MGS4 was the first Metal Gear game I played. Thank god they released that encyclopaedia on the PSN. I read that whole thing so I could understand what was going on with these different characters and locations.

I played the Timesplitters games in reverse order. It's pretty clear that the games are similar but still have their own merits which makes them all worthy of being played for a million hours.

*Played Diablo II before I played the original.

Although, I didnt finish the original Diablo... played it, but I kept wanting to play Diablo II the whole time... was distracting.

*Never played Call of Duty until CoD4.

*Link to the Past was my first Zelda game. Though caught most of the Nintendo franchises on their NES runs in my youth, Zelda was not among them

*Hitman: Blood Money is the ONLY Hitman game I have played.

Playing Metroid Prime: Corruption right now, never even played a Metroid game beforehand. In other words, no, I do NOT remember him.

TF2 is the only one I can think of, but there are a couple sequels that made me unable to play the previous games:

The storyline and vast UI upgrade from BG2 and Throne of Bhaal left me unable to play through BG1 again, despite my attempts.

All the UI upgrades from KotOR 2 make KotOR 1 a pain to play, despite KotOR 2's story being totally fucking stupid.

Edit: Scrolling up, yeah I played Diablo 2 before the original.

Ive never beaten fallout 1 or 2 but ive sunk hundrends of hours in fallout 3.

I got my little fingers around Halo 2 before Halo: Combat Evolved.

Final Fantasy VII before any other.
Street Fighter II, never played 1.
Zelda: Link to the Past, never played 1.
Wing Commander 4, never played the others.
Chess Master 8000, never played the other 7999.
Tomb Raider 2, touched 1 very briefly after that.

I played and loved Fallout 3 when it first came out.

I tried the first and second, but couldn't stand them. It felt really...REALLY dull.

Rome Total War, although it has nothing to do with previous entries.
EDIT: Now that I remember, DOOM 3, WarCraft 3, Diablo 2, GTA Vice City, Hitman 2, Thief 3 (then I played the original ones).

Played Assassins Creed 2 before the first, some of the backstory that isn't explained at all in the sequel was confusing.

Played Fallout 3 without playing either other game, but it isn't really a true sequel so it wasn't a big problem.

Played Just Cause 2 without playing the first, but who plays that game for the story? really
