I'm not going to get in an arguement because my lil brother JUST got a PS3 so I have no idea what the online is like for that system but I actually like being able to talk to my friends who are playing other games while I am playing a different game than them
I'm not looking for an argument, I'm genuinely curious. xD

Cross Game Chat? Yes we know we're missing that, it's one of our most wanted features. xD

O gosh that would be bad, booting to home ugh. Now I can press the xbox guide button and be in a black ops lobby in 15-30 seconds. Why would I want to launch to some environment I wont use. I whine about lag between menus in games, i'd be pissed having to load new areas for things.

xbl launch game, press guide button tab, tab send party invite, done. I'm now in a chat lobby with all my friends playing whatever game we want. Its never a good idea to add fluff to what should be a simple menu+text based interface.

Booting to home would kill PSN,. Imagine if your android or iOS device went to facebook app everytime you launched your browser. It makes no sense to take time for something that the majority of users won't want.

What they need to do is get more games onto PSN because XBLA has a lot of games like Shadow Complex, LIMBO, and Splosion Man. And cross-game voice chat would be really nice.

I love Home and it sounds like a great idea. But I played it a long time ago and I was totally missing out on stuff like steaming music to other players and stuff like that.
Perhaps they've fixed it by now.

One possibility for improvement to PSN would be to team up with Skype, yeah? Not much would need to be done, if anything, with the hardware, and then you could talk to other people as well, or something. Sorry if this idea has little coherence, it's nearly 2 and I should get to bed.

Definitely do not make Home mandatory, though, I'm sick of making stupid little avatars that no-one is ever going to see, and I am probably not the only one.

You don't get it. The only way PSN could rival XBL is to charge money for the improvements. Then they lose the price advantage. You can have cheap, or you can have good. Both sides offer one, but not the other.
I disagree completely. I think the PSN is well on its way to rivaling XBL, I mean we're missing, what? A few extra features no one cares about and Cross Game Chat? While XBL charges, the PSN doesn't so that right there knocks the PSN up a few notches in terms of equalizing the two. Plus the servers for Sony are pretty good, unlike some morons the system updates aren't hardly as constant as people claim and the servers don't go down often, and I'm always on there. So, PSN can definitely approach XBL with or without charging, it just takes a bit more to get there without, but then that ALSO adds to the quality, since you aren't being force to pay.

Edit: Perhaps "features no one cares" was strong, but I can't actually recall what we're missing...
The things you are missing are the things people care about. No one gives a rats ass if they can stream netflix.

Or you could just get SONY to stop faffing about targeting XBL and start targeting a real online system, like Steam.

True cloud gaming, massively faster downloads, much better prices, all kinds of chats and groups and free dedicated servers.

Heck, Steam's menus would translate brilliantly to a XMB-style layout.
Steam is coming out on the PSN Valve announced that back at E3
It is? Never mind then....

PSN is already bigger and better than XBL.. think they said over 60 million users on the PSN. As for download speeds, I got the ful DC Universe Online game downloaded and installed in about 2.5 hours. Thats over 14gigs, PSN for me is as fast as I need and ive never had any issues with it.

As for the chat crap, I could care less I dont need to babble to my pals like teeny bopper bitches laying on their beds talking on the phone twirling the cord in your finger.

I think PSN is alright as it is. It needs a lot more variety and amount in terms of games compared to that of Xbox Live, and cross-chat is the next step. Once this Playstation Rewards scheme appears it will be very good for all those on PSN, especialy seeing as Xbox Live was supposed to be doing something like this, and failed to follow it up.

On the OP's comment, no no no no no. Home is a horid application and a failed version of Second Life. That plus it charging for any aspect of customisation and the first time I spoke to someone they were French, constantly dancing and once I moved away they kept following me...and danced some more.

That would just be a pain in the ass. Home takes ages to load as it is so I never bother with it, its always updating. To boot up to it would take far too long.

It's already better than Live iMHO because they seem to be able to have a higher player count.

Home needs to be trashed and forgotten.

PSN is fine as-is imo. It's there off to the side if I need/want it and it's off on the side out of my way the rest of the time. Sure, I'd like to see a bunch more of the old "Classic" RPG's make it onto the PSN Store, like FF IV and VI, Bahamut's Lagoon, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore, ect ect. But I can live without.

No. No, no, no. They need to drop Home and focus on having more people with headsets (so the silence stops crushing souls), better voice quality, and cross-game chat. Until these things are implemented, my PS3 will be nothing more than an overpriced Blu-ray and Netflix player.
I know I'm going to be in the minority here, but honestly? I really don't want PSN to be louder. Already playing some of the more popular games online demands muting the most irritating speakers within seconds of starting. Call me cynical, but given that the average age and gender of gamers is no longer 12-17 male, I don't feel an overwhelming need to hear these people more than I already do.

Cross game chat isn't a feature a lot of us really need to have. I don't use my console as a phone system when I'm playing games; I play with my friends and talk to them whilst playing.

"Crushing silence" to some is the refreshing lack of XBox Live "Greater internet jerkass syndrome" to the rest of us. I applaud Journey for not including voice chat for more reasons than one.

Could PSN and Home be improved? Sure. But I don't think making it more like Xbox Live is the answer. Sony's already proven themselves well able to actually differentiate themselves from Microsoft...I don't think following that lumbering beast is the answer.

For what it's worth, I find PSN's interface to be far more elegant, tasteful, and nicer to use than anything on the Xbox.

I think the big problem is that the Japanese were late comers to on-line gaming. Microsoft built upon nearly a decade of on-line PC gaming and had a solid advantage coming out of the gate. The Japanese embrace split-screen multi-player and seem to be slightly baffled at our love on on-line gaming.

If PSN started charging for their service, they'd probably destroy it unless they had a firm grasp on what users really wanted. PSN Plus is pretty much proof of that, as they approach it only from the perspective of an on-line store... and not a very good one at that. The service simply doesn't offer enough perks to make it worthwhile.

This is one of those cases where Sony will have to spend money to make money. They need to take a good, hard look at how XBL operates and steal everything that isn't nailed down... which is largely what Microsoft did with PC gaming. If they craft a first-rate service that rivals XBL then they can start thinking about charging for it. Such as, what if they offered free on-line play to all, but introduced a premium service that offered greater game selection tools. That way they don't lose the bragging rights to free on-line play, but can offer a much better service to those willing to pay. And they should probably start off with a free Beta to fine-tune it and let players know exactly what they'd be missing unless they cough up some dough.

And they need to work on their on-line store. There are things I like about it, but I love that XBL lets you check for content for games you have in your library. And when you're selling DLC, that's something any service should be offering. And XBL's trial demos for Indie games is a great selling point.

I think Sony will get there sooner or later, and they'll probably get there long before Nintendo, because they're the third place company that simply can't be complacent if they're to remain competitive. The way they've fixed up their image after the disastrous PS3 launch shows they're willing to do what it takes to turn the PS3 into a success.

For what I use it for, PSN does it's job. I don't pay so I'm not after anything fancy. My only complaint is a lack of party chat.

It sucks that if I can't be arsed to boot my PC up, I have to sit in the chat room to talk. Whereas I'd rather have the chat running in the background so I could talk to some mates and play a single player game. Right now we're being forced to resort to Skype and TeamSpeak. And besides, the ingame chat for a lot of games is rubbish anyway. Uncharted 2 is the best I've come across on the PS3 so far (don't play online much).

EDIT

I see where you're going OP, I really do. If Sony could make Home a tad more streamline, then perhaps it would be a good idea after all.

Nope sorry, not everyone is a Second Life fan like you are. I prefer a heterosexual gaming experience.

Well this is a nice and constructive post, isn't it?

Anyway, while that might be a nice option, I would completely and utterly hate it if it were mandatory.

My PS3 takes long enough to load up, I don't want another thirty second wait to access something I hate, and wouldn't use.

And without the XMB, how would you send messages, invites, that sort of thing while playing a game? How would you even send them at all?

At the very least, they could improve voice chat functionality. That would go a long, long way towards helping.
