If your not frightend about death then go for it. I dunno about mexico, but here the cops get treated like dirt. Don't expect people to listen to you just because you have a gun and a uniform. Also you probally will be put in a life-death situation, so be ready for that.
I am not really afraid of dying but I am however afraid of killing somebody which is the only real doubt I have about becoming a policeman.

I want to be a policeman but everybody tells me it's a stupid idea and that I shouldn't do it especially since I live in México and there's kind of a big mob war going on right now, but after thinking it through and through there is really nothing else I want to do because I really enjoy helping people and I feel that I can make a difference by becoming a policeman, so I wanted to ask you is it really that bad of an idea. (Note that you're answer will not necessarilly change my oppinion of becoming a policeman but I am interested to see waht people think)
Speaking as the resident vocal cop here on the escapist. (I seriously probably mention my occupation on like every 5th or 6th post I make it seems like)
I encourage you to pursue this career if it interests you. Just make sure you do a few things while you pursue it.

1) Stay as physically fit as you can.
It is very much needed especially when you are new because I'm sure in Mexico, like the USA, the new guys are the ones that do all the running and jumping.
3) Learn the lay of the land.
Wherever you are going to become a cop spend as much time as you can learning every street's name and what other streets it intersects with and where every business is. It's essential.
4) Practice your fact writing skills.
Supervisors love more than anything a competent report. If you can learn to write accurately, only stating the facts not your opinions and in a concise manner you will go far
5) Its a hard and sometimes thankless job
Make sure you remember not everyone, in fact most people you will be dealing with, do not respect the police in any way shape or form and part of your job is to ignore that and show those buttheads respect they don't deserve so maybe, just maybe, they will change their opinion of the police and someday work with you to make a better community
6) Remember, you're not going to save the world just help it
This is what leads to a lot of young rookies to quit or become jerks. I saw how you want to help people, that is good, just don't convince yourself that you can make every situation you go in to come out roses. Sometimes shit just gets away from you or people can't or don't want to be helped. Don't ever convince yourself that these things are your fault.

If you'd like to know anything else PM me or ask here I suppose. I'm more than willing to give you info. I'm a detective and I'm working the night shift right now and haven't had a call for a case since I got here, so I'm just dicking around on the internet and catching up on paperwork.

Well, that comes as part of the job. They would probally teach you to use non-leathal takedowns but sometimes you won't have a choice. Maybe think about it a bit more.

Argh! I had so many spelling errors in that post. Must edit!

I see your afraid of your willingness to take a life.
That's actually a GOOD thing. It?s also a very normal feeling. When the time comes where you have to make the decision to take a life there will be more factors then you can know.
You will be trained before you enter the field on when to draw, and how to use, and when to use your weapon.
I doubted I could take a life when I first entered our training academy as I was doing target practice, I doubted I could take a life when I began my patrol, I doubted I could take a life even after I entered our Vice/Gang Unit.
Then the day came where I was in that situation. All the training and practice kicked in and I did what needed to be done to save not only my life but the lives of those around me. I had no choice and I knew it.
I don?t know how common situations where the police need to take a life are in Mexico but I imagine in some places it?s not exactly rare. Where I live the crime rate is pretty typical for a big city in America and we only have ?police shootings? one-three times a year MAYBE. It?s not as common as you think.
The thing is after your academy training you will be more mentally prepared then you are now to do your duty.

That is the problem being a cop in Mexico especially in this times most likely guarantees that I will have to kill somebody and that is why I don't know if I can be a cop.

I'm somewhat amazed by the amount of Mexican people on the Escapist. Forgive my total lack of knowledge of the country, but I don't remember seeing many Mexicans before. The few reports I do get through are usually of the borders, or drunken Tequilla binges.

Could you tell me more about it?
More about the country or more about the kind of people that live in the country?
Bit of both would be nice. Always helps to expand your horizons. :)

Being a police man (or woman) isn't a very easy thing to do, if you actually want to help people.
It's not being a hero, it's enforcing laws... sometimes, that doesn't help people, sometimes, it does.

Just try not to look at people like numbers and you should probably have as few insults as possible.

If you want to help people, but don't really want the life or death situation where you might have to kill someone, have you thought about paramedics?

Okay. But only if you were a loose cannon cop who doesn't play by the rules. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CowboyCop]

Yes. I did link to TV Tropes. See you in a few hours.

Get a degree and become a Detective/Criminologist/Legal Advisor/Financial Crimes/White Collar crimes investigator instead of being a beat cop.
