What if our gender roles had remained (at least slightly) more balanced, as it was with the older, more naturally inclined religions. We've been treating women really shitty for a really long time, so what if we'd learned to reel in our dicks a mite sooner?

To OP: You might want to check out a few books by Harry Turtledove, he apparently specializes in alternate history. I haven't read any myself, but they look good though.
Every single European sailor and ship that landed in the Americas was butchered and burned by the natives, negating all cultural influence they might have had. I honestly can't really think of a bigger blow to world history as that.

How about if humans never got the idea for farming. Civilization as we know it would have never been.
what if the very first single cell took an extra second before it duplicated? what if hilary got the democrats nomination? what if the romanovs were never overthrown? What if cannibalism was ok/common (soylent green)? Africa had more resources and access to more technology (from dawn of man)?

A posibly stable pagan roman rebublic?

A massive european/gulf/african divide between paganism/judaism and islam.
If that doent grab your fancey how about when franklin made his discoveries about electricity - or runtgen made his discoveries about radiation. Both are critical to our level of technology today.
