Those defending the organisers are missing the point.

if it had been announced as a guys only thing NO-ONE WOULD HAVE CARED OR NOTICED.

The fuss is how they decided to say it was guys only because they were 'protecting' women from misogynists - IE, punishing the victim, not their attacker.

Couldn't have said better, first poster in original article. It's like the all girl trains in Japan... nobody complains about them, and the few that do are labeled molesters and rapists.
Anyway, I don't support any "only x gender/race/sexuality" gatherings and services, but I find that people only ever get mad when its "Only men" or "Only white people" while they turn a blind eye to "Only women" and "Only x race."
the all women trains in japan are because the Japanese government don't want to make all the Japanese men who think its their god given right to molest women on trains realise that what their doing is, you know, a BAD THING.

I think you need to respect their right to do this if you are an American. If you aren't, then you are totally okay in just "tolerating" it, since your country most likely has a very different cultural outlook on this sort of thing. But as an American, I find it important that other Americans respects anyone's right to say or do what they want (within reason), as all these freedoms are truly only tested when we allow and respect someone saying or doing something that we find reprehensible.

Hey, if people didn't respect people's right to freedom of speech, then that big SCOTUS case for video games would have ended very differently. It was only through respect of other people's freedoms and rights that the case turned out in our favor. But this is getting off-topic...

No one is saying these people don?t have the right to ban woman from their event. but it?s the job of the people and the media to point out when people are being racist homophobic or sexist so shit like this won?t happen again .
So yes these people should be told they are idiots
These people are hardly idiots. I disagree with you. Just because they don't have a world view that aligns with your own doesn't mean they are idiots.

Besides, does the media report on sexism against males? Does it report against racial violence against whites? Does it report on discrimination as a whole against non-minorities? Until society views sexism against males equally as disdainful as sexism against females, for example, then I think your assessment of the media is ultimately flawed, and leaves it as nothing more than a machine to push a very, very biased set of ideas.

Ultimately, we need respect what this group of people are doing, and how they choose to justify it. You might disagree with it, but you shouldn't let that disagreement make you think that they shouldn't be allowed to have a exclusive private event, nor that they shouldn't be allowed to justify that exclusion however they want.
*sighs* I'm going to say this.

I believe in the right for freedom of speech, but people should know when they're crossing it.

Just because you may have the right to do something, it doesn't always means you should do it.

And yes, these people are idiots for doing such a thing.

Finally! Gaming was going to the dogs.

Does everyone here remember when gaming used to be considered exclusively a male hobby?
When we would skulk in the shadows and occasionally emerge from the depths of our basements and congregate at LAN parties where the only female in proximity would be maybe staff making us snacks?

This is a return to that enlightened age, when nerd manchildren were nerd manchildren, stereotypically incapable of having any relations with the opposite gender and having no social graces whatsoever and the only female voices we would hear are that of our mothers nagging us that dinner is ready after a long hard day of griefing n00bs on runescape.

Yeah, but they also refuse to make the whole train system segregated. THAT would probably work even better, because women still end up in carriages with pervs. Also, police handling of these cases are beyond awful if you're the man. So, to protect women and men (its not exactly uncommon for women to baselessly accuse men of perving when there was no such action going on) it would make sense to have equally good (desegregated trains are shite) trains serving each gender.

Edit: Plus... honestly, female gamers here, how many girls do you think would actually pay ~$50 to play BF3? They wouldn't get as much money if it was females only so, in the interest of making more money they probably did the right banning if any banning was to be made.
I'm now up to fourteen people who missed the point entirely. That's almost enough for a Fox News.

Well if the laws in the country its in allow it i don't see why they shouldn't, saves them a whole lot of possible trouble and it's not like the organisers are the problem it's the gamers themselves.

I know its horrible and it shouldn't be a problem in the first place but you can't blame the organisers for not wanting to deal with all the issues its gonna bring.

And the solution for poverty and world hunger is to feed the poor to the hungry. Glad to see somebody gets how it's supposed to work.
*deadpan stare*

Forgive me for not giving two shits about this, but its a party run by an independent group, not some kind of government or public sponsored thing. Private citizens can do as they please.

Ok, can one of you please point out to me where they state that they are doing this to either:

A) "Fight misogyny/sexism," or
B) "Protect women"

I don't see where they are claiming to do either.
Come on, people, this is a bit of CYA and nothing more.

FTA: "Nothing ruins a good LAN party like uncomfortable guests or lots of tension, both of which can result from mixing immature, misogynistic male-gamers with female counterparts," and, "Though we've done our best to avoid these situations in years past, we've certainly had our share of problems."

Maybe I'm misunderstanding this, but from what I gather: In past events, the majority of their audience is made of immature, racist/sexist males. In past events, one female attendee may have taken offense, and sued for sexual harassment. For future events, they will protect themselves legally by not allowing female attendees.

No...I don't think they are telling women to "Get back in the kitchen."
No...I don't think they are trying to combat sexism.

Again, this just seems like some good old 'Cover Your Ass.' They don't want to deal with lawsuits, which they seem to have dealt with in the past, so they are taking steps to prevent it.
I guess another option would have been to have female attendees sign a waiver saying, "You will most likely be sexually harassed, don't sue us." Would that have been better?

Edit - Its the same kind of sexism as requiring female cops/soldiers/guards to handle female detainees. It isn't that they feel that "Women are too soft and fragile to handle a big strong man patting them down." .....Fuck no, they just don't want to get sued.

I think the ban is pointless because, in terms of shooters, anyone with a gun is genderless to me. You want to talk shit? Talk with bullet. Bullet hurt like words.

Again, if they had just announced this as a guys only event, no-one would have cared. And yeah, its a 'cover your ass' decision, but the way it is announced comes off as 'sorry girls, your not the ones doing wrong, but we're going to ban you instead of them', which is a very backwards way of doing things.

Alright, point out every flaw in my assessment of "Ok... I think I see where this came from."
Also, you may not have noticed, but in my edit I pointed out what I figure the real reason was that they chose to ban WOMEN [victims] and not men [offenders]: PROFIT and them knowing they will have decent turnout if its women that aren't allowed in.

I'll go ahead and quote one of the comments on the Kotaku page:

"I'd like to point out that no one, more than likely, would raise a fuss if it was an all girls/women event. There's a lot of hypocrisy and double standard in the world of sexism."

There's a lot of truth to this, and the matter of fact is that it's a private function with a reservation fee. They have the right to do what they want.

Now personally, I don't see the point in attending an event such as this if the only people I can mingle with are male. But to each their own.
I agree with every word in this quote.

I would never attend this, not because they are "unfair to women", but rather because, like the person I'm quoting, would not want to attend such an event. Hell, I don't even want to attend ANY kind of LAN anymore.

I don't think this is something to be upset about. I know I wouldn't care if they hosted a "female only" LAN in my city or anywhere else.

Let's end the class divide by banning the poor.
Is this not the premise of country clubs?

But I digress, this is no more than a few boys making a clubhouse and saying no girls allowed. Its a private event, and if you want to be able to tell sexist jokes without having to worry that is there perogative.

Now before you stop me and say its not fair to ban women because some of the men were sexist, i want to point out we are getting an article that shows only one side of the debate with a few hand picked quotes, without any context to what actually happened to prompt the ban or how many of the women previously signed up were involved in the incident. If this was a matter of honest to god the guys were harassing the girls then i see this as the wrong move, but if this was a case of the guys were telling immature jokes and girls cried sexism i fully understand it. There is too much context we dont have.
I see the appeal in gender exclusive activities, we DO behave differently around people of different genders, all of us and personally I am waiting for the day that they can open a Mens only gym in my city so that I wont get hit on by cougars.

The flaw is that you're missing the point. People aren't complaining about it being men only. There are events like that all the time and no one bats an eyelid. People are complaining about the faulty reasoning. Our men insult women, the best way to stop this is to get rid of the women. They're punishing the victims for the actions of misogynistic morons. That is unfair and daft, thus we complain.
