I'm from Perth (Scotland, not Australia xD) and it's a really nice place. I can see how others might misunderstand the Scottish/English rivalry, but nobody I know has real hate for others based on race or religion.

As for Braveheart... I hate that movie because it's resulted in lots of non Scottish people thinking they know all about that period of history when they don't have a clue. I mean, the Battle of Stirling Bridge, without a bridge? Seriously...

I am Scottish, and I think as a country it's a bigger shithole than most. Ned culture is rampant, most towns (especially in Lanarkshire where I live, horrific place) are stuck in the past. They were all involved in industry, and now that all the factories have closed down we are stuck with horrible buildings and run down city centres. If you go up north to Dundee or Inverness, then it is nice, but Lanarkshire and the Glasgow area, are just plain shit. I will be moving to the south of England whenever I can. Oh, and as for meeting nice Scots, like I said, try ANYWHERE but Lanarkshire, Oh god just stay away.

I'm scottish and i think i'm nice enough. In fact i've never met a scottish person described in the initial post. I'm sure they exist though, like in most countries.

But then again, i've lived in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Not Glasgow.

My name is Lewis, I am Scottish as is my family. We are nice people, I myself am a theoretical physicist, my uncle is a biologist who I play dungeons and Dragons with and my Grandad is a charitable accountant, I give to charity, and try to be a nice guy generally. I have lived in England a little now, and before I lived on the outskirts of Glasgow, it is a real shame that some people have been tossers to you and I apologies on Scotland's behalf and hope you meet some nice people in the future :D Oh and to the Nazi, tell him to piss off if he believes in that kind of dictatorship, thank you very much.
Wow, i'm a third year physics student and i play d&d. Nice to meet you.

I'm interested by what you mean when you say the Scottish/English rivalry is misunderstood.

From my own experience, racism and the like is probably the same as you'd get in most countries, sectarianism is bad in the west of Scotland especially, and you'll always find varying degrees of anti-English sentiment wherever you go in the country. There are lots of nice people, and I'm friends with them. But if you have an English accent, you'll generally stumble across more bastards.

I'm quite offended by this, I'm scottish so is virtually everyone I know and we're not a bunch of racist wankers and very few are religious....
I am Scottish and I am not in the slightest bit offended by the statement. The statement itself suggests a definitive level of racism and religious zeal but the reality is the in certain parts of Scotland racism, especially towards the English (most likely because of a massive chip on their shoulder left over from their conquest and shit like the poll tax), is ingrained ay an almost cellular level it is not said or meant as a form of actual attack or with an level of vial or hate but it is said more because it is traditional it is the done thing.

The same theory can be extended to religion which is based more around the single factor of what football team you support, the link between sectarinism and the old firm is something truly unique. A situation where you support a football team based on what school you went to (was it Catholic or not) for most they don't know the history behind the teams the reasons for past violence and hatred but it is seen as the done thing to insult fans of the other team using quite offence anti religious terminology.

So yes I am a Scot, I live just outside Glasgow, My parents are English, I hate football, I don't drink so in effect I've ruled out most of the factors that make a lot of Scots massive massive wankers.

Speaking just for the area I live in and the people I know, most of the anti-English sentiment, if it's there, is just jokes. I know a few English people who live here - and their nationality isn't the subject of mockery.

As for sectarianism Scotland, like Ireland, is recovering from it's deeply religious past. Glasgow, believe it or not, used to be much worse. Both my parents are Glaswegian - one was raised a Catholic, the other a Protestant - and it's definitely getting better. Having more people here from other countries and cultures is making a difference too - the head boy at my school is a Muslim, and a really popular guy.

I know Glasgow used to be much worse. That doesn't mean that it's good now. As for the English thing, I've lived here all my life, and I've had the shit kicked out of me on a number of occasions because of my English accent. But because I was a kid, it was just kids being kids and I had to get on with it. I knew quite a few good folk in the area, and after a few years, the violence stopped. I've just found that even when people are just joking around and that, they don't stop. Some of them keep doing it, but because they're being nice and polite, if you say anything it's just proof that you can't take a joke. Maybe you just notice it more when your always on the other end of the comments. (Not saying you or your friends are like that, just what I've experienced.)

Obviously I can't really comment on your personal experiences, and I know that some people can be pretty cruel. What I'm trying to say is that there isn't much of Scotland left where there is a 'culture' of racial intolerance - not any more than in other parts of the UK. Every country has stories which can be told about it which make it's residents cringe with embarrassment, and I would never play down how unacceptable what you experienced was. I accept that Scots can be intolerant - but I don't like the association of being Scottish with being intolerant.

Stop being so fucking pre-judgemental. So you've met a few Scottish who weren't very nice, you're not being very nice to Scottish people my assuming they're all like that.
Grow up, and learn that nationality's have practically nothing to do with their personality. Unless they're ridiculously patriotic of course, but those are people you should never talk to.

I spent most my life in the countryside but did live with my dad for a few years in Dundee. We're generally nice as long as you don't be rude first (the whole swearing all the time isn't meant to offend you, we can't help it). There isn't that much anti-english sentiment from were i live, mainly anti-annoying tourist.
I have messed around with American tourists' heads a few time but mostly because they referred to Scotch as a race.
