Yeah because we really want to mix driving with drinking. I've never met a 16 year old who knows how to drink properly (sensibly without passing out), myself included. Honestly I'm 18 now (the legal age in Australia) and looking back 16 is way to young for a legal drinking age. Sure kids will get it anyway, but it's not like the have 100% access to it.
Meet me, I don't over do it.. I just have a few JD and cokes and I'm still the person picking up the drunk girl off the floor when they fall down.

for the US, 18. You are considered an adult by the state at 18, you can drive, fight in the military, become a independent and be prosecuted as an adult. Its utterly senseless that they say you guys have to wait till 21 to be able to drink.

I think it would be pretty bad to see a couple of 11 year olds, staggering through town, drunk off their heads. It's fine where it is.

I don't think there should be an age limit, no seriously. Obviously one generation would be COMPLETELY fucked, but after that everyone would calm down and drinking wouldn't be a big tabboo so it wouldn't be seen as so rebelious and exciting for you people.

I kinda want them to lower it to 15 or so like european countries where their kids learn about it at a younger age and so don't go crazy(coupled with strict DUI laws over there).

But then I though, why not raise it? Make the legal drinking age to be 30. Then we'll have a rash of underage binging by all the idiot kids, while those that have brain cells live on. We'd be able to put a substantial dent in the idiot, not-worthwhile person population.

I LIKE that idea. Make all drugs legal too, then we'll REALLY kill off all the idiots.

18 as well.

Come on America, there is no point in having a 21 limit if no one follows it nor even considers it a sensible limit. That just drives drinking "underground" where it is unregulated and uncontrolled which directly puts lives at risk.

It also sets a terrible precedent, teaching a whole generation to wilfully and repeatedly break the law and be put in a situation fearful to confide in the police when they should really have no hesitation, eg;
"This girl got beat-up/raped/robbed/whatever, but I better not call the police or all my friends will get busted for drinking underage"

Though some drunks are so annoyingly stupid I almost consider completely banning the stuff, but probably not worth the effort.

The problem isn't just that 1 rule, it's the whole system around it.
First of all, if people want to do something they're going to do it, legal or not.
Second, the real problem isn't alcohol, it's the people drinking it. for example when i drink first make sure i can spend the night at that friends house (i don't drink at bars) and even drunk off my ass i know enough not to drive.
Third, to everyone saying that people at __ age aren't mature enough to drink, that is true for most people of any age.

I've said this many times before, and I'll say it again. There's no set age for when everyone reaches a high enough level of maturity to drink and, unfortunately, there is no test to find out just how mature a person is.
I like Germany's system, if only for drunk driving and not drinking itself. The drinking age is relatively low, but if you get caught drunk driving, your license gets taken away. Forever. Permanently.

Here in the UK you can drink in private from the age of five, buy alcohol with a meal at 16 and gain full drinking privileges at 18, which I think is fine. The trouble with denying people alcohol until an advanced age, as the US does, is that it creates a "forbidden fruit" syndrome. Being denied alcohol for so long merely encourages kids to go crazy when they finally do gain access to it, having no experience of drinking and no idea of what their limits are.

I've been drinking wine and beer since I was pretty young, and I think I'm probably a more responsible drinker than most people my age. The idea of being able to join the military, drive and vote without being able to buy a pint is absurd.

I don't like the age limit. It turns drinking into some forbidden fruit that leads dumb kids to do dumb shit.

I think it should be 16 or so provided we get some real mass transportation in this country. I shudder to think about dumbass 16 year olds driving drunk (or anybody for that matter).

On one hand, I do see it as odd that the general age of majority for most things is 18, with the one exception of alcohol, which is 21. It makes you wonder exactly why it's felt that difference is necessary.

On the other hand.. who the fuck cares? Wasting mental bandwidth over something so stupid and trivial as the goddamn legal drinking age is retarded.
