I want to be a policeman but everybody tells me it's a stupid idea and that I shouldn't do it especially since I live in México and there's kind of a big mob war going on right now, but after thinking it through and through there is really nothing else I want to do because I really enjoy helping people and I feel that I can make a difference by becoming a policeman, so I wanted to ask you is it really that bad of an idea. (Note that you're answer will not necessarilly change my oppinion of becoming a policeman but I am interested to see waht people think)
Speaking as the resident vocal cop here on the escapist. (I seriously probably mention my occupation on like every 5th or 6th post I make it seems like)
I encourage you to pursue this career if it interests you. Just make sure you do a few things while you pursue it.
1) Stay as physically fit as you can.
It is very much needed especially when you are new because I'm sure in mexico, like the USA, the new guys are the ones that do all the running and jumping.
3) Learn the lay of the land.
Wherever you are going to become a cop spend as much time as you can learning every street's name and what other steets it intersects with and where every business is. It's essential.
4) Practice your fact writing skills.
Supervisors love more than anything a compitant report. If you can learn to write accuratly, only stating the facts not your opinions and in a consice manner you will go far
5) It's a hard and sometimes thankless job
Make sure you remember not everyone, in fact most people you will be dealing with, do not respect the police in any way shape or form and part of your job is to ignore that and show those buttheads respect they don't deserve so maybe, just maybe, they will change their opinion of the police and someday work with you to make a better community
6) Remember, you're not going to save the world just help it
This is what leads to a lot of young rookies to quit or become jerks. I saw how you want to help people, that is good, just don't convince yourself that you can make every situation you go in to come out roses. Sometimes shit just gets away from you or people can't or don't want to be helped. Don't ever convince yourself that these things are your fault.
If you'd like to know anything else PM me or ask here I suppose. I'm more than willing to give you info. I'm a detective and I'm working the night shift right now and haven't had a call for a case since I got here, so I'm just dicking around on the internet.
