Metal Gear Solid blew my mind as a kid.
But i suppose Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence is perhaps the best game in the series, simply because it's story is neat and tidy and the gameplay is just so much fun.
I still love the original too much.

Obviously my favourite character is Snake. He's awesome.

Love the Codec.

The codec is almost a game in itself, especially how contextual it is. How seeing, doing or equipping a certain thing and killing a certain person you can elicit a new insight. And it was such snappy and down right cool dialogue. The cutscenes ran a bit into the melodrama, but Snake's gruff pragmatism always grounded it.

But importantly it was your choice what you wanted to have expanded on. That's the way you flesh things out.

I'm not saying it was perfect, it could have been live rather than in a pause menu, but the fundamentals were the best we've ever had.

And I really miss it from later MGS games, especially MGS4. MGS3 had it fairly well but not quite as good.

Oh and the original score:

Sorry Harry Gregson Williams, I know you were chosen for all the sequels, but Konami own orchestra beat you at your own game. HGW's music may have been fancier but the point was Konami Orchestra captured the feel of Shadow Moses, a mission of nuclear espionage, in a way I haven't felt anywhere else except the Terminator 2 soundtrack.

Another thing I wish I?d known at the time (I had the PC version). I ended up having to fight him [Mantis] each time with bare fists and it always took about half an hour or more. Not a hard fight once you get the pattern down but really longwinded.
Oh? Imma playing the old PC version now and when fighting Mantis, the game assumed I was plugged into the second controller. I beat him in 5 mins (I still remember that pattern very well after all these years.)

But I was disappointed. I was looking forward to a long and gruelling fight where I can?t change controller. Maybe I?m a masochistic like that.

Well I'm only arguing that from idea that it appealed to fans of the series that liked excessive call-backs (though I hated them). Like bringing back Meryl, Naomi, Eva (as Big Momma), ultra-obscure Johnny Sasaki, Mei Ling, and then fucking Big Boss (even though Snake killed him off twice before) just seems like it's trying way too hard to be "HEY SEE THESE CHARACTERS YOU ALL KNEW? THEY ARE TOTALLY THE CHARACTERS FROM BEFORE." I'm even willing to admit that I liked some of it even if I hated the story.
I actually especially dug the return of Eva, and the fact that she surrogated for Les Enfants Terribles. She was the ideal person for the job and I really liked that touch even if her scene was a bit... pretentious? I dunno. But I?m a fan of Meryl, Naomi, Mei, and even Rose so I don?t see the problem there. It just makes sense - they?re a part of Snakes ?crew? like Michael Madsen, Harvey Keitel, and Uma Thurman are to Q Tarantino.

But Big Boss yeah. His revival was a pretty weak twist that pushed it a little too far. He needed to be dead to give the story a little cohesion and substance. That and old plots are subtly undermined. You didn?t mention Psycho Mantis?s ghostly return? I gotta say that was rather eye-rolling and didn?t contribute jack to anything *at all.* I?d say that was the worst, but hey, one of the most popular bosses in VG history ? gotta have him somewhere.

So yeah. Y?know what, I think you?re onto something after all.

Kinda irrelevant, but that dumb scene where [Raiden] tries (and somehow succeeds) to stop the submarine essentially sums up how stupid the game was.
Again, another bad moment and I agree. We know the exoskeleton is very tough but... stopping an Arsenal Gear? Come oooon! But I say the moment was dumb, not the whole game. I still rate 4 higher than 2 and I really like 2.

Lol, The Twin Snakes is one of the best parodies like...ever.
They actually approached Kojima with a faithful version, but he demanded them to do it in their over the top style.
All in all, if you didn't play MGS1, I guess it isn't TOO bad, but if you did, I guess t could be a bit of an annoyance.
I started the mgs series on twin snakes myself and people keep saying how bad it is so I am tempted to play the original but is it still playable after having played the same game with wayyyyy better graphics and wayyyy better controls? I am actually curious not being sarcastic or anything I just can't see how the original can be so much better I keep imagining everyone just exaggerates?

There is nothing on MGS5. Not even a 2 minutes video, it's officially confirmed that MGS: GZ is the prologue to MGSV. Which is in turn, a sequel to Peace Walker. Taking a week-10 days after.
Isn't it heavily suspected that that phantom pain mgs 5? I head a bunch of articles point by point breaking down the whole trailer explaining how it is mgs 5

I love MGS1 and 2. And I honestly don't get the appeal of the 3rd game, but I haven't finished it yet. I really don't get why people always hammer the 4th game for unbearably long cut scenes and it almost never gets mentioned about the third game. I think there is a solid 40 minutes between starting the game and actually getting control of Snake.

My only experience with Metal Gear Solid is with the games on the HD collection, but I sort of get the gist of the series. I haven't played Peace Walker yet and found MGS2 to be lacking, but MGS3 is one of my favourite games of all time and feels like it just gets everything right. The stealth, the drama, the funny codec calls, the long-winded cutscenes, the silly boss battles. I really hope they decide to bring MGS1 and MGS4 out on 360 at some point so I can play the whole series. It's doubtful that will happen with the latter though since it's such a technical monster.

I am annoyed that the HD re-release scrapped some of the original MGS3s extra features like the secret theatre, the nightmare easter-egg and the boss rush.

I've always enjoyed the fact that the Metal Gear storyline is more complex than theoretical physics, and even Hideo Kojima doesn't know what's going on anymore.
Also; NANOMACHINES

Twin Snakes has way better graphics, but the controls in the original are still incredibly tight and responsive to this day. Twin Snakes really isn't any better in this respect and might actually be slightly worse.

MGS1 is a bit harder, largely because you can't shoot in first-person (except in the finale). I always felt like that feature broke Twin Snakes because the game just wasn't designed for it. It turned the Ocelot fight, in particular, into a complete joke.

The main reason people don't like Twin Snakes, though, are the changes to the cutscenes. While still ridiculous, MGS 1 is definitely much more grounded. There's no kick-flipping off of rockets in that game.

It was unfortunately necessary, I think. IIRC, the version in the HD collection is a port of Subsistence which took up 3 DVDs on the PS2.

MGS 3 is probably my favourite, and some of the best moments for me include climbing up the ladder while Snake Eater is being sung and fighting the Sorrow. Even though I still enjoyed MGS 4, I can't help but be reminded of this whenever somebody mentions:

You know the cave with the dogs in it? Yeah, screw that place.
It doesn?t help you have to go through that place about four times. Pain in the arse. It took until maybe my third play through to realise if you equip that handkerchief, the wolfs don?t attack you.
This might have been posted already but; did you know that when you are standing in front of the door leading to sniper wolf's first appearance if you hit meryll and then quickly equip a box one of the dogs will pee on the box and the dogs won't attack you when you are in the box.

Well what can i say. MGS is probably my favorite series ever. MGS1 was awesome in its time with a great story and gameplay. Though i will have to be honest, i don't think nowadays i could bare a shooter like it that doesn't allow 1st person mode shooting mode.

MGS2 was probably one massive troll but i love it for it as well. I mean making us play as Raiden in the Big shell chapter was troll 1 and than the biggest troll is probably the story that went completely bonkers at the end. Just think about it, everything was done to find the patriots however everything was also orchestrated by the patriots as a training mission. And than to be sure we were all trolled we were told those same patriots were long dead. That last convo between snake and otacon could have just as well been "trololololo".

MGS3 was gameplay wise probably the best. Great mix between survival, stealth and action. And the story was awesome as well. It made us understand the pain of Big Boss and the Boss was probably the best "villain" ever. (mainly because she actually wasn't a villain)

And MGS4 was in my humble opinion the best way to end the MGS storyline. Some people may hate the absurd amount of cutscenes but is there really any better way to end a game notorious for its amount of codec convos and cutscenes than having a finale with even more of them? And most of those cutscenes were quite awesome anyway.
Only disappointment was the gameplay. Sure the fact you could pick up all the weapons which the enemy dropped was cool but it also made the game much easier to shoot through. Stealth almost became optional.

I watched my friend beat MGS4. I thought the fights against the B&B Corp were awesome (and depressing), and the Raiden vs Vamp final duel was wicked as hell.
The B&Bs were interesting characters. I kinda wish they had more personality, but all the fights were good fun and I thought their abilities and the stories of PTSD were all interesting.

But my favorite moment of all was Johnny and Meryl's moment during the final assault. I want my GF to propose like that. IT WAS AWESOME. Probably one of my 5 favorite moments in all of gaming.
That?s really sweet. I think a lot of us were surprised with that twist.

Lol yes. It?s been discussed quite a lot.

I wouldn't totally agree, I LOVE the music in MGS2, but that's mostly the theme.

Then again, it was MGS1 that gave us the Game Over "DUN DUN DA DUN DUN, DUN DUN DUN!"

And that is the absolute classic.

Actually the Shagohod does howl when it falls into the river ;P.

I was recently spoiled for the final boss/main villain of Metal Gear Rising, but originally I had thought given that all the main villains are cyborgs and he was being kept in 'stasis' the same way as Big Boss, that Solidus would be the surprise orchestrator behind whatever's going on in that game and have much more extensive/powerful body armour than in MGS2. He does have the connection to Raiden after all.

'It's been a while... Jack.'

Better idea than Armstrong?

Alrighty. I went through the whole game in its head bobbing glory. I still fucked up against Liquid in the end, and I?d done well not to die until that point. FFS. The FMVs were fucked up as well, and for some reason my game has the horrible habit of playing the alert music when fighting bosses rather than ?Duel.? I fucking love the piece of music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJqLQkODKnk

Hell with it. Let?s have a look at the bosses.

Ocelot
I really like this fight. Very simple stuff. I remember back in the day I was the first to accidentally find out Campell calls you an idiot if you detonate the C4. Yay me.

M1 Tank
I don?t like this fight. Chucking grenades. Bah.

Cyborg Ninja/Liquid
But I really like the runny roundy punchy kicky. Learning what your enemy will do etc. It?s good stuff but the control is a little stiff and awkward. Snake?s only really good at 45 degree angles.

Mantis
Yeah there?s a reason he?s one of the most beloved bosses in videogame history. It?s a shame I can?t do it legit over the PC. It?s good feeling when you gain that petty victory.

Sniper Wolf (Both)
There?s good variety in these bosses actually. I love the sniping and I try not to use the diazepam to make it a more tense challenge. But is it me, or is the first fight with Wolf much harder than the second?

Hind/Metal Gear
Boring stay outta sight fights and unless you get reckless thanks to boredom, you won?t get hit. I don?t like these fights.

Raven
But this one is really good. Cat and mouse run around. Good stuffs.
