I'm working on a project that I'm trying to tie in an atmosphere of melancholy. I've got a silent video that I'm overlapping with melancholic music. I wanted to use Heavy Rains "Painful Memories" theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGzwir0Yezk], but it's to short (1 minute and 29 seconds). An ideal time length would have been 2 minutes and 10 seconds to 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

I was hoping people here might know of a thing or two.

Requirments;
no vocals,
must be in the 2 minute range. (no editing)
Must have an air of melancholy.
[/li]
Maybe the OST from Let The Right one In, specifically the song Oscar in Love.

It's 2:22 though...

I know it is a fair bit too long but requiem for a dream is pretty melancholy.

Under your parameters (2:10-2:30, no vocals), this is the best I could come up with from my library.

I was trying to find an instrumental version of this song, but had no luck

Then how about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOMBzI66LJU ?
Incredible suggestions! That fits the criteria rather perfectly! Thank you for the suggestion. (Don't stop with the suggestions, everyone else. :) )
Glad to be of assistance, and good luck with the project. I am curious as to what the contents of the video is.

try adagio for strings by samuel barber
I would agree with you there, but that's been over-killed so hard in pseudo-emotionally deep videos. Ruined something great, to me at least.

I'd go for Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkle, it's 5 minutes but most of the time when a song is used in other media, they don't play from the beginning, and there's plenty of places to cut out. Also in that vein, Mad World by Gary Jules

The XX - Intro

Clocks in at 2:08, so it's in your ballpark. Nearly.

Edit: Bugger, already been suggested. My unique insight is neither unique nor particularly insightful. Still a good track though.

Smashing Pumpkins had a number of songs that had well over 2 minutes of instrumentals on their album Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness.

This may be a bit on the short side:

I can't find the song on Youtube, so look up Tina Dico's 'Boot Meets Scull/Silence in the Car'

It comes in at a 2:26 running time.

Another one I can't find on Youtube: Snog's 'Chasin' and the Jargonauts'

Running time: 2:47

No link: 'Departure' by Mar.

Running time: 2:30

No link: 'Wasted Time' by Kaare Norge

Running time: 2:25

That was more than I thought I had; I that was only going through half my songs.

Try Adagio in G minor by Albinoni

Also, try the similar titled Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber, which one place listed as the most depressing piece of classical music ever written

It is a bit long, though. Hope you find something!
