I haven't played MGR yet so I can't comment.

But I feel that MGS4 did indeed pull a "Lost." The explanations were given but they had no weight or were made trivial, which only serves to reinforce that Kojima was tired of the series.

RedFox, don't look at MGR from the story perspective. It really damages it that way. I look at this as just a fun hack n'slash, a MGS spin off.

MGS 1- Was an amazing story relevant to the mapping of the human genome and how maybe it doesn't dictate who we are.

MGS2 - Tried to spin a story relevant to the dawn of the "Age Of Information" and did an okay job.

MGS3 - More of mythos builder. I felt to me it introduced a main character that had very human motivations for what he did and even had internal conflict. The right blend of haminess with 60's spy setting and utilising those times of previous conflict to illustrate how perceptions of an enemy changes.

MGS4 - Tried too hard to tie everything together with some poor choices, should've left you know who dead along with multiple other characters. Also not tried to explain everything away with nanomachines, we didn't need an explanation for Psycho Mantis's powers, we don't need one for arm voice boy.

I remember playing this mini game in Ape Escape 3 which parodies the Metal Gear Solid games. At the time I thought, "Hey, that was kinda fun, I wonder what the actual Metal Gear Solid games are like".

Via a demo disc from a Playstation Magazine, I watched the trailer to MGS3 Subsistence. I was amazed by what I saw and realized how much I wanted it. So, I got it on day 1, and played through the game on Easy. I had an absolute blast with it.

Later on, I got Portable Ops for the PSP. It was a pretty fun game, I liked the idea of recruiting soldiers to play as in the game. Although overall, I feel that Peace Walker improved upon most of it's aspects and I felt had the stronger story.

Not too long after, I got MGS4, which I also had a fun time with even though I didn't really know very many of the characters as I haven't played MGS1 and 2 before hand. Still though, I ended up playing through the game several times just to get a really high rank at the end.

A year and a half ago I think, I downloaded the original MGS via the PSN. It was kinda weird playing it coming in from the more modern MGS titles, but I still had a great time with it.

After that, I bought used copies of MGS2 and 3 from my local used game shop, as I think I sold my Subsistence version of MGS3. (seriously, what the hell were you thinking younger me?!)

MGS2 was good, but I didn't really find it as great as the other games I've played in the series. I do feel that the massive hatred towards Raiden was kinda excessive, but it was understandable at the time, and I came into this game knowing full well what was going to happen.

So after playing through MGS2 and 3 again. I played through 4 once more. The story was a whole lot more sense and was more engaging now that I knew what happened in MGS1 and 2.

So, overall, what was my favorite MGS?

Definitely 3. It was the game that introduced me to the series, and to this day, I felt it had the best story and characters in the series. Plus I loved the camouflage system and having to hunt for food while sneaking your way through the jungle. It also had some of my favorite boss fights in the series.

They were all good games in their own right though.
