Umm...Raiden was not the selling point. Nobody actually know about Raiden before release, it was all an elaborate marketing campaign by Kojima, a very stupid one.
''Play as Solid Snake11!!11''
And what we were given was Raiden, a protagonist i'm not a very big fan off. MGS2 is probably one of my least favorites IMO.

The first time you encounter Revolver Ocelot. Pretty much my favourite character in the series.

"Right. Touch that wire, and the C4 will blow up, along with the old man! ... So you're the one the Boss keeps talking about..."

He is the very definition of a moustache-twirling villian.
Have you ever read the Last Days of Foxhound? Its completely taken over how I imagine the character now. A man so gifted at backstabbing that he can't tie his own shoelaces without doublecrossing them twice.

A man so devious that he ultimately, canonically and actually conned and betrayed himself to get what he wanted.

I think he means Metal Gear Solid 1, considering he put ''first'' in speech marks.
Actually, solid does refer to ''3'', and to multiple things.
1. Solid 3D graphics
2. Solid Snake.
3. Solid standing for cubed, or 3.

Damn that dark cave in MGS3 to hell. I think I spent 2 hours in there.
I'm excited for GZ. Mostly because it's building upon PW, which I loved. Most of PW's short comings were system limitations.

My favorite? hmm...
Either MGS3/MGS:pW.

And oh, Portable Ops, canon or not?
Portable Ops is Canon. Not Portable Ops +, though. I haven't had a chance to play PeaceWalker, is it any good? MGS3 is definitely my favorite of the series, so more Big Boss makes me happy. However I have been stuck trying to finish other games like MGS4 (Going for all the Trophies, same with MGS2).

Also, is MGS5 == MGS Ground Zeroes? I am confused on that part.
No MGS5 and Ground Zeroes are two different games. Ground Zeroes is more big boss taking place after PeaceWalker and MGS5 we know extremely little about other then a single 2 min video.

As for PeaceWalker I would say its tied for my favourite MGS game. If it wasn't for the limitations caused by it being a psp game it would be by far my favorite one.

1. That adds to the difficulty of stealth. Where there even footsteps in MGS1?
Yes there was and you even left foot prints in the snow that guards would notice and follow.

or the 3rd installment?
He said Metal Gear Solid in the title so that should rule out the Metal Gear games.

Fun fact: Solid Snake was based on equal parts Jean-Claude Van Damme and...Christopher Walken.

There is nothing on MGS5. Not even a 2 minutes video, it's officially confirmed that MGS: GZ is the prologue to MGSV. Which is in turn, a sequel to Peace Walker. Taking a week-10 days after.

There is also a little trick for getting through once you reach Meryl. If you punch Meryl and duck inside of your box right away, the little dog following her will pee on it, and you can pass through the cave easily as long as you use that box.
Haha. Yeah. Memories for sure. I?m actually talking about that bit right now. Not really what I had in mind for the thread, but, lol.

Yeah, but you only get the handkerchief after you've been caught. Meaning you still need to travel through the wolf area twice without it when going back for the sniper rifle.
Ah yeah. I suppose it?s been longer than I thought. You only get the ?chief in the cell next to the torture room. I?ll bear that in mind.

Also, having played it again recently, that fist fight with Liquid at the end is hard as balls. I don't remember having that much trouble with it back in the day.
I?ve not made it Liquid yet, but oddly enough I do remember the last time I played through I actually had this problem. Took a good few attempts, yet I clearly remember the first time I ever played I was proud I beat him on my first try. The hell?

I reckon in my old age I?ve become better at sneaking (Mantis even says so) but lost my reckless ?oomph.? Let?s hope I can beat Liquid on my first go this time around.

Never actually played MGS, but I have played 2 and 3. The first half of 2 was good, but then the plot takes an express route to crazy town through the most confusing and stupid plot twists I have ever seen.

The problem with MGS2 is the message overturned the plot. All they wanted to do is getting a theme/idea across, without actually making sense. Sure, it's all fine and dandy to have a message in your games, if not encouraged, but I must be able to play the game and it's story without needing the message.

Also, am I the only one who found MGS4 a bit too fan serviced?
And also,
Zero being made the main antagonist of the ENTIRE series without much interaction beforehand?
Not at all. MSG4 felt really good the first time as I got all the "in jokes" and stuff but actually when I replayed it and thought about the whole experience more it felt seriously lacking.

Also nobody told me to do the controller port switch the first time I fought psycho mantis and I spent about an hour dodging his attacks and using all my rations up. I managed to get about 2/3 of his life down before he killed me and I found myself seriously pissed off. Then the next time I wander in an immediately get told about it. It was both awesome and frustrating at the same time.
I loved mgs4's story to be honest but I think it had a nostalgic feel for me since I played twin snakes a half dozen times when it fist came out.

Also if you think that is bad with mantis the first time I played twin snakes I had rented it from blockbuster so naturally when they said look at the back of the box it went wayyyyyyyyyyy over my head. I ended up giving up and returning the game and I am lucky I bought it cheap to give it a second chance.

It doesn?t help you have to go through that place about four times. Pain in the arse. It took until maybe my third play through to realise if you equip that handkerchief, the wolfs don?t attack you.
Never heard about that before, wish I?d known.

My favorite moment was when I landed a few hits on Psycho Mantis without swapping controllers. It wasn't a serious effort to beat him, I just wanted to see if I could.
I still remember the first time I ever fought him. It took forever then I died. I was cheesed, but Campel told me to switch controllers and it was easy. I try and do it ?legit? every time now just because it feels good when I best him!
Another thing I wish I?d known at the time (I had the PC version). I ended up having to fight him each time with bare fists and it always took about half an hour or more. Not a hard fight once you get the pattern down but really longwinded.

Well I strongly disagree with this. Why use a term that?s already being used? That?s confusing. Let?s call it ?excessive call backs,? not fan service.
Well I'm only arguing that from idea that it appealed to fans of the series that liked excessive call-backs (though I hated them).

Like bringing back Meryl, Naomi, Eva (as Big Momma), ultra-obscure Johnny Sasaki, Mei Ling, and then fucking Big Boss (even though Snake killed him off twice before) just seems like it's trying way too hard to be "HEY SEE THESE CHARACTERS YOU ALL KNEW? THEY ARE TOTALLY THE CHARACTERS FROM BEFORE."

I'm even willing to admit that I liked some of it even if I hated the story.

darkfox85 said:
I agree. Although I?m also not the biggest fan, I do think Raiden got it way too harsh. I actually prefer the MGS2 version from the MGS4 reinvention. MGS4 saw him being even an even whinier character and generally just a difficult and irrational person.
Yeah, despite making him cool, they completely ruined his character arc from MGS2 (not to mention Snake's) in order to create drama.

Kinda irrelevant, but that dumb scene where he tries (and somehow succeeds) to stop the submarine essentially sums up how stupid the game was.

darkfox85 said:
And yeah I heard that was the reason they introduced Raiden. I wonder how that fan reacted to playing as that ?old man? in MGS4. XD
Haha, I was thinking the exact same thing as I typed that out.

One interesting debate I got into once was the prowess of the Shagohod in MGS3 compared to the Metal Gears that came after it. While Granin and most of the people I talked to considered the Metal Gears superior, after seeing the Shagohod in action I wasn't sure. It was considerably faster than any Gear in the series, even the Gekkos, and was able to function fine as a war vehicle to defend itself even after losing the nuke-launching components in the rear half.

Someone then told me that the Metal Gears, being bipedal instead of treaded, have better mobility on rough terrain and could always dodge incoming nukes as well as fire back from anywhere in the world, but I still wasn't convinced; if you got a warning it would be easy for either one to get out of the way, and again the Shagohod can do it faster. A small flat stretch of land isn't exactly rare even in countries without roads, and good luck lifting your average Metal Gear with helicopters as was done with the Shagohod. So which do you consider the superior nuclear death-mobile?
i am deeply in the "Rex is the best Metal Gear ever" camp, because every single one after that was build as part of a series and by videogame logic that makes it inferior and it everyone before it is technologically inferior.
Shagohod has the Problem that it needs a quite the straight road to gather speed in order to fire its missiles, Rex just turns its head and BOOM, instant nuke. I am also not sure if Shagohods missiles are undetectable(Rexs missiles are).
though i have to agree that Rex is kinda shitty to transport, MGRays are build to be housed in certain ships and can swim quite fast but i guess the fastest Rex can go is a mild jog.

I hated the torture sequences because I'm not good at rapid button mashing and I never beat Peace Walker because of the torture sequence.
i only beat that part because i put my PSP on my desk, fixed between two large books and used the tip of a pen to rapidly press the button(kinda flicking it over the button). When my friend told me this works i thought he was kidding me but it really does.

can the Shagohod howl?
yea, didn't think so
Metal Gear - 1
Shagohod - 0

OT: as much as I love the shit out of the mainstream ones (still trying to properly play Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, since my Subsistence disk died)
I personally think Ghost Babel was amazing, despite that I never beat it because I needed the monies and thus had to sell the GBC and the game

say, are the PSP ones available to play on PS3? no $ to buy a PSP =P
