If you think of music purely in a series of sounds that are taken individually as pleasing, and not of a deeper sense of expression by the musician in question, then yes.
Yes, music is art, music is also.. MUSIC. Its like saying you didn't like Saints Row because the intent behind it was "Make Grand Theft Auto amounts of cash."
The intent doesn't change the product because I can fucking promise you at least ninety five percent of humanity are greed mongers when given the right chance to be.
And the popularity of it doesn't change the sound either. So what was it tht made people hate them, them treating their loyal fans like criminals, or being "popular"?
Might be my sociology class kicking in but some people simply feel outcasted, or are downright disgusted by society at large and therefore are alienated when things they feel are underground and theirs become apart of the monster they hate.
Metallica had, for a long time, been underground, and some of their fans may have suddenly found themselves to be apart of the society they never wanted to be apart of.
Then again, yes, there are some that forsake the "art" on the action of the artist. God forbid someone just experience the art and ignore the artist which, most times, are raving lunatics.
On topic, I would say that about somewhere around ninety percent of the population feed into hype and base their opinions around it, either following the hype without realizing it, or forsaking the hype outright.
Judging a game either way before you ever play it or know it.
Why.. That sounds vaguely familiar to another aspect of humanity.
