...what would you like to see done? Would you want them to keep the game mechanics (materia, new weapons as upgrades, weird inbreeding minigame)? Or would you want them to change a few things (upgradable/customizable weapons, real-time battle, weird inbreeding minigameS)?

I would personally like to see everyone just stick to their iconic weapons and just upgrade them. Then they could start using weapon experience and levels, a game mechanic I think is brilliant.

Also, I'd like to see Square-Enix mess with our brains. Y'know, we're doing the well-known motercycle chase thing to escape the Shinra Building (spoiler alert), but suddenly the highway collapses near Sector 7 and you have to fight the rest of the way out of Midgar. Little changes like that.

Special note: I don't think Aeris should ever be made to be revived (spoiler alert)... but I think her death should be ambiguously shown and it comes out that Cloud killed her.

Mostly, I wouldn't say to change much. This may get lengthy. I always wanted a remake of this game, because I know once they did it, they would make a TON of money. So...!

{1} Nah, don't do the upgraded weapons thing. Too much of a reminder of...Final Fantasy 8. Besides, I liked some of the cool weapon designs IN the game. Force Stealer, Atomic Scissors, Nail Bat, etc. Fun stuff. Perhaps we might change the nature of Cait Sith's[ weaponry or Nanaki's. But no, keep weapon/armor system and keep materia too.

{2} Small changes and plot twists would be fun. The idea of fighting through the rest of the highway and then concluding that with Motor Ball (the boss battle at the time) ramming through the wreckage to fight would be nice. Using the Manipulate materia to mount a large monster would be cool as well. While we're at it, visiting other sectors of Midgar would be nice as well.

{3} Mostly, what we want here is a graphical update, which is the most daunting of their tasks, really. Keep alot of the things that gave it charm, down to the monsters dying my turning red and vanishing, but make it look much nicer. People would buy.

I wasn't thinking of FF8... thanks for that, by the way... but more about how Fable 3 did things, but more expanded upon.

This is offtopic a bit, but I think I'd enjoy a rpg in which the PC didn't level at all... instead your weapons did. Your weapons would have their own stats and abilities on which you could spend experience. Of course, you'd gain experience for a weapon by that weapon in battle.

If they did make a remake which I so want :) I have no idea on how they are going to represent the world map in today's graphics. They could either do it like 10 with the airship but you only get that like halfway through. but if they go full out inmagine all the fun you could have with that little buggie :) and the chocobo's

Hmmmmm...
FF7 is wonderful the way it is.
The only problem ? Aged graphics/models. I'd like to see it similar to "Advent Children". :)

Up the graphics to current standards, both fmv and environments. The pre-rendered environments, as much as they still look fine, don't move or provide much depth. Other than that and redoing some of the translation ("This guy are sick" etc) I'd keep everything as is.

As far as the soundtrack is concerned, it would be great if they remastered it but gave the option to switch between new and old. That's something I feel the older remakes could have done with, especially 5.

If it were to be remade I would like them to slightly clean up the graphics and throw it at the 3DS or Vita. That is all.

Hey, if they update the graphics and maybe remove/alter some bits, I'd give it a look.

For me I want mostly a graphical update. If any changes need to be made, make sure it's just to accomadate the Compolation so canon isn't confusing.
Dialogue could definately use an update. "This guy are sick" is not good dialogue.
Change the music from Midi files to full orchestra.
Bonus dungeons would be awesome as well, including a few Superbosses. Maybe even a few from other games.
If I had to make a plot change, then make it clear what happened underneath the Highwind.

Agreed! But it would be awesome if they added little details that reference things that have happened between the original and the remake... possibly like minor characters from Advent Children appearing, or refer to things that happened in the prequel (I forget the name).

Honestly, I'd hardly change it at all. Except for the bloody movement system. My thumbs hate me because of it. The horrible dialogue, hilarious though it is, could definitely be done right this time. The graphics... well, I don't care if it's not 13's level. PS1 era was fine, though 7's were the worst of the three. I don't love it for the graphics, though they are iconic I'll give it that.

Update the graphics and improve the movement in the world and I'd be happy. I found the game pretty much perfect as it is in all other respects.

The materia system is awesome. I really don't understand why no one has used a similar system since.

Clean up the graphics, maybe rebalance the materia system a little (with in-game hints to the more powerful setups, for example), maybe remove a few of the more blatant exploits (selling mastered ALL materia for a damn fortune, for example), add a few more side quests to keep in line with some of the updated canon... and give Vincent a better set of limit breaks. Especially the Chaos. I also support the graphics switch idea said above, and would calll for a mix of the classical MIDI files and orchestra for the soundtrack, as well as sound of the fan mixes. A wider variety of combat music would also be appreciated, especially bosses (Adrenalyne Kick for Motor Ball is a must.) Also, an upgrade to the final final boss battle. You all know the one I mean. Speaking of bosses... new optional bosses would be appreciated, but ruby and emerald should stay. Better rewards for beating them would be nice. Can anyone actually beat them without already owning a Gold Chocobo for example? Another slight issue would be making the final bosses harder if youve already beaten Ruby and Emerald, cause he's a bit of a pushover in the original. Okay, rant over. :p

Honestly, I'm almost always against remakes on principle, as they usually just mean some new IP or project is sitting on the shelf somewhere. This goes double for Hollywood. However, if I were suggesting changes, here's my $0.02.

1) Keep the characters somewhat cartoony, rather than trying to make them realistic. By now the characters' slightly deformed look is iconic. That doesn't mean leave the graphics untouched, but keep it stylized. Keep the characters silent protagonists without voice acting. They've gone too long with players providing the voices to have it screwed up. Cringe-inducing bad voice acting (FFX), especially if it contradicts the previously silent protagonist's characterization (Metroid: Other M) and long-winded exposition blathered at the player (MGS IV) are not fun. Good writing with minimal voices (PS:Torment), no voices (Chrono Trigger), and well-characterized protagonists who don't speak (Portal, HL2, earlier Metroids, Zelda series, KotOR, etc, etc, etc....) are far better.

Unless you get Jennifer Hale, but hey...

2) Eliminate the hours upon hours of grinding necessary for the game. If players want to breed birds, fine, but players should not have to do that to find end game content. That's not longevity. If ME2's scanning mechanic proves anything, it proves players HATE doing endless chores just to earn an upgrade even if it's necessary for the denouement of the game. JRPGs of that era somehow got a pass on that, but that wouldn't age well now. If it cuts down on hours of "gameplay," that's good.

3) While we're at it, over-the-top, even absurd animations are par for the course for FF series. However, brevity is wit. Keep them as ridiculous as you like, but get them done within 20 seconds max. This is Fake Longevity in TV Tropisms. Three words: short, dynamic, explosive.

4) Difficulty slider. I've never understood the JRPG aversion to scaling challenges to the player's ability. I recently picked up a 3DS and found an old copy of Chrono Trigger. I'm at the final boss having seen zero game-over screens. No grinding, just found the game easy. Take a clue from WRPGs; not every player finds your game equally challenging. I'd go so far as to include an "story" mode where the players simply don't bother with combat and trip from event to event to re-experience the story. (JRPGs rarely have any role-playing; they're story games with RPG elements. Why not let players who simply want the story have it?)

5) Bundle in the various movies and emulated copies of the rest of the early FF library if you're even thinking of charging full price.

6) Go through the dialog, clean it up a bit, but keep the better weird translations. Not every player gets it, but some of the reason JRPG dialog can be fun is due to Japanese methods of expressing an idea not translating well to English.

7) All tutorials are optional. All cutscenes can be sped up. Period. While we're at it, fast travel when moving through uneventful areas.

8) Fix the gameplay/story disconnect with Aerith. FFVII gets a lot of slack here (you know, when Bahamut's summons should cause some kind of ecologic disaster and characters can't bypass a guard standing in their way but can cleave a fifty foot dragon in two in one hit), but this one ruins its emotional impact on the player because they're confused as to the rules of the world.

I think that they should better encourage you to use the different party members.

That was one of the biggest problems I had with the game. Once you had Cloud, Tifa, and Cid, you rarely had any reason to use anyone else.

Why? Because their only differences are their limit breaks. And some are WAY better than others. Highwind is amazing, for example, so you'd have to be crazy not to include Cid in your party.

As much as I loved the materia system, it led to all the characters being almost exactly the same. If they remake the game, they need to change that. Give me a REASON to want Yuffie, Cait sith, or Nanaki/Red13 on my team over someone with a better limit break.

Oh, and a better explanation of what the heck is going on would be great too. As a kid, I didn't understand what the hell was going on there after the first visit to North Crater.

1. use the battle system from Final Fantasy X-2
2. change the world map travel to resemble that of Dragon Quest VIII
3. make all stories from Before Crisis, Crisis Core, Case:Tifa, Case:Barret, Case:Denzel, Advent Children, and Dirge of Cerberus connect with this one
4. weapon/materia system is fine as it is maybe create a couple character specific materias and change the names from Fire 1, 2, and 3 to Fire, Fira, and Firaga. I would also like to battle against EVERY summon before it turns into a red materia
5. add more date options and the ability to couple up the other characters and they go on their own dates at the Gold Saucer. Look at my avatar and tell me you wouldn't want that

and I guess they'll have to change all the times Tifa calls people "retard" and when going up Shinra stairs Cloud and Barret won't look up her skirt anymore, the way Cid treats Shera will probably be toned down

Okay, they ignored five different rules of physics there anyway, the body not floating didn't bother me. No no, what I meant was: Since Sephiroth was, pretty much, an illusion until released by Cloud in the Northern Crater (spoiler alert); then, even though everyone saw Sephy kill Aeris... it was really Cloud stabbing her in the back.

That's not an exploit, they totally put that in there on purpose. I'm not a fan of hand-holding, so no hints... but a professor who studied materia (primarily) would've been nice. He could be in Mideel.

1)Except that every character, even Cloud, already had dialogue. Print them out and you have a script. Put it on a second track and let us mute that track, that would work.

2) You could totally beat the final boss at level 50 without getting any of the unlockable, kill everything, items. Especially KOTR... that killed everything in one shot... except the Weapons that are Ruby and Emerald. The grinding was indeed for extra content, not end content.

3)The quote is "...brevity is the soul of wit..." and it was said by Shakespeare's most verbose character (EVAR) in an ironic way. That being said, yes, Square-Enix's habit of making movies instead of games should stay far away from this.

4)Wait, why'd you just make point 3 if you turn around and say you'd like a "no-game" version?! Then... what's wrong with just getting a huge movie? Just because you didn't like grinding doesn't mean that you should encourage them to make a big long cutscene.

5)That is a bigger discussion than just FF7 remakes. Enslaved costs as much as Fallout 3? Uh.. bwuh... nani? Seriously, that just sounds like an "extras" disk on special editions that cost the same.

6)Nothing in FF7 will ever compare to "Talking makes you die" from Dragoon, so fixing all of the dialogue wouldn't be getting rid of anything wacky.

7)..you... you don't like playing JRPGs, do you?

8)Really? This is FF7's midichlorians, man. Do you really want a scene where some scienist just exposits "Sephiroth's weapon is a fascinating thing that permanently kills whatever he stabs after falling 50 feet"?

Or maybe a scene where Aeris' ghost shows up and explains that she was going to need to die anyway to actually reach Holy? Because, guess what, that's what the science really was. It just wasn't explained because none of the other characters knew (including Copenhagen). Did you really think she left EVERYONE behind just go pray and come back?

I think the first Dark Cloud game for the PS2 had something like that.
