Hey there, I'm looking for some suggestions for musicians to listen to during my end of semester crunch. My tastes are broad and I only really dislike rap/hip hop, heavy metal with growling vocals, super country country. This does not mean that I cannot listen to songs with these elements in them, but that I tend to dislike songs in which these are the defining characteristics.

I will try and give every suggestion the ol' college (or university) try.

Music that I like:
The Shins, Tool, The Mars Volta, Lana Del Rey, Sia, London Grammar, Elle King, St. Vincent, Dead Sara, Bob Dylan, Eva and the Vagabond Tales, Pusicfer, Kasbian, Whitehorse, Wintersleep, The D0.

^ This is not an exhaustive list, but should give people a benchmark to work with. That being said, I'm up for trying anything and I will get back to you about what I thought.

Thanks!

You could try listening to Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, Goldfrapp, Bjork might also be something, but different.

Fan of both Tool and Mars Volta? Rishloo is a perfect fit.

You would probably enjoy Antemasque as well. The new project from the singer of Mars Volta. Songs are more straight forward but still have that good ol' MV feel.

Also, give Baroness a listen! Their Yellow album is amazing.

I adore Tori Amos, thanks for the suggestion though :)

I will check out Peter Gabriel and Goldfrapp and get back to you on 'em. I already listen to Bjork and quite enjoy her work. King Crimson, I tried out a while ago and didn't care for them - but I will give them another go :)

I do enjoy Antemasque, not as much as TMV, but a decent replacement. Have never heard of Rishloo or Baroness and will check them out ASAP.

Thanks everyone :)

Seeing as you have Tool and Puscifer on your list I'd guess you already know of A Perfect Circle, if not here you go

When I'm working I like to listen to stuff with fewer lyrics as I find it less of a distraction, as such I present Mogwai

Puscifer tool and perfect circle, the Maynard holy trinity of genius. Good fellows great taste I sense!

I have fairly broad tastes also, which makes it difficult to narrow down recommendations. But i'll give it a go;

The cat empire, great fun loving musicians with much.variety

Infected mushroom/shpongle, I hesitate to give them a genre but let's just say psy-trance with some great knowledge of composition and oh my, the sounds...so many interesting pretty sounds!

Spor, not for everyone...very heavy drum n base, good for energy and releasing aggression.

Mattafix, trip hop(nothing like hip hop)...i think they were in charts at some point, so they could be well known...i wouldn't know. Ill throw a Massive Attack and portishead recommendation in here too, but they are definately well known.

You may know Xavier Rudd, as I see the shins. I sortof wore myself out of his music, but still a talented musician with many good ideas.

Dub fx. Is he well known by now? He should be. Creates whole songs live by just using his voice, a selection of loop pedals and some very catchy beatboxing.

Dragontears, recently heard them accidently and they have a very nice 70s sound to them that feels familiar for no particular reason.

That may be all for now. Best of luck to your ears, sir!

Edit: erm Abney Park does steampunk through and, through. They have little flaws that kind of adds to the charm, but many may not agree.

I actually really like APC, Thirteenth Step might be one of my all time favorite albums.

Heard of Mogwai, but have never heard them. Will check out.

Not a fan of Korn, Lacuna Coil, or NIN (which is odd, given how often NIN and Maynard collab) Will check out Rasputina, Kate Bush, Fields of the Nephilim, and PJ Harvey.

Thanks again, everyone!

I'm not much into Japanese music (I'm totally a classic rock guy) but Shiina Ringo has become my favorite musician of all-time. She put together a rock band, Tokyo Jihen, which is the best rock band since the classic rock era and she does her own solo stuff as well, she uses pretty much every instrument including violins, horns, harps, accordions, etc.

I first thing I thought about after entering this thread:

I really enjoy listening to stuff from Gorillaz, Nujabes, Duane and Brando, Tupac, A Tribe Called Quest, Anime, Jazz, Adult Swim, Pony and anything else even remotely related and/or referenced to them in any way, shape, or form... including those that are basically mashups of two or more different songs...
And then I thought about...
FPLOON said:
Right now, I have been listening to these songs on shuffle on my PSP all this (and last) week:
Including these albums in particular:
For some reason, one(?) of the interludes were sped up a bit... (Eh...)
Could not find a single video with all the songs together... So, this was the best I could do... right now...
Huh... I feel like I posted some of these before... *shrugs*
which you can use to find some music/songs to listen to... Otherwise, I suggest listening to some Balloon Party music chronicles...

Other than that, check out some song mashups off YouTube and Bandcamp... I mostly just either type a song name/song artist with the word "mashup"/"vs" in it on Youtube or use the "mashup" tag off Bandcamp, but I do have some regulars I listen to like Triple-Q, and <url=https://www.youtube.com/user/nakinyko>nakinyko just to name a few...

Iron Maiden
Maybs some rock and roll (Led Zeppelin, Foreigner, Eagles, Boston, Heart, Peter Frampton, Eric Clapton)
Maybs some Hall and Oates, Spandau Ballet, The Cars, Phil Collins, BB King, James Taylor

Maybs some classical, I came across Ludovico Einaudi on the radio and he has some good relaxing tunes.

If you can handle the vocals or even get into them that is a damn infectious and fun song and band.
Band doesn't need an introduction. Every album of theirs is at the very least good post-1989.
Could be up your alley.

I need some new music too, dang.

Courtney Barnett, Chance Waters, Seth Sentry, The Hilltop Hoods, Peking Duk, Thelma Plum, Hunters and Collectors, John Butler Trio, Art vs Science.

All great artists in their own way.

I went through Goldfrapp's work last night, while writing a paper on West Indian immigration history, I have to say that I appreciate what they are doing - though, ultimately it doesn't work for me. I'm actually in a band (currently recording debut) and we were talking about doing a track very much inspired by 80's synth pop...just, entire albums worth of it is a little too much for me :)

I do however, like I said, appreciate the style, and they appear to be supremely talented.

Thanks for the suggestion!
