Am I doing it right? :3
No, but you're still fantastic for the Suzimiya stuff. :)

I guess it's probably not the sort of melancholy you're looking for, but worth a shot:

Rather slow, quiet, eerie.
It wasn't quite what I had in mind, but I'm going to put that in the mix of maybes just in case it turns out it does something I like. :)

Check out some Godspeed You! Black Emperor is exactly what you're looking for.
I sense a collaboration of minds. Unfortunately the example given was about 7:30 minutes to 8 minutes to long.

Godspeed definitely delivers if melancholic non-vocal is what you want. Also Mogwai (for ex. christmas song).
Lots of great stuff in the film soundtrack world if non-vocal is what you want: Clint Mansell, John Murphy (soundtracks to Sunshine, 28 days later), Carter Burwell (maureen in the desert comes to mind). Jon Hopkins has some great stuff (check out Monsters soundtrack).
Man, this list could go on and on.

I'd think you can edit out a 2-min clip pretty easily?
It's in the nature of melancholic music to be drawn out and slow-paced. 2 minutes is very limiting.

Porcupine Tree has a number of songs with about a 2 minute instrumental section. Most of their songs have lyrics but most will be 5 to 10+ minutes long with huge chunks of just instruments ranging from angry to lustful to sad, not sure on the exact feeling, melancholy has a few shades in my mind, so maybe just pan through some things see what you get. I think you'd have best luck with something from these cd's: Lightbulb Sun, Signify/Insignificance, Deadwing, the Incident, or In Absentia, mostly anything older than lightbulb sun has more of a fun/acid rock vibe to it.

specific suggestions:
the very first 2:20 of PT's song "Russia on Ice" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aac0MoIlWY] on Lightbulb sun.
the first two minutes, also from 6:10 is to about 9:50 (particularly the last half) of "Arriving Somewhere but not Here." [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9vaAVm0LIk] the last two minutes or so might work too.
4:19 to about 6:20 of "Start of Something Beautiful" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tk0mvXFbAAg]
starting at about 4:26ish (especially at about 5) through to 7 minutes there is a somewhat melancholy, somewhat hopeful piece in "Dark Matter" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqQ8pgxJ4BE]
It may be a bit weird, somber but spacey? but the whole song is instrumental <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkBCa4-9h3Q>"Moon loop" from Coma Divine

Also Cinematic Orchestra and Dream Theatre have mostly instrumental somber pieces.

Incredible suggestions! That fits the criteria rather perfectly! Thank you for the suggestion. (Don't stop with the suggestions, everyone else. :) )

Go through the Halo 3: ODST soundtrack.
Can you be more specific?
The first minute and a half is beautiful.

I'll be honest; I am leery of using Halo 3 music. Halo is iconic in a strange way, making things associated with it to closely Halo related. Heavy Rain was more of a specialty ost, and so less known. But I'm concerned that if I play something from the very popular Halo franchise, people will identify it as a Halo song, and their own mental associations will come flooding in.

Also it's to long. :) But thanks.

The Halo theme isn't used at all in this, no monk chants, no chellos, no drums either. The saxophone is the dominant instrument here and at no point is there a discernible reference to any famous piece of Halo music.

Also, that video is a compilation of tracks from the album, so, as I said above, you could pick any section you want.

May have already been posted, but "Moonlight Sonata" by Mozart

It's a tad long, but as melancholy music goes it doesn't get much better than this.

Here you go
Although two of those are a bit longer than your two minutes, check them out...
The top one is a good pick. It stretches the 2 minute mark pretty well, but I'll add it to the pile. The Final Fantasy 6 one is FAR to iconic to use. :) Without uttering a single word, it breaches the "No Vocals" rule. The no vocals rule is because I don't want anyone focusing on the music or what it has to (actually) say. If the music is to iconic, it speaks to them in a different way. Your mind is in the right place, but it's to well known to utilize. Not to mention a shy bit to long too. :)

I'm aware these all exceed the timeframe you had in mind, but if any of them works, some easy editing in Audacity or similar could solve that problem.

[EDIT:] Didn't see the requirement of no editing until now. Oops.
Oh well, I'll just leave the videos up. Still great music.

This Mortal Coil - The Lacemaker

Brian Eno - Under Stars II

Try sampling a bit of RJD2's Ghostwriter (or if you can find a long enough instrumental bit some of Elliott Smith's tune that is sampled in it - 'I Didn't Understand'). Best of luck.
