Splinter Cell Conviction is pretty good. The beta for GRAW Future soldier will be played through that game too. I'm excited about it.

MGS4, the Thief games, Hitman, and the new(ish) chronicles of Riddick game has another game pack in, the alien campaign on AvP is decent with stealth, and Batman Arkham Asylum has fun stealth, but also fun fighting moments as well.

Oblivion lets you use a stealthy character, the mechanics are pretty good. Not great, mind you but that game is a modder's dream.
really? I hated the stealth in oblivion
the assassin/thief guild quests are IMPOSSIBLE w/out invisibility
I managed them well enough without having to use invisibility. Common sense is a great solution to most problems.

Like people are saying, if you havent tried the hitman series you should :D

Conviction is a great game although a bit short. the stealth in it feels somewhat like you are a predator from the alien movies :D

however i found it more fun when i avoided using the mark and execute and using my guns only when needed. and when u get the hang of climbing around and shooting out the lights and killing the enemy with the various melee takedowns then its alot of fun :)

Also, I do want to say Conviction or MGS 4, but those aren't exactly good "stealth" games as they are good "action" games.
Conviction, maybe so, but Metal Gear Solid 4 is the best Stealth game ever if you play it right.
But you don't have to "play it right". The game doesn't encourage stealth and that doesn't sit right with me.
Crank up the difficulty and the only way you will survive is playing it stealthy. I went for non lethal playthroughs and getting all the emblems and what not. There's really no other way on the higher difficulties.
The fact that the tranquilizer doesn't run out of ammo really hurts the stealth. I beat it on the second highest difficulty, and I thought the awful controls and stiff movement really hurt the game. Plus, so much of the game is in wide open well lit environments, the only way to be stealthy is to rely on the camo thing. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is my personal favorite stealth game, and I've heard good things about Hitman: Blood Money.

I'm almost exclusively a console gamer, and if you want to go that route, I think the TENCHU games are about as good as u can get.

You know, you can't deny the fun of playing an older MGS game, I was recently playing the first one, after finding it in a pile of old stuff, not remembering much about it, and found it to be without a doubt, a true stealth game. Being used to games like HL2, where you can praticaly take on a tank with your crowbar, I went in guns blazing (or more acurratly, fists blazing, because you dont get a gun in the beginning) and was quickly destroyed, multiple times. But when I used stealth, I got thru the first stage with being caught once, though it took a few tries. In MGS 1, you NEED stealth.
P.S. this applies to the first part for sure, though I dont know about later in the game, I havent gotten very far beyond the first boss, because I have no memory card and my power cut.

I can understand having trouble with the Thieves Guild Stealth, but when is Invisibility required for the Dark Brotherhood?
In either situation if you think it out you can figure out what to do without going invisible
Except maybe in the last Thieves Guild, but it's possible without invisibility anyway

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena (PS3/360) is amazing, plus you get a graphically updated and uber cool version of Escape from Butchers Bay on the same disc!.

Its pretty cheap at £10 preowned :)

I'd be really careful when selecting a 'stealth' game. The vast majority are extremely poorly programmed. Sure, the graphics are good or whatever - but what's the point of a game where there is only ONE right answer, and until you magically guess it, you're going to fail/die and be stuck with horrendously long loading screens every single time.

I've yet to see one that had multiple REAL options (rather than just ways of committing sometimes humerous suicide) or gave enough hints to arrive that the magical RIGHT answer without spending hours on the wrong possibilities to really have much faith in this genre.

If anybody can point out a few good examples (and having played many of the games in this thread so far, I'm not convinced that'll happen), I'll be more than happy to reconsider it.
The Hitman games? Of course, I've only played 2, Contracts and Blood Money, but they all gave you an open-ended level, with several ways to complete the mission.

Hitman: Blood Money and Thief. Best stealthers ever. I remember how fun it was to play Hitman. There are like 10 ways to complete your objective in every mission. 10! In an urban mission, this guys having a party and you have to kill him. How? Lets see, you can:
1. Sneak in as the pizza delivery guy and kill him.
2. Kill the veterenarian across the street, take her tranq darts, go down the road, up a tree, into a treehouse, and use the airsoft gun to kill him, the one the neighborhood kid used to take pot shots at flower pots.
3.Sneak into his backyard, overload his barbeque with more lighter fluid to power a jet, and watch when the guy goes out to make some steak.

You get the idea.

Ninja'd. But I elaborated on the open-ended mission.

I heard Conviction didn't have enough stealth despite being a pretty good game, so if you want stealth, so stay away from that.

Splinter Cell: Double Agent was a pretty good stealth game, so go for that. I've also heard that Hitman: Blood Money was really good.

I sometimes install Oblivion only to play through the Dark Brotherhood missions... I just love them :p

Splinter Cell Conviction was a dissapointment to for two reasons.
1) it was very short. Completed the single player campaign the same day I bought the damn game.

2) Allthough I liked the stealthing bits I felt like they were forcing action upon me. You can buy upgrades for weapons that are anything but stealthy. You must battle several miniguns and a chopper. But worst of all you get trapped in a room with all three exits getting stormed by Splinter Cell agents who can see through concrete walls and pinpoint your location on the dark side of the moon.

Thief never got my full attention, I was too young to have any patience back in the Thief 1/2 days and the third just flew under my radar.

Hitman: Blood Money is awesome, think I'll play it after this post.

A new game to consider.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
It's somewhat old, runs on the source engine and is very glitchy. BUT it's a real treat if you want a game that offers multiple methods for solving the same problem. It's an RPG set in the World of Darkness by White Wolf. It's set in their old setting though so if you are familiar with New World of Darkness you can expect quite some things to be different.

You could roll a rogue in WoW LOL!!!11!

You could build a stealthy character in Fallout 3

Ooooh another awesome game.
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
It's an extremely linear game you don't have many options from an RPG perspective. But you do have options how to build your character. With a skill point system you can go into three main categories. The "warrior" kind of category, the "mage" and the "thief". The story is pure crap, but the combat makes up for it, imo. Backstab your opponents, cleave them in two or throw fireballs in their faces. All in true aim btw.

You could also play a spy in TF2 :D lol!

If all else fails, you could play sims and build a concentration camp. Always makes me feel better :p

I'd recommend Thief Deadly Shadows if graphics are your only problem with the first two. It's a really good game and has aged fairly well so far.
