They've been garbage since season 12 started, with that episode where Bart was suddenly, inexplicably, a wannabe rapper. There was not a single bad episode before that point, and there have been no good episodes since.

I think they have just become far more blatant in general. Not just in their 'adult' humor but in just about everything, even their political stuff or when they do references. My criticism is just that the show was written a lot better before rather than now being too obvious and relying too much on callbacks to previous characters that should have been one-shot characters- too obsessed with indulging in some kind of Simpsons Universe.

Although, losing Phil Hartman is another contributing factor...

The humor has gotten more mature and political so yeh.. I guess that's alot funnier than cartoon slapstick and the american dream..

I would watch it more if regular TV showed the new episodes but i'm sick to death of the old.

Well I only started watching in 2003 or so, because I was still only 9 years old, and I've found the show to be consistently excellent. A little rough since the movie came out (witch was fantastic), but still pretty damn funny, and definitely going toe-to-toe with Family Guy

I loved the series from the start(here in germany).
They should have stopped the show with a great millenium special.
This way I would have only good things to say of it.
I enjoyed only very few episodes in the last 10 years (that's friggin 10 years) and stopped watching the series regularly about seven years ago...
... while I still can watch the DVD's of the older season for hours.

Oh and btw:
A few years ago I started watching series and movie in the original language instead of the german synched version.
Almost everything is better in the original... exept "The Simpsons" got "better" in the german version, altough the changed some major voices(eg Marge) due to the death of the speakers wich still feels somehow weird...
So much for the "quality writing" of the show...

I sort of lost interest over the years. Not because it was bad, but because I just found myself tuning in to other shows on at the time. Though, I've heard time and again how much the "new" Simpson's suck in comparison to the so-called "Glory Days" of the show. But I have watched a couple of the newer ones not too long ago, and I have highly disagree that the series is losing its charm. I still find it genuinely funny!

Ps i miss the classic john swarzwalder episodes and troy mcclure :(
They retired Troy Mcclure and Lionel Hutz because the voice actor was killed.
This is a good point, I think the loss of Phil Hartman was a massive blow, and John Schwartzwelder episodes have been few and far between lately (he is something of a recluse, apparently, so perhaps that's forgivable). Though I'd say the introduction of Gil is a pretty good replacement for Lionel Hutz, regardless. :D
