I'm working on a project that I'm trying to tie in an atmosphere of melancholy. I've got a silent video that I'm overlapping with melancholic music. I wanted to use Heavy Rains "Painful Memories" theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGzwir0Yezk], but it's to short (1 minute and 29 seconds). An ideal time length would have been 2 minutes and 10 seconds to 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

I was hoping people here might know of a thing or two.

Requirments;
no vocals,
must be in the 2 minute range. (no editing)
Must have an air of melancholy.

Go through the Halo 3: ODST soundtrack.
Can you be more specific?

Blockhead is brilliant.

neat suggestion. Not quiiite melancholy when the energy builds up the way it does. Kind of an otherworldly disturbing sense to it. :) I like it. Sadly, it's to long for what I need it for. (But if I can find a use, I know where to find it now.)

I feel like I've heard that somewhere before. :) I seem to recall enjoying it a lot. Unfortunately it's not viable because it's 10 minutes long.

Damn you for stealing my post.. :p

Anyway.. my suggestions are:

Clint Mansell's 'Lux Aeterna' - its all over youtube in some form or another..

Craig Armstrong's 'Escape' - go for the beginning part of the full version.. again all over youtube..

Craig Armstrong's other stuff.. I'm not sure if you'd find it useful but look through his albums either on youtube or wherever..

EDIT: I know they're all a bit long but you might be able to cut them down to size, shouldn't be too difficult..

Also this is quite good although a little slow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTgK4bNjZxg

Final Fantasy IX is made of and for melancholy.

Try 'Passive Sorrow', it's longer than the 2 minute range, however, it's looped twice and very easy to just cut off somewhere and use a fade out. Works like a charm.

Others I recommend from FF IX are:

And a few from Crisis Core:

These are two examples of what you might be after. They are from the bands Draconian and My Dying Bride.

The trick here is finding songs that are around the 2 min mark. But at least those bands might give you a starting point to search from, if this sound is what you are after.

Why, that just sounds like a very stupid requirement.
because my video that the music will be attached to is in the 2 minute range. It's not stupid if it makes sense. :) If it was for personal enjoyment, then yes, it would be stupid. I can extend the videos run time, tops, to about 2 minutes and 30 seconds. That's a stretch I'd rather not do, but if I find the right music, I will.

Does 'No Vocals' apply only to English vocals? Because you're cutting out a great range of melancholy classical music with LATIN lyrics; requiems, Dies Iraes, etc.

Also I'm pretty sure you can cut Adagio for Strings (or indeed, its choral version, Agnus Dei) down to two minutes, and no-one'll really notice.

That top one worked well until it hit the guitar. :) But thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately they're all to long to use.

No vocals as in no vocals of any language. I don't want the voices of singers to interfere with the video.

I guess it's probably not the sort of melancholy you're looking for, but worth a shot:

Rather slow, quiet, eerie.
