So what's wrong with your PC now? It sounds fairly competent (except for the Vista part).
If you want a good old game I'd recommend Total Annihilation (RTS) or Rome:Total War (turn based strategy).

Unreal Tournament (GOTY and 2k4 should both work!)
Quake live www.quakelive.com It's free! And a good time waster.

Starcraft is a fantastic RTS that can be easily run.
Also, KotOR 1 and 2 can both be run pretty easily.

All of these are absolutely necessary. As to the Thief series, it is difficult to run dark project and metal age on any system made after 407 A.D. so good luck with that endeavor. Deadly Shadows only runs on desktops so if you're system is a laptop, you're sol. Otherwise, they are all great games. Rune, if you can find it, is fucking awesome as well. Oh, and if you're into any kind of flight sims or space sims, Descent: Freespace and its sequel are pretty much the best you can buy. Absolutely epic games.
Deadly Shadows does run on laptops, Maybe it just requires a little tweaking.

I recommend my first PC game, Stronghold. This is the game that got me into RTS games and I still love it to bits. It's old and will definitely run on your PC... I assume.

Morrowind?
Also Age of Empires 2.

I can install those games faster than some games take to load.

Stronghold Definitly, also Stronghold Crusader

Another RTS classic the original Red Alert, before EA got their claws in it....

Ok, maybe it's changed. But when it came out, it was incompatible with any existing laptop chipsets.

Older games can be great; how I miss the good old days when gameplay mattered and graphics existed solely to show you what was an enemy and what wasn't.

Deus Ex. THE gold standard of gaming. You are obligated to play this.

Diablo 2. Do I even need to explain?

Neverwinter Nights 1, plus both expansions.

Morrowind, plus both expansions. Forget the dumbed-down shiny-graphics Oblivion, Morrowind is what the Elder Scrolls series is all about--complexity and depth.

Freelancer. Great gameplay, great story, a beautiful galaxy to explore, and a huge and comprehensive (even still!) modding community. How can you go wrong?

Total Annihilation (Looking for an old-school RTS that makes Starcraft look like crap by comparison? TA is it--and it's even older than Starcraft is)

Giants: Citizen Kabuto (A very entertaining and under-appreciated third person shooter/action game with some great humor)

Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast--and/or Jedi Academy. (The Force Unleashed was a turd, well-polished with fancy physics and effects. Jedi Outcast is what a Star Wars game should be)

Hitman: Contracts. Not as good as Blood Money, but it'll run smooth on your system. Fun, replayable, but probably the lowest priority game on this list.

Out of those games, Deus Ex is the most important. Every gamer has to play it--period. There is no excuse for not having played Deus Ex. Morrowind and Jedi Outcast are also games that absolutely must be played.

The Thief trilogy is pretty old and absolutely brilliant. You should be able to run pretty much any Source game reasonably well on that hardware, so you could try out some HL2 or TF2.
Follow this advice!!

thief games are so much fun and a lil challenge aswell!

Depends on what kind of game you want to play, but I recommend:

Jagged Alliance 2, Rome: Total War, Baldur's Gate II, Wizardry 8, Deus Ex, X-Com: UFO Defense, Star Control, Eschalon Book I & II, Avernum 5, Masters of Orion II, Counterstrike ... that's enough to look at for now I guess.

Deus Ex.

What A Shame...
Whoa, it took 9 posts for someone to mention it.

Let's just say all the others just took it for granted he had already played the game and went with something original, okay?

OT: Oh shit, I was going to say Deus Ex. Well then, how about Second Sight? I just bought it on the Steam sale, and it's awesome.
