My top two recommendations are usually Trigun and Berserk. Trigun is better for stylized action, Berserk for stylized violence. Trigun is much more light-hearted (most of the time) and Berserk is more intensely serious.

Black Lagoon's an easy way to get introduced to anime without an overly japanophile vibe. It's a lot like American action movies, so if you're kind of into that, it's a good watch, and it's not ongoing, so the story's pretty good too.

My first anime was Trigun and the Ghost in the Shell movie.
Anything Studio Ghibli is great, Full Metal Alchemist, and Cowboy Bebop are all great.
Also, if you're short on cash, check out anime for free (and legally!!!) at www.crunchyroll.com

Japanish as in language or culture wise?

Heroman is nice starting spot if you want to get younger kids into anime. The show itself suffers from being too predicable at times, and it can take a while to build any signicant amount of tension. Even so I still manage to find it quite charming and very well animated.
At this time, the anime remains subtitled in English.

Its also worth noting that it takes place in America. With the show making cameo appearances by the Manga creator, that surprise, is none other than Spider-man creator, Stan Lee!

Also try the English versions of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Naoki Urasawa's Monster, both of which are well dubbed in English.
...and even though the latter stars a Japanese protagonist, the show itself is quite diversive in culture.

Another highly acclaimed anime (at least in essence) is Avatar: The Last Airbender, once aired in Nickolodeon. Even though it's deep in culture styles resembleming old eastern civilizations, it is voice-synced complete with English enunciations in mind.
It's a crime not to watch it....

Here's a list of good-quality anime with some or no display of Japan culture, that are dubbed [spoken] in English, and in no particular order;

-Soul Eater
-Trigun
-Fullmetal Alchemist
-Big O
-Cowboy Bebob
-One Piece (The FUNimation english dubbed version)

Ooh, definitely agree with Samurai Champloo! And Seirei no Moribito, too -- the latter has a bit of a gentle pace at times but it's seriously quality (and a great female main character!) Also maybe Gankutsuou; it's sort of weird but not very "Japanese-y" in that it's a retelling of the Count of Monte Cristo. Baccano! has hilariously horrible things happen to hilariously villainous people as well as a fair amount of less-gory goofiness, all wrapped up in a clever story.

(Someone mentioned "Grave of the Fireflies" which is a very good movie but WILL have you bawling uncontrollably for about the last half of it. And it's one of the most Japanese-y movies I can think of, being both tragic and set in WWII-era Japan.)

My vote is on "Full Metal Alchemist" the original 2003 version, not brotherhood though it really depends on your preference... You should tell what you prefer. Are you into deep complex schemes? Horror? Philosophy? Psychology? Action? Fantasy? Humor? Drama? Cute under-aged girls? The list is endless. :T

Full Metal Alchemist is a story about two brothers, Ed and Al who loses their mother after their father abandoned them. After their mother's death, Edward became determined to bring her back through the use of alchemy, an advanced science in which objects can be created from raw materials. They researched Human Transmutation, a forbidden art in which one attempts to create or modify a human being. However, this attempt failed, ultimately resulting in the loss of Edward's left leg, and Alphonse's entire body. In a desperate effort to save his brother, Edward sacrificed his right arm to affix Alphonse's soul to a suit of armor. Some days later, an alchemist named Roy Mustang visited the Elric brothers, and told Edward to become a member of the State Military of the country to find a way to recover their bodies. Edward then became a State Alchemist, an alchemist employed by the State Military of Amestris, which infamously annihilated most of the Ishbalan race (Ishbal) in the past decade.

Now isn't that fun? Ed starts off crippling his little brother, taking everything away from him and then joins a military that just attempted to commit genocide in an attempt to restore his brother's life. :D

If you haven't guessed it, this anime has a lot of deep philosophy and morals packed into it, but what makes it even better is that it has a good touch of humor as well. ^-^

Edit: I didn't spoil anything, so don't worry. This stuff gets revealed in the intro.

So... yeah. Just something easy, funny if possible. Nothing to overly... japanish...
Fullmetal Alchemist is a good one to start with, either of the two series, they're both great. They're pretty long for anime series at 52 episodes each, but they're really good. neither of the two series are connected, the second was kind of a remake of the first one, but like I said, both are really good.

Also, I cannot recommend Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo enough. Both are made by the same guy and fantastic.

The other good thing about the three that I just listed is that if you don't want to watch in Japanese with English subs, the English dubs are well done, especially Fullmetal.

Edit: While Death Note is a great show and even better Manga(anyone saying otherwise is the kind of person who requires a fight scene for excitement), I wouldn't recommend it as a show to get you into anime. Put it third or fourth on your list, also, don't watch the English dub.

Baccano! ! It's a very good anime, and for your request of not overly Japanish, it's set in the Great Depression of America! With some outstanding dubbing.

Go out tomorrow night and hire every Studio Ghibli film you can find at your local video store.
Pretty much all of them are awesome, even the less awesome ones are still awesome.

Aside from that, if you want an easy to follow show then check out Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo. They're both made by the same guy, so they've got the same basic structure, and even some of the same actors.
They're also two of the only animes that are worth watching with English Dubs, since the voice acting is stellar.
That goes for all the Studio Ghibli films as well, every actor is just fantastic in those films, especially Howl Moving Castle. Billy Crystal ftw!

If you want something funny you could try Azumanga Daioh, it's the show that got me into anime something like six years ago. I didn't quite "get it" at first, but once I'd watched the first two episodes I was completely hooked. It's a bit more approachable than a lot of newer anime since it's from the time before moe became popular.

If you want something with a little more action, watch Ghost in the Shell, then watch Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Or the other way around, there's no continuity to worry about.

Honestly, Stand Alone Complex is the best TV sci-fi anime I've ever seen. NGE can suck it.

Hard.

[small]Dennou Coil and Serial Experiments Lain are better too.[/small]

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. All excellent gateway anime.
Yeah, a show that consists mostly of satire and references to other anime is a great gateway anime..

^^^This too. [small]But make sure nobody's around when you watch episode 5, part 3. ;_;[/small]
You should use torrents instead of watching low quality youtube videos.
http://Nyaatorrents.org is a great torrent search client for anime, and it's easy to navigate.
