For some reason it wouldn't let me edit the above post :/

Here's some games i would suggest, mainly going for a bit older games you can pick up cheap:

- The Longest Journey & Dreamfall (Brilliant Point & Click Adventure games)
- Dark Messiah of Might & Magic (First Person Fantasy RPG, good fun)
- Beyond Good & Evil (Third Person Action game)
- Portal & Portal 2 (Seriously, everyone in the world needs to have played these)
- Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (If you like a good RTS, this one is pretty brilliant)
- Deus Ex (The original if you don't mind REALLY old games, Human Revolution if you just want a good shooter with a cool story)
- Dragon Age 1 & 2 (Good fanatsy RPGs) & Mass Effect 1, 2 & 3 (Good Sci-Fi RPGs)

I'll post more when I can think of more.
Added Longest Journey, looks interesting.

I have played both Portal games on my xbox as well as Dragon Age/Mass Effect series and Beyond Good and evil on my PS2 and got the HD one for 360.

Will look into Supreme commander, but I wasn't a fan of Total Annihilation so I may not like it. Still, I imagine it's quite different now.

I already own them on 360, as stated next to the first two on my list :)
The mods alone make picking them up on PC worth it. Plus you can get them for 5-10 bucks on sale, so not a ton of money.

Will keep an eye out, people keep telling me that the mods are really good, so will do :)

Any other games you can recommend?

With those specs, you'll be able to play any game for years to come.
Just keep an eye on the steam sales and hope you'll be able to save enough money for food.
Wow, really? That kinda surprises me. Although, now that you mention it, my brother who has been helping me with all things computer did say it would be a decent gaming PC.
Absolutely.
Mine has lasted for over 5 years, and it wasn't even powerful to begin with. 2.6GHz Dual Core, 4 GB RAM and a GeForce 8800GT, making it a mid-range budget machine even when it was brand new, and it still plays most games on high settings without problems.

I see a lot of people always going on about how you have to upgrade them constantly, and that's why they prefer consoles. But I'm starting to realize this isn't true for the most part.

Once upon a time, that was the case.
It was before and during the netburst era, which was the early 2000s. Then dual cores happened and computers skyrocketed ahead of the consoles, which held back the computer requirements. Ever since, games haven't really become that much more demanding.
In other words, the 'you have to upgrade every other month' stuff has been bullshit for 6 years.

1: Wait for Steam Holiday Sale
2: Buy many games for less than 75% their original price
3: Check other digital distributors trying to compete with Steam (Impulse, Gamersgate, Origin)
4: If they also have nice deals, buy moar games, otherwise, proceed directly to step 5
5: ???
6: Profit

GOTHIC 2

(best action RPG ever, seriously, google it)

Deus Ex 1. 2 actually isn't as bad as everybody says it is, in fact, it's a well crafted, tight little package, BUT, due to the fact that the gameplay is a step down from the first one, AND it's shorter, everybody whines about it. Deus Ex 2 is actually superior to the third one in terms of gameplay, but this isn't really the thread for such a discussion. In the third one you could master every skill available, but both one and two make you choose between 2 or 3 skills or biomods per body part. In this way you're forced to specialize.

Gothic 3 with community patch 1.75

Oblivion with the Nehrim Total Conversion Mod (it's literally a different game, so maybe MOD is the wrong word)

The Baldur's Gate series is being remade, so there's that, but I haven't played them. And there's Knights of the Old Republic, if you missed it on the XBOX

Gothic 2

Gothic 2

Gothic 2

And to all of those people telling him to get console ports, seriously, he said he's joining the PC community, he didn't say he just pulled his head out of his ass.

I'm not really the best person to ask though as I don't game on the PC unless I absolutely have to, which I did for Gothic 2 (best action RPG ever)

That was good value I have to say. You should be able to play pretty much anything you want as long as you turn down the GFX settings on more demanding games. My Q9400 @3.2GHz with a GTX 260 hasn't had anything it cant do yet. I play a lot of BF3.

As what others are recommending, waiting for a Steam sale would be a good idea. I would also highly recommend getting lots of Source games as they will run really well on your machine while still looking good. Also the Black Mesa mod just came out if you would like to play HL1 but can't stand the 1998 graphics. All you need is the free Source SDK Base 2007 from Steam. Then you can move on to HL2.

I have played a little of that actually, I had forgotten about it so I will look at getting Gothic 2.

As for that last part, what exactly did you mean by that?

Yeah, my brother said I would have been an idiot to pass up the chance to buy it off her.

I have played a bit of Black Mesa and it's amazing so far.

That's a lot, I'll look into some of them, but time is also a factor, what with the backlog I have to get into with games I have found and people have suggested.

Also, played all of the Legacy of Kain series on my consoles across the years, awesome series.

Fallout: New Vegas (Get it, get the community made high-res texture packs, enhanced shaders etc)

Black Mesa (It's free, it's an improved remake of a classic and it's wonderful)

Sign up to GOG.com, download the clients for Steam and Desura and start browsing their catalogues. Eventually you should find your way to Thomas was Alone, buy that.

Maybe go for Europa Universalis III if you like a deep and challenging strategy game. And its sister titles, Hearts of Iron III, Victoria II, and Crusader Kings II. Alternatively, the Total War series is quite a bit more accessible - Shogun II TW is great.

Okay, you're about the third person to mention Fallout 3/New Vegas. I get it, the mods are cool and I will prob get it at some point, but they aren't as much of a priority as stuff I have yet to play at all yet :)

As for Black Mesa, grabbed it last night, am loving it!

This one I have been hearing heaps about and already have it on my list, cheers :)

Already on Steam and GoG, pretty sure my badges next to my avatar should show Steam, unless they aren't for some reason.

Desura? Can't say I've heard of that one, will keep an eye out of the game you mentioned too, thanks for the input.

It's thanks to some people on this site I have come across some games I never would have known about already :)

Made by the devs who did Hearts of Iron? Or inspired by? Either way that's promising, will look into those - added to list. I'm going to be busy gaming, that's for sure.

Play the free games.
Ok, that may sound odd, but there are so many great f2p games out there.

Like mixing your puzzles with politics?
Puzzle Pirates

Like first person shooter?
Blacklight: Retribution or Tribes: Ascend

How about a superhero MMO?
DC Universe Online

Being yelled at?
League of Legends

Play the crap out of those games, and only if you think it's worth your money, buy some stuff from the store.

I have tried all of them actually, DCUO wasn't my thing, which surprised me being a big DC comics fan (Am wearing a Barry Allen/Flash shirt as I type this) and I didn't like LoL either to be honest, I did try that one for a few days and just couldn't get into the groove of things.

Puzzle Pirates sounds interesting though, thanks for that suggestion.
