These people are hardly idiots. I disagree with you. Just because they don't have a world view that aligns with your own doesn't mean they are idiots.
There's a distinction here. The attendies who displayed misogynistic attitudes are idiots as they harbor a backwards patriarchal view towards women. Anyone who immediately blurts out derogatory obscenaties towards someone because of their gender is an idiot. The organisers on the other hand I don't believe to be idiots, they're just spineless. They don't want to kick out what is most likely the majority of their paying customers, they don't want to cause a fuss, if they let women attend but kicked out the regulars it would cause a rift/tension within the group. But if they make it all male, then they're more likely to keep everyone who is their happy. Basically they took the easiest and most profitable solution, they didn't want to risk upsetting the harmony of the group by banning those members for the way they behaved.

Besides, does the media report on sexism against males? Does it report against racial violence against whites? Does it report on discrimination as a whole against non-minorities?
I can't speak about where you're from, but in the UK there are plenty of Conservative minded newspapers that ***** about this sort of thing all the time, constantly whining about the 'PC Police' and that sort of thing. People went on for years about the Madeline McCann story. Small and adorable white girl goes missing and everyone panics, plenty of African children dying of starvation and nobody bats an eye. From where I'm standing white males have it fucking easy and that's coming from a white male.

Oh, and they had 100% of the right to do this, no one can raise their voice at them etc etc.
Of course we can. Because it's a stupid, sexist solution. Just because they have the legal right doesn't mean they should get away with being outright cowards.

Combatting the alleged rampant misogyny in order to create a more pleasant atmosphere for all participants would be the reasonable course of action.
I honestly don't see how this is misogyny. Their words and their actions never once stated a distaste for women.

In fact they seem to be criticizing themselves. How they solved the problem of themselves is ludicrous, but in the end was serving their larger demographic-- shy men who would get their asses handed to them physically and verbally by most women.

Say hypothetically, all men got banned from a "my little pony" convention in order to prevent the girls from ganging up on the boys and stealing their fluttershy dolls... I an sure that there would be a lot of young men on this site who would be very upset.

Why should the targets of bad behavior get banned rather than the perpetrators. Do then intend to lock us women in our houses so we won't be targeted for sex-related crime? Last time I checked this wasn't the dark ages.

This is not cool. Not at all cool. You don't do this kind of thing. You do not side with the people causing the problem over the ones who have not done anything. That is not right.

This is depressing. It wont solve the problem of people harrassing women in the gaming community at all.
Still, its their event.

But of course, partially thanks to our feminist friends, a men only event receives a giant shitstorm.

Your hipocrisy is disgusts me.
It's really difficult to read a few responses before writing your own and leaving? Because, this has been said and addressed. The point is not in male-only event, it's their justification that they're doing it to "protect" women. "You'd most likely be offended and insulted, so just don't come" - how is that going to solve problems with offending and insulting women? It's their choice and their right, but like this, they will forever be forced to exclude a fairly decent amount of players and fans from events. Women are not the problem here; assholes and intolerant pricks are. So, for the sake of the community, why don't they ban assholes instead of women? It could be a very simple rule; "Behave as an asshole to someone, and you're out". But it's easier to just ban women, because you don't need so much effort. It's the easy way out. Well, actually, it's not the way out at all. It's temporary ignoring the problem and, in essence, letting it linger still in the society.

Our feminist friends are the reason I am allowed to go to college, drive or leave the house. Men never had those restrictions, so before you go on about hypocrisy, please, refer to the ancient stereotypes and restrictions that women were facing up until a few decades back (and are still facing in many countries around the world). Do we still need to face them? It's the 21st century, and people think the problem will be solved if they just tell women "Well, it's better if you just don't come. Actually, how about not being a fan of games? You'd have much less problems and restrictions if you just didn't enjoy 'men-stuff'. Thank you for your co-operation".

This "solution" is the epitome of ignorance and the reason why there still is sexism. People with reasoning like this are why we are constantly having these types of conversations. Men's night out? Go ahead. Men's night out because they can't control sexist, intolerant idiots? Fail. It's their right, but I believe they are not really aware that they're actually just prolonging and justifying the problem, instead of removing it.

If some women did the same thing with the same justification, it would be just as bad. It's just that men-hating has not been that prevalent in the society, ever in history. It's mostly just sporadic events of extremist hardcore man-haters. Women-hating was something that denied women their basic human rights for thousands of years (and in some cases, still exists). Context is very important because this is not just some arbitrary "double-standard".

It's their right to have this, and as others have said it's no more sexist than womens-only events. Of course, I find those repugnant and deeply damaging to society as well, but then that's true of so many things that are and should be perfectly allowable. If people want to go somewhere where they can be alone with their sexism, let them.

About the dzen times it's been pointed out already. The issue isn't that it's a men only event, the issue is that they combatted the problem of assholes being assholes by banning the people who would take issue with them being assholes. XBL can pretty racist, think they're going to ban black people to avoid them being offended?
WHO CARES? This is THEIR EVENT. It's not your event, or an event hosted by this website, but THEIR EVENT. THEY get to choose. THEY don't care what you think. The organizers have EVERY SINGLE RIGHT to do this. It doesn't matter what you think of the event, since you are not an organizer of the event, nor are you probably going to attend the event. Stop shoving your beliefs about what is "right" or how this is a "bad depiction of gamers" down these individuals throats, and allow them to exercise their right to make their event exclusionary if they so choose. RESPECT their right to do this.

GET OVER YOURSELVES PEOPLE. THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO IT. YOU ARE JUST AS BAD AS THEM FOR NOT RESPECTING THEIR FREEDOM OF SPEECH, AS WELL AS THEIR FREEDOM TO DO WHATEVER THEY WANT WITH THEIR PRIVATE EVENT. IF IT IS AS BAD AND PATHETIC AS YOU THINK IT IS, THEN THE MATURE THING TO DO IS TO RESPECT THEIR RIGHT TO DO IT, AND NOT ***** ABOUT IT ON THE INTERNET. THE LATTER IS JUST IMMATURE.
Congratulations for missing the point entirely.

I combat this facepalm with THIS!

I honestly don't know what to say. I know it's their right, and they can do this if they want, but they're removing the victim of misogyny, but the cause. If there's a leak in the pipe, you don't put a bucket under the leak. You fix it (Well, you might put a bucket for now, but you better fix it soon; I'm using a metaphor). And I agree with some past comments; there's many male-only events. But boys-only schools don't say they're doing it to combat misogyny. The same goes if this were a female-only event; it would be ridiculous to say they're female-only to combat Misandry (In case any of you don't know, that's the hatred of men).

How to fix the problem? They can be an all-male event, but don't say you're combating Misogyny, because that will cause a lot of disagreement of the event. And perhaps it would be better to START OFF as an all-male event, because when you kick out the women, surely there will be hell.

This is the least-opinionated response I have.
So what if they just decided to host it as a male-only event? They would still have been called on for being misogynistic by gamers who felt that segregation based on gender. But whatever, dual standards in sexism particularly is FUN!

And again, I will point out the issue isn't the "Men only" part. The issue is with the "Women will cause trouble if they hear misogynistic assholes being misogynistic assholes... those fucking killjoys" reasoning behind why they are doing it.

Try actually reading before putting on your crusading hat.

Try the same concept with other issues. "Let's end racism by banning other races!" "Let's end homophobia by banning gay people!" "Let's end the class divide by banning the poor!"

As many others have pointed out elsewhere, the problem isn't that the event is male-only. It's that the organisers have decided to change it to become male-only (i.e. decided to ban and exclude women) because of the history of misogyny and harassment of women at such events. They are punishing the victims, not the perpetrators, of bigotry, and that is in itself extremely bigoted.

No hypocrisy here, just justified anger at the choice to punish people for the poor treatment those people are receiving.

interesting how many claim that "if women did the same there would be no fuzz" while I know of several similar occations with women trying to exclude men and whole hell broke loose...

it is the typical reversed sexsism, kind of a maleism, that can feel exactly as silly and extreme as some cases of feminism

I for one disapprove of anything that excludes another group, it is inclusion that strengthens and creates understanding for one another, as I've said to several feminist gamers: "there is no point in excluding the other part of humanity for the sake of removing tension and sexsism from an event, it only widens the rift between you, ailienating you from each other creating an us and them, this is the foundation of sexsism and these kinds of exclusive events only hurt the cause you fight for"

same goes for any group concerning gender, nationality and sexuality.

better to keep a general policy of zero tolerance for ignorant and intolerant behaviour.

"I'd like to point out that no one, more than likely, would raise a fuss if it was an all girls/women event. There's a lot of hypocrisy and double standard in the world of sexism."
Couldn't have said better, first poster in original article. It's like the all girl trains in Japan... nobody complains about them, and the few that do are labeled molesters and rapists.
Anyway, I don't support any "only x gender/race/sexuality" gatherings and services, but I find that people only ever get mad when its "Only men" or "Only white people" while they turn a blind eye to "Only women" and "Only x race."
Edit: Plus... honestly, female gamers here, how many girls do you think would actually pay ~$50 to play BF3? They wouldn't get as much money if it was females only so, in the interest of making more money they probably did the right banning if any banning was to be made.

Wow, even the Enclave were never this dumb.

Enclave Officer: "Man, I really hate post-war mutations."

Eden: "Then get rid of the super mutants."

Enclave Officer: "...Brilliant!"

In all seriousness, I know exactly how to kill misogyny. Tell them it's how they catch the gay. I guarantee you that even if it makes no sense, those guys will be too paranoid to do their thing.
