I played Half-Life 2 before I played the first, this mostly due to the fact that I bought the Orange box solely for Portal, but decided to give all the games a try.

Mass Effect 2. I got the first one later so I could get rid of the stupid choices.
I played Mass Effect 2 before the prequel as well, then once I had completed it I enthusiastically downloaded Mass Effect 1 and discovered what an unpolished drool it was. I never did complete it.

I guess these are also worth mentioning:
Fallout 3
Team Fortress 2
Modern Warfare 2
Red Alert 2
Far Cry 2
Age of Empires 2
Quake III Arena ( to be fair, I did try the first game, but it was too scary for my young naive mind :p )

I played Gears of war 2 before 1, and I was like ''WTFlux, no punching in the head? or hammerburst? or Tai?...Oh no, so this is what it's gonna be like'' But all in all, still a decent game :)

Hm? well, I played Devil May Cry 3 before playing the first one (I didn't really enjoy the first one, but I can see why it was popular enough to warrant a sequel, which I never played), and I played Final Fantasy XII before any of the other games. Okay, and Kingdom Hearts II before Chain of Memories.

If a game has a good story (or is known for its story) I will never play the sequel before the original, because that would just be plain stupid.

I have never been disappointed doing things this way. The only games I play sequel after the original are when it doesn't really matter if I play the games in any order or not, ie - final fantasy.

Series and what games I stared with and what I thought of it:
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (It's ok)
Street Fighter 4 (played it once, didn't like it)
Half-Life (didn't like it at first, but like it now)
Call of Duty: Big Red One (I remember liking it, but my standards were really low back then)
Pokemon: Sapphire Version (loved it)
Metal Gear Solid (Wasn't good at it, forgot about it until I rediscovered the series)
Left 4 Dead 2 (loved it)
Grand Theft Auto 3 (just turned on the cheats and unleashed hell, in fact, when I finally got the game myself, I copied the save file of the person who owns the copy I was playing on so I would already have all of the map, hell I, to this day, don't know what the story is about)

Played Final Fantasy VII before any other (though I did get round to eventually playing every single one of them... except the most recent XII and XIII).
Played Yakuza 3, and still not played the first 2.
It took about 10 years before I played the original Street Fighter game after getting Street Fighter II when it first came out.

I played KOTOR 2 before KOTOR. The experience was....interesting. Playing through KOTOR 2 again with the backstory provided by the first is much better.
Ditto. I actually enjoyed KOTOR 2 so much I went and got the first.

Chrono Cross before Trigger...

Legend of Mana before Secret of Mana...

Half Life 2, Call of Duty 2, the list goes on and on, really.

I've played many games before their predecessors, but as far as I can recall, it's all been games which have their own self-contained story. Final Fantasy 7, Call of Duty 4, etc.

Oh, I did play the second Golden Sun game first. Is that linked to the first in any important manner?

GTA: San Andreas. Though that might not be counted cause it's completely unrelated. Hm.
Also: Fallout 3, CoD4, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Need For Speed Most Wanted, Sims 3. Oh and Pokemon. I've nearly played every game other than the original Red, Yellow and Blue.

EDIT:
And I realised the games I just mentioned cover almost every single main gaming genre that's out there. Hm. Makes me proud of that badge I have.

Heroes of Might & Magic II before I
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat before Clear Sky or Shadow of Chernobyl
Oblivion before the others.
Wing Commander III before the rest.
CoD: Modern Warfare 2 before 1.
Ultima 9 before the rest.
Final Fantasy 7 before the rest.

[edit:]
I actually played the Snes version of Zelda last, well apart from the new one.
This is more as i refused to play the rom i had back then and wanted to play the real deal.
And to be honest, i never managed to complete Zelda 2, i tried, i cried, but i couldn't.

Played Myst, Monkey Island, 7th Guest/11th Hour, Baldur's Gate, Diablo, Gabriel Knight, Broken Sword, Mass Effect, Fallout, Icewind Dale, Mechwarrior, Sonic, Mario, Warcraft, Starcraft, Discworld, Civ, Age of Empires, Lemmings, Worms and many more in chronological order.

A few times, like with silent hill: 3,4,1,0,2 then 5 :p
It happens often to many, and its nice to see people play older games because they liked the new. But sometimes, the older one is just so different, you can't believe its the same game ;)

I played Fatal Frame in reverse 3 then 2 then 1, so it's the only sequel I've played where the plot was somewhat relevant to the previous games.

I played Silent Hill 3 before any other, but I haven't played the first, and 2 has almost nothing to do with 3 except for the UFO ending.

There are a lot of games like Final Fantasy, but those games don't rely on the games before it to set the story.

I try to avoid it. I even waited until I could finish GoW2 before I bought GoW3.
