So I started playing dwarf fortress again. Its famous for being complicated and that. But after you get over the newbie mistakes it becomes super easy to create a super bunker that nothing can penetrate and can produce infinite food and is perfect in every way. So this play through ive decided to add a new rule: My dwarfs are humans. They CANNOT dig unless it is a basement at 1 level down or a stone/metal mine structured as such at a max of 4 levels down. All buildings must be above ground and dwarves must live above ground in buildings with a roof. Its insanely hard now. All buildings take 10000 years to build and every dwarf is constantly unhappy from not having enough housing and building a nobles 2 story palace requires crazy complex planning and scaffholding. Im also having serious trouble fitting everything into a single layer. Suddenly the game is awesome and interesting and im struggling.

TLDR: What games have you played recently where you invented your own game changing rules to make the game waaaay more fun.

Not for a single game but one of the things I am forcing myself to do is not horde things. If I pick up a rocket launcher or laser cannon or whatever, I burn it on the first enemy I see, if I find a power-up item I use it right away. No more holding on to shit "just in case"

In Dishonored I did a no powers playthrough (Although there's 1 single spot you HAVE to use blink) and it's pretty awesome. No more blinking from lamp to lamp, no timefreezing and just waltzing through a room full of people. It's not extremely hard, but it adds a new twist on the game.

In Skyrim, after creating potion loop +Infinity equipment, I made a couple of self-imposed rules.

1) No using the most insane stuff. I put it in my closet. I ended up using my 3rd or 4th best equipment instead.

2) Use the wrong equipment for the right job. I put my sneaky mage into Heavy Armor and equipped her with a dagger, and insisted on sneaking up on and backstabbing to death all enemies. If I didn't successfully sneak up and 1-hit kill an enemy I would have to fight it with my dagger. No magic, even though I was built as a combat mage. The only exception were flying enemies and only until I got them to land so I could dagger them.

3) ONLY equip the increased weight limit +Infinity item when about to Fast Travel.

Eh, I mainly do the standard stuff.

Just did a Mass Effect 3 zero death run on insanity.
(No reloading, and if you die, delete your career)
That last battle was so bullshit, almost died so many times and squeaked through with many uses of defense matrix. Even ran out of medigel, 'cos sacrificing squadmates as distractions was a thing.

Was playing adept, though. Probably much easier with an infiltrator.

I think I'm almost done with mass effect. Maybe do a full zero death run all the way from mass effect 1.
Insanity in early ME1 is a bit ridiculous, though. Getting one-shot due to having shitty armour is horrible, especially since you have to rely on the RNG to get better gear.

Oh hell yeah. I finally started doing this after one too many games of having a packed inventory by the final boss just because I never wanted to waste my precious items.

I made a bunch of restrictions for how to play Skyrim, in order to make it more immersive. SkyRe actually corrected most of my issues though by its combat rebalance and "Needs" mod.

On every Deus Ex game I did at least one no-hacking playthrough. I love hacking, but I can become dependent on it to the point of missing out some nice challenges. I also tried other challenges like no-kills/takedowns, no guns, etc.

After I finish Absolution, I'll likely go through and attempt a purist run with no KOs and as few disguises as possible. Recently I've imposed a rule in KF where I will occasionally use off-perk, weird gun combos and try to work out strategies for success with them.
