Instead of focusing on tool-making, early man devoted his time to agriculture. They caught on to genetics much earlier from more involved animal husbandry, and would rather grow things than build them. Would have been slower developing, but an overall much more sustainable civilization. Gold would never have become valuable and economies might never have come about. Over time, and with artificial lifeforms escaping into the wild, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the natural and the artificial.
