You were not wrong at all by anything you did.
You should explain it all to a teacher or whatever to set things straight with the staff and see if they'll have a word with the mentally challenged guy.
He's not acting in any way fitting or proper, even if he does have difficulties it gives him no reason to act like a dick.
You accidentally hit him and stopped him from hitting you with a board, good, then enforced your dominance by puching him away, all good.
He might get the idea now, but make sure what really happened gets round the people who are on your side, those that are neutral, and those with authority above the pupils.
The ones that are dicks will always be dicks and this is just more ammo for them to be so, but no one cares about them, so just get on with things and if they try anything defend yourself so you don't get maimed, as you should... you know, what you'd do anyway.
But the problem with the mentally challenged guy, just try and get a teacher to understand so things can be sorted by the authorities that be.

Even slow people can read emotions, unless they're autistic, give someone a sincere (threatening) look, and it can work wonders.

I forgot to say this but, he will probably forget in a day or two...maybe not your class though...
I know this because in my college form class there was a retard who was an antagonist type and by bad chance he was sitting next to me in assembly he hit on the leg really hard I didn?t retaliate because I believe in third times the charm he then hit me twice more so I retaliated hitting him at the pressure point on the side of the knee with sufficient force to make him stop for most of the assembly. of course later he tried to keep hitting me so I him back each time :p then it was home time and the next day he had forgotten all about it my classmates didn?t really care....at all lol

The mentally challenged don't tend to pay attention to words that well, I know from personal experience. Your minimal level of violence in return is just the sharp sort of feedback that needs to be received for violent actions; he's not so dim he won't associate cause and effect unless he's trained not to be by the excessively tolerant. Feedback is needed, gentlemen, and anyone who takes self-defense as wrong because it involves someone handicapped is not someone I care to clean my shoes. Unfortunately, these people will be the ones telling the story, and "Haliwali hit the kid because he's retarded" is a tale that will grow in the telling. Some of the people who hear it are going to believe it even if otherwise rational.

This demands pro-active counterpropaganda. Not obviously, but people have to know that this was in self defense, because the lie is one that will spread and destroy you. The kind that are protectionist toward the kid are the ones that in a Puritan sense have no scruples about destroying you. Watch the hell out.

If things did honestly go down in the fashion stated above, i say no you are not wrong. The kid was obviously pushing your buttons and generally trying to be as much of an asshole as he could be. Now only two questions, one which is it work or school, cos you cant have co-workers and classmates in the same story. Second Why does everyone else encouraging this person have it out for you?
I've seen stuff like this happen, they are mocking the mentally challenged kid more, it's kinda like "ha ha, why is he actually doing this" more than "Yay that guy is getting hit by that mentally challenged kid"

From all the information you stated no I don't think you were wrong. Mentally challenged or not he is feeding off of the attention he gets from his negative behavior. I'm glad you have some training in defending yourself and have co-workers that "got your back" but if anything further should come of this incident I stronglly suggest you notify the police. If you do take matters into your own hands you will only be feeding into this negative behavior and it will spiral down quickly. You will lose your job and quite possibly go to jail. I know it's difficult especially when the jokers that are angry at you would do the same exact thing if they were in the situation you were in.

He was attacking YOU. It doesn't matter if he didn't know any better, you still have the right to defend yourself... And besides, from my experience defending yourself when a mentally challenged person attacks you is the only way that they even have a shot at learning that attacking random people is BAD.

I can't help but feel I'm missing some of the story...
I'm not blaming you, but when something goes wrong we naturally try to make ourselves sound as innocent as possible.

It doesn't sound like you're a respected person at school, neither am I and I know how it feels >__>
But just because he's mentally challenged doesn't mean he should get away with half the stuff he does; you should be okay if asked about it.
In the future, report him.

If he's mentally challenged to the point of physical violence, he shouldn't even be in your class.
True that, you should almost make a complaint against him to a teacher or something.

Noone here is against you, unless you agravated him, which you didn't, and honestly, i've had people like that in my class, and he actually gave my friend a concussion one time, and SHE(my friend)was the one to get in shit! she didn't even do anything! He also fractured my collarbone with a rock because he was dared to go throw a rock(he just CHOSE the big one) down my "plumber's crack". obviously, he missed however, after this, he was deemed was too violent, and got expelled. anyway, back to you, defense is defence, no matter who it's against, and if he is going to try to hurt you for shits and giggles, (i don't wanna sound like an asshole here, but) he deserves to get what's coming to him once in a while.

From what you have presented to us, you don't seem to have done anything wrong. Your classmates are the ones who are wrong by encouraging this guy's negative behavior and only accepting him when he hurts others. Shame on them.

A student I have classes with is mentally challenged. He isn't exactly friendly to me, throwing small things and swearing at me, and is encouraged by the classmates.

There's going to be a linch mob when I get to work,
I'll post more when I get back from work tonight.
Why do your classmates encourage it? Also, if it takes place at school why will you get beat up at work?
