Warzone 2100 as previously mentioned. Especially if you have people you can play multi with, although the campaign is pretty awesome.

If you feel like trying something different with loads of different gameplay outcomes, you could try:

Earth 2150 (and it's standalone expansions "Lost Souls" and "The Moon Project")
Excellent storyline, huge tech tree, and completely custom-built units with highly detailed AI modes (not just aggressive and defensive, but also settings like "flee at x% health", "lights out" makes them less visible at night, platoons allow organised armies that really act as an army should...). Also the three playable factions are actually vastly different in terms of resource gathering, unit specialities and construction. Compared to them, Terrans, Protoss and Zerg seem like palette swaps.
Earth 2160 isn't bad either, but extremely dumbed down compared to 2150. Still a great storyline, though, and, like its predecessor, excellent voice acting (at least in German. It's an "old-European" production after all).

The War Of The Worlds (What I usually refer to when I say WoW, since it's much older than World Of Warcraft)
The best comparison might be the Total War series. You get a "world map" (actually an "England map"), where you move your units around, and at any time you can switch to local map view to build structures, and of course to fight battles.
BOth factions are completely different in terms of economy, research, military and of course design, and I never ever managed to complete every research item in one playthrough on either side. No (officially supported) multiplayer though. It's in the code, but hidden. Probably because a multiplayer game of that kindwould take ages.
Ah War of the Worlds :D
Still have the original discs upstairs. Loved that game despite all the clunky odd stuff it had.

Good retail RTS's;
Sins of a solar empire: Epic scale game in space with lots of lasers
Supreme Commander: Huge epic land battles with robots and Lasers

Free RTS's:
Command and conquer 1+2 and Red Alert: Classic RTS acion. EA games released them for free. But they can look pixelated on higher resolotion screens. The colours are sometimes screwed up as well.

I'm surprised no-one mentioned Zero Hour [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_%26_Conquer:_Generals] really adds a lot to the game).

If you're interested in something a bit different, I actually prefer sequel [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_for_Middle_Earth]. The restriction to specific sites for expansion actually adds an interesting element to the game. Both are fun, though.

And I'd like to believe we are long due for a sequel or reboot of the Dune II series. Indeed, the last one Emperor: Battle for Dune [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor:_Battle_for_Dune] had its moments. But I don't think EA is into it anymore.

Oh, and High Treason [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Act_of_War:_Direct_Action] are both worth a look.

Achron [http://www.achrongame.com/site/about-achron.php], the time travel sci-fi RTS. Why? Because your brain isn't melting enough.

Let me put it this way. A common tactic is to send scounts to look at a base, skip to the future to see what they will find, and cancel the order.

Rome Total War, Medieval 2 Total War - best ones of the series, and there's nothing else quite like them.

I love RTS games. I've been married to Starcraft II for a while now, but it's an open relationship and she's giving me the green light to seek other pleasures. Previous relationships include:

Age of Empires II (We still hook up sometimes.)
Age of Empires III (That was a dark patch.)
Empire Earth (A different experience every time. Sexy as hell.)
Empire Earth III (Then puberty hit her like a truck made of trains.)
Starcraft (Something about being fucked in the ass by a Korean just feels right.)
Warcraft II (My first love. Fuck, she was ugly in retrospect.)
Warcraft III (Her "models" got "3D" if you know what I mean.)
Rise of Nations (Forgettable.)
Company of Heroes (Well. That was...interesting.)

And a number of one-night stands. I'll remember them if you mention them.
Age of Mythology is a decent play, with her dip into Greek, Egyptian, and Norse lore. but the thing i would suggest. keep with Starcraft 2, the gals a always a good time, maybe revisit her older sisters Starcraft, and starcraft:Brood war. you know in preperation for their newest family member Starcraft2:Heart of the swarm.

I see that you prefer the 'gather resources, create an army, crush your enemies' style of RTS, so it might not be your cup of tea, but did you heard about the game called Knights of Honor? It's and old game from 2004, but due to the graphic style it's still looking good. Gameplay wise - it's a mix of Medieval: Total War and Europa Universalis, so the economy, politics, espionage, diplomacy etc. are just as important as warfare. What's the best about it, is that every game mechanic was given the proper attention, and there's absolutely no thing I can point out about this game that could be made better. It's just a complete package of medieval kingdom simulation, and let me tell you, taking control of the small, weak, one province kingdom/duchy/caliphate (even better, because there's a chance the Pope will regularly send Crusaders up your ass in this case) and changing it into an European powerhouse is VERY satisfying.

This is one of those games that no one remembers about, and it's a damn shame really.

Try this one on for size, it's served me well in the past. I would think it to be satisfactory for your cravings.

Dawn of war (1, dark crusade has the most badass campain imo, but soulstorm adds some more races to play with); sins of a solar empire (rebellion is coming out pretty soon, that'll be awesome =D check out the 'sacrifice of angels 2' mod) but if you want space combat I can recommend space empires V ; you have to design your own ships, there's terraforming, at high tech levels you can create stars, Dyson spheres and/or black holes, you can build massive carriers and base-ships (with hundreds of fighters...which you also have to design yourself) the array of possible strategies is mindboggling.
Have you ever tried Demigod? it's cool, dunno if it'll be your thing.

Rise of legends was nice; but then again I couldn't compare to rise of nations.
Supreme commander: Forged alliance is probably my favourite RTS of all time.
Avoid supreme commander II like the plague (or try and then reject it)
Try Universe at war: earth assault if you never have, it wasn't really my cup of tea but it is definitely a very cool game.
Surprised you never tried red alert (1 or 2, 3 was waaay too cartoony)
If you're going to try C&C: generals (zero hour), you absolutely must try the shockwave mod. It's incredibly good.
tiberium wars was good, tiberium twilight is kind of shit. Innovative, to be sure, but kind of shit.

Nobody has mentioned the Men of war series? Well let me correct that right away. If you want an unforgiving game that doesn't participate in much of hand holding. It's set in World War II. Every individual soldier has his own unique inventory so if you have a squad and one dude has anti tank grenades and he gets killed then your squad has no anti tank grenades until you send someone to scavenge them from his corpse or maybe an enemy corpse. Same goes for bandage and ammo.

Men of War Assault Squad if you want multiplayer but there are other games in the series.

Total War:

To give you a rundown of the series.
Shogun and Medieval where the first games and the AI could be scary sometimes. "Oh look France has taken half the bloody map while I still struggling with my first provinces..game is on". But the controls aren't as refined as in later installments.

Rome - Excellent fun but sometimes AI is lacking especially during sieges. There is a great variety in the diffrent factions. And Egypt is a pretty damn scary opponent. The expansion Alexander was quite intense but a bit buggy.

Medieval 2 - Another great game in the series. And has some moments that can possibly make you crap your pants. Also you can sail to the new world conquer the Mayans and Aztecs.

Empire - The weakest installment int the series IMHO. This takes mainly part in the 17 hundreds. And musqets and cannons are the base of your warfare. What I really didn't like about the grand campaing was that I could take over nation after nation and the AI didn't put up much of a fight (had a pretty high difficulty). The AI nations continued their petty conflicts that never amounted to anything until I steamrolled across the map.

Napoleon - A bit more refined than Empire. Here the campaings are split into smaller campaings. The problem here is that the campaings have a strict limit on turns for you to reach your objectives which felt a very artificial way to make the game more challenging. I lost intrest in it fairly quick.

Shogun II - The series return to glory. The AI has improved in many ways. Diplomacy actually works. If you enter into an alliance with someone you can actually depend on that they won't backstab you as soon as you leave the border poorly protected. Oh yeah you have ninjas that shoot EXPLODING ARROWS :D

Got a half hour? Watch this video ... then buy Sacrifice.
Although, the multiplayer scene is quite dead, being a 10 year old game and all.

Metal Fatigue was genius and I'd recommend it highly. A bit like Earth 2150 but eh better in my opinion, and the whole gluing arms off dead opponents to yer bots and then researching them or just kicking about with them was excellent.

If you want something a bit different to your standard RTS try RUSE or World in Conflict. I just like zoom functions, personally
