"If a game can't stand on single player alone, it's a bad game." Really?

I see the main problem with Multiplayer being Yahtzee's other quote about joining an online game being like 'walking into an aviary full of nitrous oxide and trying to play scrabble with the cuckoburoos while they fuck your mum'
Ie: Multiplayer communities on Xbox Live (the most likely place to find multiplayer-focused games) are some of the most anti-social things ever. Therefore, no matter how good the multiplayer is technically, many will still hate it due to what comes with the experience.

I never play multiplayer anymore. It's populated by annoying children and irritating adults... in otherwords aggrivating people. Plus the servers in this country are shit. Also I grew up in the days when multiplayer simply was an added bonus to the singleplayer.

That's a legitimate complaint, but it's rather console centric. On a PC game, anybody doing that kind of thing on a server not made for douchebags by douchebags would get kicked pretty darned quickly, if not banned outright. I can count the number of times I've run into that kind of troll while playing online on the fingers of one hand, and I've been playing online multiplayer since 2002.

Of course there is always the PC....

OT:If a game has a single player campaign it ought to be up to a certain standard, if the game is really just about the multiplayer then it should be sold as such rather than hiding behind a weedy single player to tempt in those who don't like to play online.

Yep, i've been playing PC multiplayer games since 2000 ish and although I know there have probably been 100 incidents in that time it really isn't common and is dealt with quickly with kick/ban. If there is no vote kick then you simply make sure that you play on a moderated server, any decent clan server with at least 1 admin online will not tolerate even the slightest hint of trolling.

Eh, for me personally I have to agree with Yahtzee. I mostly only play single-player games and if it has multiplayer too, then I don't really mind but for the game to be atleast good for me the single-player has to be decent.

IF the game has a singleplayer, then it my books it must stand on that alone. This is because if its not that good, its wasting memory space that might as well contribute to the multiplayer

Its also good to have a single version of a mulitplayer pnly game, like left 4 dead

EDIT: I tend to get more dragged into mulitplayer. I seem to lose track of time pushing my team to that final control point etc.

With single player I hardly ever get that feeling. I enjoy playing them, but Im never fully immersed into them, possibly because of the silent areas and AI patterns

I'm with Yahtzee on this one. If it's really good, I'll play thru a single player campaign multiple times. After a time or two on each setting, with each map, even really good multiplayer is boring. Sneaking up on the same 8 to 10 dudes all trying to sniper each other, yawn. MP'ers should really learn the value of the shotgun. Oh, and no typing or talking allowed when I play. It's ignore/mute all the way, I play videogames to get away from people, not interact with them.

Battlefield 2.

That's basically it.

Instead of writing a dull speech about how Yahtzee's incorrect in saying that every game should stand on its singleplayer, but I'm not going to.

I'll just say "Battlefield 2" and leave.
I don't understand...battlefield 2 was a fucking awful game...both single player and multi-player.

Multiplayer is king.
I say this because I am a huge fighter fan, and I like to fight other people rather than the computer all the time.
Do I play single player games? Yes. There are plenty.
But I usually buy games for the multiplayer offered.

Yahtzee said Team Fortress was OK, and so are Multiplayer exclusive games (Unless they suck at multiplayer, too), but if a game has a good Multiplayer and a bad Story, is it not just as bad as the F.E.A.R and Bioshock 2 examples you gave?

So... basically, you're upset that someone doesn't agree with your opinion on multi-player and wanted to ***** about it on a website full of his fans? Also, Yahtzee enjoyed team fortress 2, his only problem with it being a lack of variety in the maps that were out at that time.
Did you read his extra punctuation thing? He said that he never played. He only really looked at it for the review.

Well, tastes differ, I suppose.

I think it's the best multiplayer game over.

The earlier battlefield games didn't even *bother* with a singleplayer campaign. The closest is being able to play on the small versions of some maps with dumb bots. Despite this they're amazingly fun games.

On the other hand if you're going to put in a singleplayer mode in a game focused on the multiplayer I really, really wish it was either done well or just cut like battlefield to allow more focus on the multiplayer.

Well, actually, I really like F.E.A.R., I just don't care for the multiplayer. That was so bad that Monolith wound up giving that portion of the game away for free, just to get people playing. However, I play it for the single player, which is excellent. I haven't actually played the Bioshock games, since my computer can't really handle them, but I know enough about the series to know it was another example of a solid single player game with tacked on multiplayer. My point with that was that they were single player games, which had a tacked on multiplayer mode, but the tacked on multiplayer didn't make them bad games overall, any more than an excellent multiplayer game with a tacked on single player mode would be a bad game on the whole.

HERESY! Prepare to be purged!

No, but seriously, TF2 would be the worst game in existence by that logic, but it's actually pretty fun according to most people.

Honestly? If Multiplayer is good enough, singleplayer is not even needed.
