I on the other hand decided to hide all my real information from other people. I have nicknames for my nicknames & I often forget my real name. I don't even know where I live anymore, after typing so many different addresses over the year. Santa & the Easter bunny don't know that I exist so I don't receive Christmas presents from Santa anymore.

I could post on my real name and I doubt any of you could ever figure out where I live. But that's because I have an extremely common first and last name.

Seriously, last quarter in an HONORS class (30 students) someone else in the class had my same first and last name.

Nice to meet you too Mr. Valdez. Hows the Weather at your end it is rainy in Connecticut.
Well over here in good ol' California its sunny sunny sunny. Perfect beach weather. BTW I couldnt help but notice you played L.A. Noire, Portal 2 AND have a My little pony avatar. Good man.
I Don't hid it I like watching My Little Pony Friendship is Magic.
Me too. That show is awesome. I damn near fainted when they pulled a Benny Hill reference
I just finished watching the 14th episode when does that happen
Ticket Master and Bird in the Hoof. They even use a modified Benny Hill theme in the background music.
Bags159 nailed it right on the head, it was used during chase scenes. I loved watching Benny Hill after school
I always loved the Benny Hilly chase scenes in Scooby Doo. I was like "my childhood; it has returned!" when that tune started playing in Ticket Master

Well, you're really not. "Evan Mott" means no more to me then "XxNoobPwner69xX", ignoring the fact that, for all I know, your name is Samuel L. Jackson Sr. Oh yeah, and unless you are actually a cartoon pony, you're still hiding. Of course, that implies that if your picture was...well, YOUR picture, then you'd be more responsible for what you post here. Which you wouldn't. Because your face means no more to me then your name.

Short version: You have accomplished nothing except for wasting a bit of my time.

I'm the same behind a pseudonym as I am behind a regularnym. My default setting remains squarely on asshat either way.

Because one day I decided to stop hiding and take 100% responsibility for what I'm saying.
I prefer to use a handle as I am not into high octane masochism. I basically figure the real identity of someone on The Internet isn't all that hard to figure out if you want to, yet I don't exactly want to make myself easier to identify for anyone who has a rage-gasm over something I say, or say for a company to decide it wants to hold a grudge. Not to mention the general preferance that my real name doesn't wind up in any more bulk mailers or advertising queues than absolutly nessicary.

I mean if it makes you happy, more power to you, but honestly I think one of the reasons why anonimity is an advantage is because why it DOES let people get away with immature stuff, being known doesn't protect one from immature stuff. Basically in a perfect world where someone could make valid points and criticisms without worrying about people jumping down their neck or maybe some company screaming "this guy is costing us money" and going on the warpath, it wouldn't be such a nessicary shield on free speech, as things are now we do not live in that world. To put it bluntly even if your 100% correct about something, if an important person or company chooses to get uppity about it they can do a lot of things to you. This is especially true if your say being critical of them because you rely on them for a service and you are unhappy with the way they are providing it, but have no real alternatives. Or heck, the simple fact that you can be brought to court for slander or libel, and even if you win your looking at a massive amount of harassment due to having to go to court and take the time to make your case. Being potentially reimbursed financially for the time spent and legal fees if you win in no way compensates for the sheer annoyance of having to do it all, and that's something a lot of big companies and such rely on... it doesn't matter if your right or not, they can harass you into silence.

I admit I'm getting into issues that go well beyond the scope of The Escapist, I'm just saying that your doing more than "taking responsibility for what you say". More power to you, but while it won't happen today or tomorrow, I can virtually guarantee you will regret it if you ever decide to get involved in something more major than general posting.
thanks for the reassurance

Yes, because everyone on the net is going to know who you are seeing as there is only one Evan Mott to ever have existed... ever.

Rather a silly thing to brag about really.

Most peoples anonymity here has nothing to do with wishing not to be thought of as foolish in real life, but rather that they don't want everybody to know their name. Just because of companies selling the info on etc. For some, it's not even that. I usually either put my first or full name in the information of the sites I join.

Really. This entire thread is just a wank in the ether. There's no discussion value and you're just bragging about some inane little factoid as if it makes you special or something.
Sir Have you realized that you just complained about being smug by acting smug?
Fight fire with smug fire?

But he has a point...in that there is no point to this thread. Its just your run-of-the-mill wankery.
Yes there is a point it is Off Topic

Even Mott? That doesn't tell me anything. I live on the other side of the freaking world. You might as well make something up.

Great avatar, btw. And I know what you mean. My profile has all of my info. It does add a little accountability.

Seems like your being a bit braggy here, like were all wrong to have usernames and your cool because you use your real name. Though in me posting my opinion on your thread I guess you've won.

Great conversation here. Thanks ; )

I have all my accounts, STEAM, PSN, XBLA, all with the same name. Does that count?? Probably not, eh?
That's what I do. I would think that it counts, since you're still held responsible for what you say. Plus, I don't have to reveal your real name, something I'm hesitant to do on the internet.

I am the opposite side of the spectrum, having the most balentently "I am not telling you my name" outside of Anonymous :p

Well, I googled your name and came up with a facebook profile where a guy covered in christmas lights seems to be interested in breast cancer awareness, a baseball player from Riverside California, and what appears to be an angry juggalo on Myspace.

...I don't think using your real name on here is going to be terribly different from any other screen name.

Then post a picture of yourself and your home adress every time you say something. Also offer to pay our plane tickets in case we want to come beat the shit out of you.

Because your name isn't even close to 100% responsibility.
