I learnt that the moderation of the escapist is HORRIBLE.

I'm just saying that a lot of the time people get warnings for no good reason.

The Escapist taught me that everyone has an opinion, and they should all be respected whether you agree with them or not.

Seriously, I was an ignorant bastard before I came here. I was like 11 or 12 then but still. It's nice to not get annoyed when someone says something you disagree with ^_^
I came in with this, and left knowing that you don't have to respect opinions you disagree with.

Someone here told me that, if he was given the choice between murdering a homeless man for his sandwich or leaving him alone (The killer would not get caught, and is only peckish, not actually hungry) he would kill him. The user has since been banned though, but still.

He would do it because it benefits him since he now has a sandwich. I do not respect this opinion.

That there are a lot of old games that I've never heard of and really need to play... eventually.

It taught me that gamers aren't the delightful calm geeky people they are and that the intelligent portion of them are in large part pretentious pricks. Also that Mario and Zelda still exist.

Nobody can take a joke and that all moderators officially suck ass
Please don't ask for penalties by disrespecting the site, staff or mod team. We're here to help you.

You're making us into what you fear by blatantly saying that. If you hadn't, no one would take issue with you.
I think the last thing that guy expected was to be talked to by a moderator like they are a person. Wonder what the reaction will be. Its easy to hate a title. An authority figure. Its hard to be mean to a person or badmouth the face behind the title.

People are people behind the screen names. Treat them like you would in real life. Its amazing to see the sudden hate and rage people spew sometimes, if a conversation were on the same line in real life, even to a complete stranger you didn't know (thus anonymous) you would never be this rude. I try and remember that, this forum taught me these things.

That even if you tear someones arguements to pieces they still wont change their opinion, they'll just stick their fingers in their ears and go "lalalalalalala I cant hear you!".

And that very few people (myself included) on the internet have any communication skills.

Beat me to it D:

That people really like PC's, possibly a bit to much :p
So is shipping, don't forget shipping.

OT:

Gamers shouldn't be ashamed of their hobbies and in fact be proud about it.

I learned that having a religion makes you an inferior creature of lesser intelligence and that you can't reason with people who say stuff like that

That the only thing people hate with more fury and disgust then right-wing politics is Call of Duty and if you like either then you're a twat.

But other then that, that the Escapist is the most civil and respectable forum I've ever been on.

That playing games can kill you or turn you into a rapist or even teach you how to shoot up a bunch of people.

That quite a few people have massive, easily bruised egos.

Did you really need the Escapist to learn that? :p

OT: I have learned a whole lot from Extra Credits, and also from the forum-community as a whole. But the one thing that stands out is that "if the last ____ you ____'d is now ____"-threads are the most boring way to spend time, that I have ever tried.

Well it taught me that:
I'm a moron
People have opinions
Children are evil
COD is trash
COD is only for children
Portal references are overused
Everything is overused
Religion is for idiots
Every game is art
Politics are complicated
America sucks ass
There is no reason to have faith in humanity
Everyone here is a "genius"
Cynicism is a second language
Common phrases are retarded
TV tropes is trap
90% of everything is crap
Older people like MLP:FiM
Videogame characters will constantly want to have sex/kill/dance/or live with you
Your avatars are the same as videogame characters
We're all gonna survive the zombie apocalypse
Most of us are full of shit
We're all hipsters and haters
"Everyone's an idiot, but not me of course"

And that's pretty much it. Whether or not I believe any of it doesn't matter, but here's what I've seen and "learned."

Oh and I almost forgot:
People actually think what they post on some internet forum actually means something.

Did I forget anything?

It's that the internet isn't a complete hell-hole after all.

I love this community. People are very funny, random and nice.

Edit:
Quite a lot like this really funny blog [http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/].
This is no advertising, just a tip I think a lot of you might enjoy. Read some random articles and you'll grasp the idea.
