what the title says. im having trouble liking scottish people right now. im sure (hoping) that there are some really nice scottish people out there. but all of the scottish people ive met online have been racist to every other uk country, sexist, VERY religious and generally not- very nice people. i have met quite a few scottish people aswell. at least 30. the one i was trying to be friends with most introduced me to loads of his scottish friends. one of them was quite literally a nazi, (quoting hitler sometimes and saying if scottland was ever invaded he would imediatley leave and join germany) another would remark about my gaming skills based on the fact that im english and female, (saying things like get back in the kitchen wich would usually offend me). anyway i would like to get to know some nice decent scottish people so my view on scotland isnt based on a handful of unpleasant people.

EDIT: im sorry if this forum offended you i assure you it was not intended. it was probably the way i worded it. i DONT think all scottish people are racist sexist and religious. i was merely describing the few i had the misfortune of meeting. this thread was meant for me to find a way to connect with the scottish people in an attemp to make friends. many of you are nice people who i am pleased to have met. some off you are probably nice but its hard to tell under the insults and hate youve been giving me

Well being from Scotland I can say we do tend to be racist mysoginistic wankers, although saying that the religion has never been a problem for anyone I know and I've never seen a scottish nazi so I guess you were just unlucky.

There are many nice scottish people and once you accept our constant swearing isn't meant to offend then you may get to like some of us. Honestly the problem you seem to have is you met people online and no matter what nationality you are 90% of people online are racist mysoginistic wankers.

Also we do have a national dislike of the english, it's nothing personal and we don't know why it is but considering what happened in Wallace & Bruce's time you can understand. Bad excuse I know but as I've said before we are a nation of wankers.

I knew a great Scottish guy once, he was called William (Like William Wallace.) He doesn't live in Scotland anymore though he still has his thick Scottish accent. He moved to America, Springfield and works in an Elementary School, as a groundskeeper.

I live lived in a town that's got a high amount of Scottish people. There's a lot of Scotland pride, considering half of them have never been to Scotland, but it's just what everyone's like: when they're cold their part of one particular club-house that they never got to live in, they'll pretend it's better than all the other club-houses out there.

Still, there are just as many pricks as there are English people, Irish people, Welsh people, and general people-people. There's just certain qualities such as alcohol-fuelled aggression that just tend to be cultural with some individuals.

EDIT: Forgot where I lived for a moment...

While Scotland does have it's racist bigots, so does every country. Surely, being from England, you know this? Tell me you're not basing your oppinion of an entire country on a few people? Because that's just as ignorant as the people you're describing.

About a year and a half ago I went on vacation with my parents to Scotland. Maybe it's because we were tourists with money (having a fair amount of Scottish blood might have helped too), but most people we ran across were extremely friendly. In fact, we became good friends with the folks who ran a bed-and-breakfast cottage that we stayed at for a few days.

We did notice that there is indeed some anti-English sentiment though. I facepalmed in real life when my dad mentioned that he liked Elizabeth II when talking to a lady at an information booth. He was met with stony silence, and I had to pull him aside and explain to him a bit of the history between England and Scotland. However, many folks we talked to would admit it's not that big of a deal. It's become more of a tradition rather than any actual hatred involved.

You've probably just had some bad luck online. Bear in mind that this is the internet, a realm that attracts an inordinate amount of douchebags. Keep looking, I'm sure you'll find some friendly Scots.

Guys, everyone can be racist wankers, not just Scotland.
But yes, Scotland can be rather imprudent. That said, meeting a nice Scottish person isn't difficult. Go to Scotland, there's plenty of them right from the trainstation/parking lot.

I was born in England but i've lived in Glasgow for the past 8 years with my dad (who's from here)
and i've had alot of first hand experiance of racism on account of my being english, and also witnessed alot of homophobic, mysogonystic and also sectarian acts.
also the stereotype of alcohol abuse in Scotland is pretty much correct, there are literally 6 pubs, 2 churches and 4 schools all within 10 minutes of each other where i live, half of which are catholic and the others are protestant/non-denominational

anyway despite all that there are some nice people, but the majority i wouldnt trust not to smash my face in with a bottle

EDIT: just so there's no confusion, not everywhere is as bad as this, i've spent alot of time in edinburgh and dundee aswell, and edinburgh is nice and touristy and dundee is like a mix of edinburghs niceness and glasgows alcohol/drug problems... so take that as you will

While I don't personally know any Scots, the nation has produced the kickass band Franz Ferdidnand, so they're doing something right.

Well I can tell you that I, and 90% of people I know, don't give a shit where you're from or what's in your trousers. The whole Braveheart We Hate The English thing is a view held by ignorant idiots who live in council estates and have 25 children.

I'm half Scottish but born and raised in England, since half my family is Scottish I have met a lot of Scots.

If you want to badmouth them back just tell them to go back to jerking off to Braveheart, that works pretty well. but yeah, plenty of nice Scottish people out there.

EDIT: If they ask why they'd be jerking off just tell them it'll keep them warm in the dole queue.
lol, thnx for the advice. up until now every time one of them insults me id say "yeah.. well.... your hair is GREEN!!!"

true true, i have been to other places (just made a small edit in my post) but tbh greater glasgow makes up something like 40-50% of the scottish population, so half of scotland and its people are basically glaswegian

anyway there are nice people and there are dicks just like everywhere, just alot of the niceness and dickishness is fueled by alcohol

EDIT: oops apparantly i got my numbers wrong, i thought the greater glasgow area was like 2-2.5millionish but i just done a quick googling and its more like half that, so 20-25% of the population actually are glaswegian

Now, that I resent. Yes, there are a lot of drinkers. Are there more than any other country in the UK? I have real trouble believing it.
