Which is the 8th word in the OP.

OT: Amnesia is THE scary game. It's on Steam and in the Humble Indie Bundle 5 - take your pick. Let's have a brief recap - for starters you are helpless - you are armed with just a light. Oh and it attracts monsters. However, fumbling in the dark makes your character more insane.

Alone in the Dark if you can stomach the games being older, it's quite good.

Silent Hill series - well a staple of horror games.

Call of Cthulhu®: Dark Corners of the Earth - OK, I haven't tried it but I've heard it's quite good.
I love the Cthulhu mythos! Is it for PC? And I have heard a lot of good things about the first three silent hill games, I guess I really need to check those out! Thank you.
Call of Cthulhu is also glitched out to hell. In some cases, it is literately unbeatable.

The Void, awesome game, tough as hell though for a variety of reasons. Weird trippy setting and mechanics.

Amnesia of course, but you've probably already played it. Might want to check out Penumbra (previous project of the same people). Heard good things about System Shock, too (although that's a rather old game).
I would love to play System Shock! Especially the second one, but they are so hard to find, I guess i will have to dish out 50 or 60 bucks for one on ebay... and yes I have played Amnesia it was a very good one and I cannot wait for the second to come out!
system shock is a good game, but its hard for alot of players to get their head around the controls plus the actual play area of the UI is tiny.. that said.. look at you hacker.. running through my corridors
Look up System Shock Portable, fixes a lot and allows mouse look and much higher resolutions. Mouse look makes it much easier to get into.

Resident Evil 2 is pretty fantastic, there's that Amnesia game for the PC. Fallout 3 can be frightening at times, especially in the dusty museums and sewers. Also, Bioware scared the fuck out-a me; might be in the minority though.
Bioware? You mean Bioshock? Lol, I get those two confused as well.
Don't mind me, just posting without thinking. :D

I'll list all the games I've played that I found genuinely scary:
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Irisu Syndrome [sub](That game... that... fucking game...)[/sub]
SCP: Containment Breach
SCP-087 [small](If that counts as a game)[/small]
Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 4: The Room
Ao Oni
Ib [small](Sort of. It had some fantastic moments, but most if it is jump scares. Good ones, though. And not all the scares are jump scares.)[/small]
Condemned [small](Also sort of)[/small]
Alien Trilogy [small](Also sort of... it's at least scary for such an old game)[/small]

I assume Silent Hill 3 is too, but I haven't gotten 'round to playing it yet.

People only talk about it being hardcore, but Dark Souls is actually a great horror game. Plenty of scary monsters and locations.

It depends on what type of 'horror' you're going for? For pulse-pounding tense horror, I can echo Amnesia, Penumbra: Overture and Black Plague, Condemned: Criminal Origins, System Shock 2...

For a slightly different, more psychological mind-fuckery type of horror, I can echo Silent Hill 2/3, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, and then recommend something that apparently nobody else played or liked... Alice: Madness Returns. And, by extension, American McGee's Alice, which you'll want to play before Madness Returns. Though it's certainly a product of a by-gone era of level design.

EDIT: Also, considering the fact that practically everything can and will kill you, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls do the atmosphere really well.

Hm, I don't play many scary games (if any at all) but I guess I'll give this a shot. The Fatal Frame series?

I am going to be super-hipstery and only recommend games these fine gentlemen have forgotten:

Lone Survivor. Basically indie, 2d, 8-bit Silent Hill

I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. A old Point and click with a inherently creepy and morbid story and writing. Based on a short story by the same name.

I've not played them but I hear the Dark Fall series is darned creepy. All but the most recent are 360 degrees, point and click adventures in the style of Myst, though, if that bothers you. The most recent apparently has more conventional first person controls, though.

Might be stretching the definition of "horror" a little, but Another World/Out of This World and Heart of Darkness are pretty damn creepy.

Also, if you like survival horror maybe you'll be interested in checking out it's roots? Project Firestart is surprisingly creepy for it's day and the earliest survival horror game I can think of. It's on the Commodore 64; it's not aged amazingly well, but it's still enjoyable in the right mindset and is a brilliant little piece of history. Every survival horror fan should play it just to see how far the genre has come.

Amnesia, Penumbra, Silent Hill, Painkiller had some creepy levels, Condemned, and if you have the Half Life series and Fallout 3 there are some good horror mods for them.

Lone Survivor... don't understand how not a single person has said this, sure it's got a childish aesthetic... but that's how it gets you...

EDIT: didn't realize two other people had recommended it

If you own Half-Life 2, then the mod "Nightmare House 2" is great. You only need the second one, because the original one was just a map and it wasn't well made. 2 contains the original map, but remade, so it's a win-win, plus it's free.
On the topic of half life mods... check out Korsakovia... possibly the scariest things I've ever played... just mind warping and disturbing on every level...<.<

Also, check out the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series... it's more atmospheric and subtle than straight up scary... but it's absorbing to the point of having a long lasting effect...

System Shock 2 as well... just like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. it nails the feeling of being completely alone and vulnerable in a hostile environment... so it's more the atmosphere being disturbing than the game having actual scares...<.<

So only one mention of Fatal frame series so far?

And NO mention of Forbidden Siren series?!

Seriously, play them.

They're masterworks all, you can't go wrong!

I'm sorry but I read the "I have no Mouth and I must Scream" short story... it has greatly disturbed me and I will not play the game! Thank you for your suggestions anyways ;)
