You weren't wrong, I probably would have reacted the same way. There are mentally challenged people who behave perfectly well and if he wasn't encouraged it may not be happening. Though, if he cannot behave in a civilised manner then he shouldn't be placed in classes/school where the teacher(s) can't/won't stamp his behaviour and peers are trying to work.

Being handicapped, be it physically or mentally, doesn't give you free reign to act however you want without consequence, unless your disability specifically inhibits your common sense. As it stands, what you did was in the right. Don't worry about how everyone thinks you some kind of monster. We've got your back.

If someone is menacing you with a board, I think it's reasonable to want to defend yourself. You're in the right.

You always have to be careful when dealing with the mentally challenged, since you can't really defend yourself from them.

I have a question for you though, if this student is mentally handicapped, then why isn't he in a special needs class?
yes why, but in my school the mentally challenged are in the same classes. im puzzled how the hell they pass

If what you described was accurate to detail, he deserved -more- than a shove. And if the other people were on -his- side, they're probably out to get you or something, cause WAT

If things did honestly go down in the fashion stated above, i say no you are not wrong. The kid was obviously pushing your buttons and generally trying to be as much of an asshole as he could be. Now only two questions, one which is it work or school, cos you cant have co-workers and classmates in the same story. Second Why does everyone else encouraging this person have it out for you?
The guys in class were saying they would show up at the place I work to beat me up, I trusted my coworkers would help me if the need arose. And to your other question, I'm not really that well liked in my school. They encourage him because they're stupid, manipulative douches.

And now story time.

I went to work, nobody was waiting for. Pushed the issue to the back of my mind and worked for a few hours before the weirdest thing happened. An old woman came to me to get something off the top shelf in our store. She walked with me to the aisle and got the items. I handed to them and turned to leave when she said to me, "Don't leave the store, you're life is in danger." This didn't register with me until I had walked away. When it dawned on me what she had said, I stopped in my tracks and remembered all the other stuff. It was like she was a prophet sent to me with a message. Apparently, my faced showed my thoughts, and a coworker asked what was wrong, and I explained (that was the first time I said anything.) I walked out the door to get some carts and see one on the far side of the lot, so I go to get it. As I approach it, I see a mini-van with one occupant and start hearing rap music. The kind one of the guys who wants to beat me up enjoys. I take a closer look at the driver, and see that matches the build of the guy in question, although I couldn't get a face. Balls man. I return to the store and maybe a quarter of an hour later another car pulls up. Everyone stands in the parking lot and I'm pretty sure they all matched the not to happy with me crowd. Bricks were nearly crapped. The cars don't leave for another half hour, and by the end of my shift my manager made sure I got my car with his gun in hand and I borrowed a bat from one of my friends. Thankfully, nothing happened on my way home, and I'm hoping they'll have simmered down by tomorrow.
On a positive note though I got to see a real life version of this-

I delt with a similar kid in grade school fucker threw a compass at me (the ones with the sharp point on the end for math class) it embeded itself in the table a few feet to the left and he cracked one of my friends over the head with a 3-hole puncher so we all got togeather and kicked the crap out of him at lunch time.

They are trying some new merger program at schools for those not too severely disabled, which is turning out pretty horribly for everyone.
Actually my brother has had pretty good result while out of the Developmentally Challenged classes, although he is overall a nicer kid than this guy. He isn't the best of students, but I think it's working for him I think that may be a result of how harsh I was with him when we were little. I saw him getting away with crap and couldn't stand it so I made sure he knew what he was doing was wrong even if our parents didn't. Looking back, I know I was too harsh with him, but I think the effects of no discipline would have been worse. I've been thinking about right on the subject for a while now, and may finally get around to putting my views into words on this subject.

Nope and the laws protect you on it. Grab yourself some nice pepper spray... and have a chat. They urge him on, they are just as responcible. And Just cause he is mentally handicapped he is not above the rules. If it needs to be, get a officer. Get parents, or if they do step up and attack a nice shot of pepper spray to the face brings odds in your favor in a non-leathal manner.

Also feel free to speak with your supervisor to expel those out of the class who cause the chaos. They don't wanna learn, they can explain to a employer at 22 why they have a 7th grade education.

I'm not blaming you, but when something goes wrong we naturally try to make ourselves sound as innocent as possible.

It doesn't sound like you're a respected person at school, neither am I and I know how it feels >__>
But just because he's mentally challenged doesn't mean he should get away with half the stuff he does; you should be okay if asked about it.
In the future, report him.
The class was greenhouse management (BS class with an easy A. GPA Buffer for the lazy and the rednecks.) The greenhouse is seperate from the rest of the school. This happened while we were outside. A teacher (a sub) saw what happened or at least the end, and saw it as MY fault. I explained what happened to him and I guess that was good enough for him. He didn't seem the type who wanted to get involved, the day was basically spent doing nothing.

No. And where's the moral dilemma? He "attacked" you, you defended yourself. Just because he's retarded doesn't mean he can do whatever he wants.
Bingo.

A lot of the dilemmas I read about on The Escapist are just completely stupid. People get bagged out for the stupidest things. Humanity is full of pricks. Perhaps a genocidal rampage is in order?

Bring a switchblade or crowbar. You have no idea how many times just the sight of a weapon will dissuade people.

Seriously, I have to deal with quite a few at my school.

Restraining him was the best thing you could have done, or else who knows where he (or you) would have ended up?
