I would be more interested in first person shooters if they looked like this.

Get out of your retro buble and enjoy things for what they are, not for what they are associated to.
If it is okay for people to "shallowly" shun anime games because they somehow manage to find that "ugly".

Then there is nothing wrong with my preferences here. I think that Quake and Duke Nukem are ugly games.

Funny, I was taught a lesson here about the importance of gameplay. And how not important it is. Do you disagree with that. Tell me, is it only gameplay that matters? Or do aesthetics matter, too? Are people not allowed to enjoy, enjoyable mental associations and aesthetics? After a recent thread that I made, I thought it was okay to be shallow about video games.

Would you still play it even if it didn't have that "retro for the sake of retro" look to it?
No, not really. I never gave the original game a second look until I heard this existed.

Of course, I did wind up playing Doom, Quake, and even Hexen as a kid. But that was because that was a particular situation I was in as a kid in which I didn't have any other choice. I was at a relative's house as a game addicted kid, and they didn't have any other games.

Ok,

well, why don't you go do that?
I'd also rather talk about them.

I like to talk about the games I like when I'm not playing them.

It should also be okay to make threads related to my tastes, such as praising a Megaman mod for a first person shooter game.

First of all: I am not a fan of anime (that doesnt mean that I blindly dont like anime and bash on it).

Second: The anime style can look good in games, just take a look at those Naruto games, that game, "Tales of Vesperia" or something, has good character models (the maps are more on the lazy side though), etc...

Third: Everything matters in a game, gameplay, visuals, sound, etc... you are the one who doesnt play a full genre just because they dont look a certain way, and yet you are willing to play the one game that fits your visual preferences (even though the gameplay is the same as a shitload other games that you dismissed).

I really hate when people say I hate it because its anime (and for that matter everyone that doesnt like it), the reason why I dont like it is because it looks bad, RetroBlazer is a good example of that kind of game looking good but what you showed is just ugly.

Does the old Megaman games ever look like this?

There is a reason why the game is 2D, those kind of textures dont work with depth (look at the ground and the corners). The textures kind of work when the player is perpendicular with her but even then there is a very big clash of colours.
Here is a good example of a good colour palette

I know that you dont like Duke and Doom but take a look at these images

Duke Nukem does look uglier then Doom, even then notice how smooth the ground looks, those textures where made so that they dont look bad when they are all mashed together far away (avoiding contrasting pixels inside the same texture file).

In other words,

It looks awesome. I don't see how some of y'all can not like it.:p

I absolutely love the way that mod or whatever looks.

*shrug* Different taste. Obviously some people do like it.

Sadly that reflects terribly on you because the Mod you are praising looks like shit. Not to mention that you haven't apologized for wishing death on me.

Why yes, I am indeed a tower of strength, thanks for pointing that out Solve Media.
Honestly? Leave her alone, she might have a different taste than yours and she might be stubborn about it though it doesn't give you the rights to mock her.
Just let her and the rest debate about this maturely.

Get lost White Knight.
You really shouldn't use that kind of talk, considering you're close to get banned.

You might not want to bring that up, considering that precisely that has gotten others Infractions as of late. Lilith is a big girl, she can defend herself White Knight.
Why not let her decide? She's the victim here, isn't she?

No I'm... not. You should have seen the other thread, the one entitled "are most Western gamers really so shallow as to refuse a game because it has anime designs". And I made a big deal and gameplay and nobody liked that and I learned a lesson. Or more like I unlearned a lesson for like the fifth or sixth time.

Most people's response was saying they don't play anything that is remotely anime looking and throwing insults at me and anime for challenging that.

I don't actually refuse all first person shooters, they're just my least favourite genre and thus I tend to like to focus on genres I like more since there are thousands of games I haven't even played in the genres I do like. And I have a variety of reasons I'm not super fond of First Person Shooters. Largely it is because I don't like the feel of the mechanics and it is almost like an uncanny valley experience most of the time. Kind of like what Extra Credits said about Kinect. When I look around, there's no peripheral vision. When I jump, it doesn't feel like I'm jumping, even less so than some 2D game. There's this weird disconnect from being close to real but not close enough. It's like some kind of weird double vision thing. Makes me feel claustrophobic in a way, and in general just doesn't seem like a good experience. I like to experience video games as if they were an interactive movie, not some weird double vision. Among the first person shooters that have been of greater interest to me, without mods of any kind, are Portal, Mirror's Edge, and Bioshock.

And I didn't wish death upon anyone. Hookah has been way too assuming this entire thread.

I don't know if I would call myself a victim. But my threads do seem to rustle a lot of jimmies it would seem. And things get, err, heated. Mostly directed at me.

Anyone play Max Payne 3? That looked quite vibrant and had plenty of colour in places... It's not silly colour like mega man but its not dull either... Personally I think its the best kind of aesthetic...

Of course, I've been trying to avoid responding to and feeding you altogether. And pretending you don't exist because any conversation with you is clearly futile and not constructive.

You know what, you can think whatever you like about me or think whatever you like about what I think. I don't want to respond to you anymore. Ever. And would appreciate it if you would do the same for me.

Well then don't bother with mega man deathmatch. If FPS don't entertain you, then the same game with a different paint job isn't going to do it. It just means that FPS isn't your style, and thats fine, but it doesn't mean that all FPS are low quality drivel. RTS games aren't my style, but that doesn't mean I think games like Supreme Commander and Tiberian Sun are crap.

I agree that recent FPS games have failed to impress, but the problem is less about a lack of colour and more a lack of imagination, particularly in the weapons and guns.

In just about every shooter I have played, no matter, how colourful the environment, you can guarentee you'll be using a pistol, machine gun and shotgun. There's a very good chance a rocket launcher and sniper rifle will show up, and perhaps a cool but useless gimmick weapon thrown in for good measure.

As for enemies, they'll almost certainly be human, or at least humanoid. They'll mostly use machine guns, but they might have some special units:
>A guy with an explosive attack.
>A heavily armored guy.
>A sniper (who telegraphs his location with a red laser beam)
>A guy with a jetpack. He spirals out of control and explodes when you kill him.
>A guy on a turret (which you will inevitably turn against his comrades)
>A lightly armored asassin guy, who uses melee attacks and moves like greased lightning.
>A crazy guy armed who charges at you and explodes.
>A swarm of weak guys, who will attempt to overwhelm you via weight of numbers.

And before I forget, your character is always either part of a military unit (maybe a SPACE military unit if you're lucky), or a lone dude who is either mute or overflowing with cheesy one-liners.
