http://www.cracked.com/article_18571_5-reasons-its-still-not-cool-to-admit-youre-gamer.html

Take a read and I think you will feel as depressed as I am.

Edit: My point isn't about being cool here so stop reading it like that. My point is that the definition of gamer is everyday becoming synonymous with Asshat douchebag. This affects us as a collective, this is why games are continually becoming more and more retarded. Is anyone actually doing more than reading the title?

2nd Edit: I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT BEING COOL.

See, the thing is I just stopped caring years ago. If I find it fun, I find it fun. It isn't up to anyone else to decide how I feel about something. If I don't like the game, I play a game I do like.

Light is right if you constantly wonder what others think of you then your bound to always be depressed.

Everyone knows i'm a gamer my Facebook hasn't got a pic of me, it has the Heavy from TF2

You should't care about people knowing your gamer, if they call you a nerd for playing games then they nerd for using anything technological.

Your game fu is weak, grasshopper. How is it said? Let your freak flag fly!

Seriously, buy the games you want, critique the parts you think need it (like YES, I was one of the people who got sick of all the people playing naked in WAR and asked for the video equivalent of a profanity filter that would allow me to see them at least wearing a bathrobe on my screen) and have fun. By the way, his review did focus on first person shooters, then complain about problems that are most heavily concentrated in that genre. RPGs even do a better job than that most of the time, and he ignored my favorite game type entirely -- RTS's.

I don't mean me, I mean the larger parts of the community. I am depressed about them. I don't do any of that shit but I know that I am considered a part of the same group by the societal pigeon-hole system.

As long as we don't care how other think of us, then we're fine. Which is basically saying that we have to ninja ourselves through daily life just to get by. Now I'm sad.

This article talks about, and to its target audience.
Namely, you guys.

By being the proud owner of a uterus, I am instantly excluded from their address, and find that it speaks very specifically about... Well, the games most of you guys are playing. Mostly American FPSs, with the occasional WoW, and the Indie Bundle. Of course, when you're in a situation where you'd be worried about describing yourself based on the level of, "Cool," I suppose it would be talking specifically about this subsection of the gaming cultureverse.

We need to redifine what a "Gamer" really is, I mean what is a "gamer"?
Heres a funny webcomic which makes sense if you think about it:

Good point, someone somewhere in the world will probably hate you, if you're black then some white guy will hate you, if you're white some black guy will hate you, if you're mexican some American will hate you, if you're American everyone else will hate you and the fact that they've never met you won't stop them. People will always rely on stereotypes and prejudice a bit too much because they're useful at stopping us from doing stupid sh*t like walking up to a biker gang and asking where the Star Wars convention is, so it's really not worth feeling ashamed of yourself and what you do just because of prejudice. In fact if you're disproving the negative stereotypes that gamers are lumbered with then that's all the more reason to point out to people who and what you are.

Unless you are an asshat, that truly knows no gender.

I'm not ashamed of myself that's not the point of this thread, the fact is there is a large amount of truth in that article and that is what is making me sad about the community. He's not wrong. I'm not one of those guys but those guys are the gaming community as far as everyone is concerned. That's what I'm saying.

I have to say most gamers I've come across don't really think what others say so a article like that is like insulting a brick wall.

OT: This is pretty deep lol

Years ago i found something on the unreal tournament site where they had a gamer who had resqued an older lady from being run over by a truck.
"Years of gaming gave me those freaky reflexes to pull such a stunt off" or something similar was quoted.
So, gaming is not bad, you an resque people with the experience.

Check the search bar buddy, not to mention that one links to older ones...

Anyway that's how society sees us, with common stereotypes such as the ones surrounding Xbox live (they are based in reality, stereotypes have to come from somewhere) and until these sorts of stereotypes can be broken nothing is going to change. Unless there is some sort of maturity serum invented soon that we can inject into the half of the gaming community that are these unintelligent trigger happy ass hats, i highly doubt that we can shake the stereotypes for a very long time

I've never had trouble with my gaming.

I had trouble because I enjoyed maths and science.

Half the "cool" people in school (when I was there, anyway) were the stereotypical jocks, but the rest were gamers.

And now my gamer friends (I have a few) wonder how I can aim weapons with ballistic trajectories better than they can. I say "I paid attention in Physics" and they regretfully look back on teasing me for doing so.
