Dude...Demons Souls. The soon to be released Dark Souls.

Play them, let them crush you, learn and then dominate them!

Funny theme going. It seems, and I'll agree, that Japanese games in general have the hardest boss fights. Although Resident Evil maybe dropped a bit in standard lately. Ninja games, and even Dead Rising bosses were very difficult (for me). But look what most people have listed, including your MGS1. All Japanese!

I'll add another: Vanquish. Which is still somewhat easy compared to Ninja Gaiden 2. And don't forget Devil May Cry.
Incidentally, play Devil May Cry 3..the original, not the Special Edition

Seriously, that games bosses (Especially on DMD difficulty) are soul crushingly hard.

Shinobi for PS2 is also a good choice.

well i'd like to say super meat boy, but the bosses are usually easier than some of the levels.

Although you'd have to use what you've learned to beat the bosses.. well except the lava boss, that one was just a stupid memory game.

Deus Ex: human revolution, last boss is so hard almost not possible.

Oh wait that was sarcasm.

(*spoiler alert*)
punched trough a wall or two and burnt her with the laser got so boring so I don't even use the laser now I hack and stealth and shoot, well still to try: complete stealth/pacifist/hardest

Fallout: New Vegas. No, really. Especially Old World Blues and the giant mechascorp.
Exactly what I was going to say. Crank the difficulty up to Very Hard (or even Hard) and attempt some of the stuff....

Dead Money is an absolute ***** - there was one point where I had about 10 hp, a crippled leg and had to get from the tower to the exit (just after you spark the event). I'm not gonna lie, I had to turn the difficulty down to easy for that bit, as I just got skewered whenever I inevitably encountered a Ghost.
Old World Blues had it's moments of difficulty too, but not as much as Dead Money IMO.

Also, just generally around the Wasteland. For starters, on Hard/Very Hard mode, you can get royally f'ed up by a lot of things, especially if you're on Hardcore mode too. Then you get Legionary or NCR assassins come after you...which is not cool either, as they spawn when you least want them too. Lastly, the final boss is a bit of a ***** too. Take stimpacks and mines....

I don't want boss battles at all. Just a bit more diversity in the enemy's is fine. If you have a game where you can kill everyone with one well aimed shot in the face. The boss should die to it as wel.
To easy?

Then don't have bosses.

But that's just me.

I don't think that's a boss battle. You can hack a thing to make it easier. That's totally against the other's boss' philosophy of "fuck multiskills, hope you packed a gun, *****"

Monster Hunter.

Hands-down, the best game for boss battles. This isn't just a fanboy speaking here, it's the shared opinion of an overwhelming majority of the players who've played the series.
speaking as some1 who doesnt really love monster hunter shes right the boss battles are pretty good

Japanese games tend to be the way to go for your "do this to hurt him and he gets stronger the more damage he takes" type of boss. They are normally more challenging and frustrating.
Whereas western games will be more "this guy is about a foot bigger than you and has got out of his face on painkillers fill him with lead" style bosses.

Yea I agree since the first "boss" I only packed a few bullets for the 10mm and a few tranqs and stealth/hacker augs..., the first time that did not end nice. At all. or the following tries until I picked up the shotgun I couldn't do it with the few tranqs I had...

Shin Megami Tensei games. Especially those with an option for difficulty. I've had many an exhilarating experience of beating certain bosses when i'm a single turn away from defeat.

For example Persona 4 on hard mode against Shadow Naoto. My MC is the only one left alive on dismal health but so is the boss. Of all the attacks it could have used, it chose "Brave Blade" a very powerful physical attack, but I had a counter ability on my Persona hence the boss dealt the final blow to itself. That was pretty durn lucky.

Also Nocturne can be a nightmare on normal difficulty, I'm glad i didn't play on hard!

Have sex with me This.

Monster Hunter--particularly the older ones (Freedom Unite and past) have some stupidly hard boss battles. And the entire game is boss battles. (Fuck Teostra. FUCK HIM WITH AN ICICLE MADE OF PURE BULLSHITIUM.)

Also, Shin Megami Tensei. Or, judging by Radiant Historia, any game with the Atlus label on it. Fucking giant spiders and their stupid massive defense/offense and inability to let me air juggle their asses.
Agreed, anything with Atlus plastered onto the cover is ridiculous. Demon's Souls and Catherine for example. Catherine is beyond ridiculous if you're not very good at puzzlers, because the bosses in Catherine can and WILL ruin your day, on more ways than one. And as someone said before me, Ninja Gaiden has some pretty sick boss battles. Though they're technically more damage sponges than anything. :s

I like challenging bosses, not unrealistically powerful bosses. Deus Ex seems to throw me bosses of the latter category. Augmentations or not, Barrett is still human. It should not take me 50 rounds of revolver ammo to the head to kill the bastard. Assassin's Creed has some great boss battles, too. And if you're an MMO person, Guild Wars is quite amazing with their bosses and boss-like foes.

Teehee. You're doing it wrong. :p
Actually, it's not the grind that is wrong. It's bothering much with the materia. You DO need to be some high of levels in order to survive the attacks Emerald throws at you, or you can just forget the whole thing. The thing is that messing with the materia is the trap. Go in with very little of it and you stand a better chance. And incidentally, I DID beat the bugger, so I kinda' know of what I speak.
You only need to survive a single attack before you go into auto-murder mode. Equip everyone with Counter+Mime (which you won't need to grind for, they master very easily) and start the fight with W-Summon KOTR. Then stand there and let her stomp you once, ta-dah, you now have 6 recasts of KOTR queued up, which she won't survive. Walk away from your console for about 15min, as it takes a while.

If there is any grinding, it's doing the goofy chocobo breeding to get KOTR.

I last game that I played that had a challanging boss fight was the first God of War. Even then it was only the Ares final form that was annoying. I have been told Demon Souls has plenty but I havnt gotten around to playing that game yet.
Demon's Souls has some awesome bosses and a couple of lame ones, but they are all memorable, especially when you take them down the first time.

Flamelurker springs to mind, once you know the game well he isn't that difficult but when you first meet him he is hell incarnate. Then there is Maneater who even when I know I am set up right and have a good tactic can often cause me death, although as with most of Demon's Souls it will be my fault I die.

Hehe yeah Nocturne hates you and it doesn't care what you think of it. Matador was horrendous at the time you meet him unless you are perfectly set up for it. Then it gets worse.

Demon's souls!

Buy it, play it, love it, hate it, marry it, burn it and buy it again!
I dream of the day when game disks become indestructible so that they can take some serious punishment and still be able to play them again with no problem.
