I second the Project Zero games comment. It's the best for atmospheric/immersivness of it all, you also pretty much feel vulnerable and the gameplay makes sure that you can't just blast the hell out of the ghoulies.

You, sir need the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl treatment!
Wait a minute, a bullet just hit me in the face. OH THANK GOD.

OP: Thief: Deadly Shadows. It's not that scary for the most part. Then you get to Shalebridge. Don't look up any more than that, you'll ruin the fun.

Silent Hill 2 is the only game that made me think "Oh my God I'm going to wet myself." I never did, but it were scary.

Sadly, I haven't been really scared by a video game since Doom 3 just when it came out, so I doubt the athmosphere holds up favourably by today's standards. Actually Portal scared me a bit, but I do tend to get paranoid when an omni-present, dictatorial voice guides me.
I'm sorry, but I just had to quote this, because your avatar kicks fucking ass.

OT: The first three Silent Hill games are pretty pants-wetting.

Project Zero (Fatal Frame in America) 2 and 3, maybe 1 as well just so you understand 3 a bit more.
Forbidden Siren is damn good if you can get past the near-vertical difficulty curve, sightjacking an enemy who can see you is pretty alarming to say the least.
Clock Tower series, also amazing...

Penumbra: Overture.
Very creepy game.

It's been said but I'll echo it, the Fatal Frame series are very scary, and, again, it's been said but - if you dont mind previous gen stuff, silent hill 2 you cant go wrong with. I got a few scares outta silent hill 4: the room too.

Dead Space is more jumpy out cheap scares, but good cheap scares if that makes sense.

Some people will say STALKER, and really, only "some" of it is actually scary but, hell of a game regardless.

Check out the Condemned titles, too. The first FEAR is good for some spooky moments. Silent Hill 2 is always a great standby if you don't want to sleep at night, either.
thanks for the link! that scared the piss out of me. I do scare easily.. but still.. the whole peeking around the corner/through the crack in the door shit had me..

Really? SH 3 aswell? I never made it through that because the intro sequence was so freaking long it was terrible. And the monsters are too plentyfull.

OT: The Penumbra series really :)

I think SH3 was kinda going for more of a chaotic terror rather than a silent fear. It's still the weakest of the three, but check out some videos on youtube and you'll see it has a couple of seriously creepy moments like, "the mirror room".

Play Penumbra: Black Plague if you can't wait. It's made by the same people, and has the same gameplay (run and hide from the HOLY HELL WHAT IS THAT!!!?!?!)

If you have a PS2, play Fatal Frame 1, 2, and 3. All in one week. You will be changed.

A. You could kill yourself in the intro sequence right away if you wanted to (but it would make a later plot point not make sense).

B. The intro was about five to ten minutes long.

C. The plentiful monsters makes it more freaky and terrifying to escape from.

D. SH3 had the most traumatizing scene EVER in ANY MEDIUM. PERIOD.

E. Penumbra instant win.

Ah, I'm talking about the trip to the town. You know the long segment with backtracking and what not, until you actually get where you're supposed to go. I just thought it took too long and was disappointed that you weren't in 'Silent Hill' until 5-6 hours into the game. That's what I meant :)

Oh. That didn't bother me, it was like I was in Silent Hill anyway.

I'm not sure why people are recommending Resident Evil in any form, since even the "good" ones have seriously comedic voice acting and it instantly takes me out of the game's atmosphere. Admittedly, RE4 does have some good tense moments as you wander through the village and such, but it's hardly what I would call Horror. Try The Thing, on PS2 or Xbox. It's especially creepy if you've seen the movie it's based on.

You'll like the surreal and mind-bending aspects of Eternal Darkness. Well worth tracking it down.
