I'm going to vouch for Final Fantasy 12. It's got probably the most freedom in character creation I've seen, and I don't think you need to grind to beat it (if you do grind, the main storyline because piss-easy).
If you liked Disgaea, try Final Fantasy Tactics, or FFT A2: Grimoire of the Rift. There's a huge variety of classes in each game, and each class can take certain abilities from other classes, so there's a lot of potential for really weird/broken/unconventional builds out there.

PSN price is usually a rip-off for PSP games.

Persona 1 is $40. Saw it on Amazon for $20.
Dark Hero Days for PSP (without DLC) is... I think $20. Amazon sells it for $40. The cheapest I've seen it in used stores is $20. You can also download two characters for free for it. (Sapphire and Plenair)
Our worlds are backwards!

Was OJ Simpson guilty in your world?

Anyway, I'll check it out. did they fix Ninjas?

They were always dodging the healing spells I cast on them. They dodged HEALING spells.

Well, my favorite game of all time is Chrono Trigger. It's less class-based than other than other J-rpgs. The really neat thing about the game is how the party members work together...some will have attacks that only work if both characters are in the party. Later in the game, you'll unlock attacks that use all three party members. Despite having a small cast of characters, this encourages players to test out many different combinations.

Other than that...well, have you played Knights of the Old Republic II? It's a bit glitchy (LucasArts gave the developers a ridiculous deadline and refused to push it back), but it's got a great story to it (a few loose ends due to content getting cut, sadly...)

They pull an interesting twist with the class mechanics--you'll have a choice between three different jedi classes for your main character, and once you reach a certain level you'll be able to advance to a stronger class (even in a different direction...you can start off as a Jedi Guardian--a warrior, then become a Jedi Master/Sith Lord--a spellcaster). Also, there will be certain party members that, if you get them to like you (I suggest looking up a guide for it), they can learn a second class to replace their original. Add in different skills that are learned when you level (such as demonlitions, computer skills, ect. These have nothing to do with your class) and "feats" (skills that are more class based. Characters start off leaning towards melee or ranged, but you can level them in a different direction if you want...most of these are open to all classes, if I remember correctly) and you've got quite a few options on building your characters.

And of course, there's a morality meter, but that really works better in the Star Wars universe than other games. There's also a character that will be messing with you no matter which side you choose, so it gets pretty interesting at times.

The combat is a variant of turn-based. It's basically the ATB combat system (turn based with a timer), sped up to the point that turns can last about a second.

LOL. Yeah. I was right there with you. I was about to snap the disc in half at one point during the statue section. I did it eventually and was about 70 hours into the game when my son "accidentally" deleted my profile and all of my saves. I sold the game. Wasn't gonna do that shit again. Game was pretty fucking epic once I learned the battle system though. I was raping stuff with a ferocity only known by rapists near the end.......or something.....
Try Grandia. A fantastic battle system. Best I've ever seen. You can interrupt enemies and everything. And it doesn't have a difficulty curve like a brick wall.

Wait, have you tried Phantasy Star Online? Thats a pretty fun game. Although it has little in the ways of story and dialog... so you might not like it.
I'm sorry. I was busy playing Phantasy Star Portable 2.

I like to play that during downtime.

It's actually got wit and charm. The over-arching plot is cliche bull. But the writing is sharp as a tack. And online play. On the PSP.

Demon's Souls.

No, really. Just get that for now. Before the server shutdown means no helpful messages.

I'm pretty sure ninjas/etc being broken was fixed in #2 & #3. Disgaea 1 is only really for the hardcore fans of the series (Like me) to play.

I think this is one rare example of a game that's just cheaper bought on PSN. I'd also check out Prinny: Can I Really be the Hero. But that's a platformer.

as Chibz said, Disgaea, that has so much choice and complexity to delve into, the main story is just a long tutorial, the real game begins after that.

Might I also suggest Monster Hunter, it isnt for everyone, but there is a lot of customization kinds of things... I just started Phantasy Star portable 2, that seems like it has quite a bit of choice...

wow... those are all psp titles... sorry about that

I did play PSU for quite a while a couple years ago actually. Was an alright game. Story didn't really hook me though for some reason.

You could also recommend Monster Hunter 3 on Wii for the guy. That's a good 'un. But MH isn't really a JRPG. It's more of an action game.

Don't like Monster Hunter because of generally clunky combat, and generally long missions.

If I'm doing something for 45 minutes, I want a near 100% guarantee of success.

Playing PSP2 right now. It's my time-killer. Got it off the holiday sale for $17.

Well then I'd check out Monster Hunter 1 on PS2, or Monster Hunter Portable 1 (or 2) on PSP, or Monster Hunter 3 on wii. The problem is that the MH series never really had a strong storyline going on. Just a heads up.

What about Final Fantasy X? The story itself is pretty linear, but the Sphere Grid should be right up your alley in terms of choice, particularly when it comes to Kimahri.

Other than that, I'm at a loss. Sorry.
