ON THE INTERNET. THE LATTER IS JUST IMMATURE.
Calm down before you get a stroke. Nobody, and I repeat, nobody has disputed their right to hold such an event; it's just their reasoning we think is retarded. Which it is--very, very retarded.

When your own freedom infringes upon someone else's for no good reason, you have forfeited that protection.

After reading some of the other comments I have no problems with it being a male-only event. What I have a problem with is that they are trying to justify it, and justify it an an asinine and mysoginistic way. If they had it a male-only event 'just because boys-night-out' then I wouldn't like it much, but I would at least respect their choice.

Also I feel I should point out to you that our own freedom allows us to ***** about it all we want.

Its like the Stalinist method of dealing with things-"If you have a man, you have a problem, if you remove the man, you remove the problem"!

Jesus, you do know that capitalization can be used for emphasis, right?

Anyways, if you want to be mature about this, then say "I respect their right to do this as well as justify it however we want, but disagree" and leave it at that. Calling these people names and insulting them for wanting to have control over who attends their private event and say whatever they want is downright pathetic. There's nothing TO discuss in this thread, to be honest, since the whole "I respect their right to do what they've done, but disagree" is really the only proper way to reply. Well, by proper I mean mature.

MGlBlaze said:

Considering that this is a PRIVATE event, this isn't infringing on anyone else's freedom. If this was a public event, then yes, that statement would be true; but this is a private event, so no rights are infringed by controlling admittance. What? Are you implying that you can sue me for violating your rights for not inviting you to poker night at my house? Step back and think about what you just said about the rights thing. It's a private event. The only rights being infringed here is the party's in question by you, for refusing to respect them wanting to control admittance to this event.

And yes, I know that you have the right to ***** about it, but that doesn't make you any less immature than the people hosting this event. Step back for a second, get over yourself, and respect their right to do this, as well as to justify it however they want, and you'll come out as being the more mature party in this entire thing.

Firstly, I totally agree with what the first commenter in the article says:

"I'd like to point out that no one, more than likely, would raise a fuss if it was an all girls/women event. There's a lot of hypocrisy and double standard in the world of sexism."

At the end of the article they rephrase the stance of the event, saying it's more of a male-centred party than a "BAN THE WOMENZ" party. Therefore, I have no problem with this.

'Or maybe the answer here is to forbid that kind of obnoxious behavior, and kick out anyone who breaks the rule, $49 registration be damned. Or maybe this event is more about the comfort of the organizers than the participants.'

Yeah, that pretty much sums up my perspective on the situation. What they should be doing is kicking out the knuckle dragging shitheads that atttend, but that would be inconvenient for the organisers as they'd most likely have to cut off about half their attendies in doing so.

The stroke part was a joke....

I don't respect their right to do this, others may. At best, I tolerate their right to do this.

If this was a women only event no one would complain at all.

But of course, partially thanks to our feminist friends, a men only event receives a giant shitstorm.

Your hipocrisy is disgusts me.

Perhaps this is the way to go, if we want to lure more women into gaming?
Tell the feminists that gaming just isn't their thing and then denies them entrance from our events.
