I think I hate to talk about music more than anything else.

*friend listens for a bit*

"Yeah, man, it's pretty good."

It's at this point where I can tell they don't really care at all and that I'm wasting my time. They've probably even stopped listening to it after 30 seconds or so. Sometimes I go on about it anyway because I'm just in that great of a mood, but at the end of the day, it kind of bugs me how when it comes to music, I can't relate to anyone.
You're not really presenting yourself well here.

"Nobody likes/knows/listens/is interested, in the music I like so I'm gonna refuse to talk about music or go on a rant about how super special awesome elite111!!!111 it is even if I know that person isn't really interested."

And why? to satisfy yourself? You sound a little bit like an ass.

I mean yeah, it is nice to be able to talk about your interests and be able to share them but you shouldn't be angry at people for not sharing them, just accept it.

Besides this is the internet if you know where to look you can find people with similar tastes in music and talk to them over message boards.

So you hate that people aren't willing to listen to more than 30 seconds when you send them a link. Then when they want to talk about music you just want to change the subject.

I think this a thing that goes both ways actually...

OT: Personally I don't mind talking about music even though most of my friends don't like the same kind. Then again I don't talk about how awesome the music I listen to is, I talk about how much I like it and why I like it.

Eh, actually, I don't refuse the subject, yet. I feel like I should, but I just can't bring myself to do it, I guess.

But the conversations still never seem to go anywhere. :/

Like I'll listen to why they like their music and I'm happy that they like it, but I just can't relate because I don't also like that music. x_x

I usually do talk about why I like certain things about the songs I like, it's just that no one ever seems interested in what I'm saying. :p

It's still disappointing how I have these musical tastes that no one can seem to relate to.

Actually, you could make a pretty convincing argument for Dubstep not being music. Especially since you have previously deferred to the knowledge of theoriticians
A theoretician who tells you that dubstep isn't music is either having you on or talking out of his arse.

Anyway, I tend to go for prog bands or heavy or a combination thereof, so it isn't exactly popular stuff. But some of the bands I like are at least well known within metalhead circles so I can still have a decent conversation about them. Plus, I tend to keep up with a whole lot of other music too just 'cos its something I enjoy.

Well, I agree that it sucks to not have common likes in music though I am usually able to find common ground while secretly converting my peers into liking what I like. I mostly listen to punk rock in some form where a lot of it actually sounds terrible so I wont fault people for disliking it. However most of my favourite bands are somewhat diverse so I am able to find songs that even my mom could listen to (not a good measurement since she probably likes harder music than any of my friends). Still presenting any topic you're passionate about is about presentation. When I say that my music is so awesome I was unable to talk the day after a concert and that I woke up with my face covered in blood and a broken thumb people at least seem interested in the topic if not the music itself.

However I am able to discuss anything with pretty much anyone.
It's hard to find someone who likes this... I understand why though...

I don't talk about it anymore unless its with people who enjoy similar tastes as me. Like some others on here above I listen to the metal. Ambient,Doom,Black,Death,Melodic Death,Symphonic, (some)gothic, pagan, groove, post, alternative - Metal. Sometimes I like sharing it forums like these to get some diverse opinions, since it can be fun sometimes.

I also think sad, depressing, melancholic songs are the best out there which naturally puts me at odds with like 90% of music lovers.

I'm not 18 anymore, and thus don't care about defending the faith against the "screaming isn't music" arguments etc. etc. Many people consider ppl who like underground music to be snobby and rude about other music. Its true, and I'm not going to say there aren't rude ppl out there (and I admit in my youth I was definitely one of them). My taste in music has become more open lately though and I find myself listening to slower instrumental pieces, like this one. This one really tugs at my heart strings and I really don't know why, but I love it.

I pretty much only have one friend with whom I can talk music. Nobody else I know has the same musical taste as me. Sure, there are common bands or artists. But they are generally few and far between.

That may, however, be in so small part due to my tendency to find obscure and/or foreign music.
Examples plawks?
Les Elephants Bizarres [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bc06x9z8u7o], Romanian "indie/pop/disco/funk/punk" according to their Facebook.
Gogol Bordello [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grKaSsyvxZE], gypsy punk. The members are all from the former Soviet Union (if I remember correctly), but the band itself started in Manhattan.
Shemales From Outta Space of Death [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOl3L1Iz9bw], German electrodeathcore.
Ready, Set, Fall! [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaVj50B2W-E], Italian alt-metal.
Caravan Palace [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sBZdSHAIZI], French electroswing.
Wolfgang Parker [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Idz5WhXjtD0], punk swing.
Man on Earth [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcW3Lf0JDYw], experimental rock.
Exist Trace [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZjlIKiCj3g], Japanese visual kei.
I knew gypsy punk/Gorgol Bordello beforehand, but the rest of this is new to me.

And, aside from the Shemales and Caravan songs, I enjoyed all of it very much. :D
Shemales I can understand. But you didn't like Caravan Palace? Maaaan. Electroswing is like my favorite genre. D:

I am glad you enjoyed the majority of it, though. c:

Challenge Accepted.

OP, post some examples of music you enjoy.

I'll bet you five lolcats that someone in this thread enjoys them as well.
What if the thread dies before anyone says they share my taste in music? Do I get a BRAND NEW CAR?!? :D

I'm glad that I could help. Mind if I ask which bands? Because you just got me really interested in Maudlin of the Well, Estradasphere, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Thank YOU! :D
I really love it when that happens :D

In terms of MotW I really recommend loading getting their last album Part, The second which you can download for free on their website [http://www.maudlinofthewell.net/]. It's unbelievably introspective and is quite similar to the song I mentioned above. Bath is also very good [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l81sj5IvPRg], though you have to get used to the growling metal-parts. Pretty much everything Estradasphere is brilliant, though be sure to check out those two [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=romVeYGa5CI] songs [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNO8BQTTKYg] of applied awesomeness.

As for your question: Madeon and Steam Powered Giraffe. The first is an enjoyably varied piece from a genre I normally don't look into that much, and the second has probably one of the most stylistically interesting videos I've seen in a while. It also helps that the song is a very quiet piece which kind of reminds me of some 50s evergreen and contrasts very well with their steam/diesel-punk appearance. Also, while I knew Streetlight Manifesto, Ratatat and Parov Stelar I think they just went up on my list of things I have to look into.

Btw as for the latter you might also like the Smokey Bandits [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-POu4qnfVdU] and Caravan Palace [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9Ca89gxbjU] who also couple electronica with swing or whatever the hell the Smokey Bandits use there...

EDIT: After clicking on some of those links around here....I think I have to fetch the cookie jar for this thread...

I never talk about music to my friends. Luckily in japan we have karaoke boxes where you can force people to listen to your taste in music, and sing is while your at it.

Well that's the thing. I listen to almost every genre of music, but I judge music on a song by song basis.

My brain sees music sort of in the same way that it sees movies. If a movie has too many cliches in it or is extremely predictable, I'll get really bored of it really fast.

It's the same thing with music. If I can predict almost every single note or if the riffs or note progressions are cliche, then I'll get bored of it really fast.

Like, I'll listen to acoustic music for example, but I physically can't listen to music where the acoustic guitar isn't there for any reason other than to sit in the background and play tired chords while the main singer sings over it and takes pretty much all of the musical presence. Showcases of someone's singing skills can be great, but I'll be more impressed when it's a song where I get the impression that both the guitar and the singer were put into equal consideration when the song was written.

Or another example is that I can't listen to most classical rock (or at least the ones my friends turn on) because I find that its some of the more predictable music, but I can listen to Queen and other classical rock bands that put equal emphasis on their instrumental music.

I can listen to rap. I don't actively seek it out, but I have found a few songs I enjoy in that genre. I found myself listening to this song all day for example, because I was impressed by its lyrics, energy, and the fact that the music is actually just as important as the rapping. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfo-EGDBEAY
I think this might be part of the problem; a lot of people just listen to whatever they've been told is popular which tends to be predictable and sound pretty much the same as every other band they like.
Or they hear a decent track from one genre and then just listen to everything in that genre with no preference.

Keep doing what you're doing, listen to interesting stuff, if nobody else gets it then who cares. Music is always going to be subjective and if nobody likes what you like, it doesn't matter.

Also that POS track was awesome, thanks for the link =D

I didn't. I got the impression that you can't accept it when people do not share your tastes. Not you accepting other peoples tastes.

I don't even know where you got the idea that I "rant" at my friends about my personal music tastes or that I only do things to satisfy myself.
You considering whether or not to refuse to talk about music with people just because their tastes don't match yours and they're not as interested in music as you. To me that seems kinda childish.

And when you talk about music to your friends even if they if they seem disinterested you continue to talk about how brilliant this song is and how much you love it regardless of how they feel. Which to me comes off a little inconsiderate and selfish.
