I would be more interested in first person shooters if they looked like this.

I too am tired of brown and grey, but I don't want my game to look like Linda Blair ate Skittles. Can we find some sort of happy medium? Even in a concrete city there is color.

SO BROWN AND GREY.

MY GOD, LOOK AT ALL THE BROWN!!!!

UGH, IT'S LIKE THEY DON'T USE ANY COLORS AT ALL, GUYS!!!!

NO COLOR HERE!

NOPE, NONE HERE EITHER GUYS!

MY GOD, WHEN ARE DEVELOPERS GOING TO START USING COLORS!?!?!?!

All I see is BROWN AND GREY, GUYS!!

God. NO. COLORS. AT. ALL!!!!

Man, it's like they use a MONOCHROME PALETTE!

Oh man, gold filter means it's ALL ONE COLOR!

Nope, ABSOLUTELY NO COLOR to be had here!

God save you if you open all of that up, you've been fairly warned.

EDIT: To actually contribute to the discussion at hand, I'm sick of people whining about everything being "brown and grey". It's the phrase itself that bugs me, because people don't usually actually MEAN "brown and grey", they mean "it has an aesthetic that doesn't appeal to me because everything is washed out" or something like that. And people have just boiled it down to complaining that every single game is just one damn color, which is not true at all.

EDIT The Second:
Also, I would never play a first-person shooter again if they all looked like that. It hurts my eyes to look at those after a few minutes, I can't even imagine trying to play it. The gaming industry has moved on from 8-bit graphics, and for a pretty good reason. I can't argue that focusing less on graphics would be bad for the industry, because it would promote better writing and level design again, but as a gamer who grew up with the Sega Genesis and never got an NES, 8-bit graphics are just a bit too dated for widespread use. How is the single-or-dual-palette-with-a-separate-palette-for-enemies look any better than any of the pictures I've linked above?

While I understand that games these days lack the aesthetic appeal the older generation had, I can't help but to wonder why people would rather have flat 2D sprites over a colorful and bombastic 3D model if said game was meant to be played in 3D rather than a sidescrolling game.

Other than that, I don't really care whether or not a color pallet in a game goes beyond light grey as long as I can tell what the hell I'm doing. Mad World made the mistake of having a game with only three colors, making it impossible to tell what you were doing unless you were looking at the screen hard enough. That's a game you should be scolding for coloring, not FPS games where you can tell what you're shooting at.

It's not that I don't think the market is over saturated with first person shooters, I just get sick of hearing about how they don't have any color in them. It's not the coloring that needs to be fixed, it's the over reliance on the genre.

You sir, are a god among men.

I really dont know what to add to this apart from what this guy said, uh those Megaman FPS's look pretty cool I guess, but I doubt I'd be able to play them due to the fact that they wuold probably destroy my retinas

It's not so much a problem with the 8-bit aesthetic - the real problem is that those Mega Man tile graphics were designed to be used sparingly, alongside a wide variety of other tiles, not splattered across gigantic polygons and tiled ad nauseam. It also doesn't help that the colors they used are actually somewhat more saturated than what the NES actually outputs, and it's just galling to see Mega Man background tiles in an environment that consists almost entire of right angles when the original artists went to such effort to create a world far more complex.

It is definitely possible to create a good-looking FPS with an 8-bit aesthetic, but not like this - not by apishly fetishizing just surface details.

Duke Nukem
I feel sick to my stomach just hearing the mention of that game.

If these recommendations are being directed at me, well, y'all don't know me very well, do ye?

Duke isn't meant to be serious so don't take it as such.
There is not a single possible way I could take Duke Nukem that wouldn't disgust me. Serious or silly, it grosses me out. Politics? I want to have fun. I won't have fun playing a game I hate every single solitary thing about with a passion.

Eh, sorry, there aren't any recommendations in this thread that would break me away from my dislike of first person shooters. In fact, the recommendations are reminding me of why I don't much like first person shooters and would rather be playing something like Mushihimesama. Wishing that scrolling shooters never lost out in popularity to the first person shooter.

If these sort of suggestions impressed me, well, first person shooters wouldn't be my least favourite genre of video game. No offense.

nope. I hate this 'retro for the sake of retro' thing that's showing up recently. games would not have advanced like this if there wasn't a benefit built-in. Look at resistance 2: that was colourful as all hell, and it was also realistic.

I guarantee that in 20 years or so, after the realistic shooter bubble has burst, gamers will be clamouring for games that return to washed out middle-eastern ruined cities, because that's what they grew up with. this is all that this is.

WHAT??

You are telling me you don't like paying women to expose themselves then killing them?

What a world we live in...

Have you tried Deus Ex, admittedly it isn't an FPS as it's more of a hybrid of multiple genres but it's good.
I know the world "troll" is forbidden here, I'll refrain from ever uttering its name again. But people are clearly messing with me.

Nevermind, I shouldn't have implied I could ever reconcile the genre at all. It has become a pandora's box for recommending crap I hate. Possibly intentionally.

Well I can't really tell if it's the mayhem you look for or just the theme of something irregular.

But I must suggest you check out Serious Sam, contrary to what the name might suggest silly mayhem is their calling card.

Yeah, but when an FPS is good, boy is it good!
Kind of like asian women.
Fun fact; Human eyes have a slight blue filter on them which goes to a slight brown tint as they get older.
What I'm saying is, any other colour would most likely look unrealistic & shit in a "real life" context.
The more you know....

Well if you're gonna act like that when people actually reccomend games, people probably are going to start trolling you. Because before now they weren't.

Yeah, looking at the crap you posted I don't think the genre wants anything to do with you either.
If a guy anything like Duke Nukem exists, I do hope he doesn't want to have anything to do with me.

And on that note I'm going to attempt to abandon thread!
