I've chosen Half Life 2 as a comparison to Citizen Kane because it does what other media can't and that's telling most of the story through the environment.
It's not the first, nor the last, that will do this but in my mind, this is the game that sticks in my mind as it creates a whole new world with only the settings.

And I've chosen Duke Nuken: Forever because of what an ungodly mess of everything games shouldn't be. Which is why it's aptly compared to Plan 9 from Outer Space, which is what movies shouldn't be.

So, Escapists, what are your Citizen Kane and Plan 9 games and why?

I think I'll go with Alan Wake as (in my view) "best" (that is, best, not favourite) game in the same way the Citizen Kane is the "best" movie. For those of you who have played it, there is no explanation needed. To those who haven't, then I feel sorry for you. I really wish it wasn't an Xbox 360 exclusive in the first place. Phenomenally perfect game, outstanding and inexpensive DLC, it automatically gets my vote.

For the equivalent of Plan 9...I'll also go with Duke Nukem Forever. Not ever in my life have I seen a game so hyped yet so bad. From being one of the best games ever to the biggest failure, Duke Nukem Forever, to say the words of Calvin Coolidge; "You lose".

EDIT: I also admire your choice for the "Citizen Kane" of gaming. I would have also chosen Half Life 2 in a heartbeat but I wanted to be more original.

Why is it everyone sees Duken Nukem Forever and immediately forgets Atari's E.T. exists? They never buried copies of DNF.

Citizen Kane: American McGee's Alice. Never was an existing idea ever taken to such a dark and interesting new extreme. The enemies themselves are metaphoric representations of Alice's shattered psyche.
You need to Jabberwock's Eyestaff to get into the Queens domain? Well the Jabberwock is the embodiment of her guilt, the queen's domain is the home of her fractured psyche, blah blah blah, you do the math.

Plan 9: Bionic Commando (the new one). Let's keep in mind, I like Plan 9. It's a classic. There are far worse movies. And Bionic Commando, was just screwed. It's bad when you can say "Game X is what Game Y should have been." And Just Cause 2, is what Bionic Commando should have been.
You raise a very good point, and you are correct. I would also put E.T. as the worst game ever from what I've heard. However, I (and probably many others) have never played it for myself. Therefore, I cannot give it such a label. Thanks for bringing that up though.

If Dragon Age Origins is the Citizen Kane of gaming, then Dragon Age 2 is the Plan 9 from Outer Space.

If Chrono Trigger is the Citizen Kane of gaming, then... idk, Beyond the Beyond is the Plan 9 from Outer Space.

I had a hard time thinking of bad RPgs Ive played. Maybe that's a good sign?
Beyond the Beyond...I believe I own that. It's a PS1 game right? Is it really that bad?

I don't know about some of these picks... Saying something is the "Plan 9 from Outer Space" of game doesn't simply mean it is a game you don't like. Dragon Age 2, Oblivion, and even Duke Nukem Forever are way too good to be called "the worst game of all time". Don't get me wrong, DNF sucks, Dragon Age 2 fails to live up to it's predecessor, and Oblivion, well I like Oblivion. Anyway, my point is, to be called the "Plan 9 from Outer Space" of video game, you have to really suck in every way imaginable, but also have a cult following like Plan 9 does, so I would say ET on Atari or Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing.

Because, ET wasn't released with ridiculous lag.
Despite being flawed, shi*y game, ET wasn't very different form we got used to back then.
It was simply "bad game", not "bad, boring, overhyped, buried and needlessly resurrected game that got almost no attention from the fanbase it aimed at". Don't thank me citizen Unobvious. ;)

Repeat after me : You'll hate this hilarious movie, because it's good to hate it. ;)

OT : Skyrim -> Gorasul. :)

If Dynasty Warriors is Citizen Kane, then Sengoku Basara (The horrible knock off of Samurai Warriors) is Plan 9

Uh... well, its a decent enough game, and the writing's not bad (although the purposefully ridiculous rhetoric from Max Payne reared its head on several occasions where I highly doubt it was done on purpose). The pacing's off and the DLC is shit, however. I think anyone whose played Alan Wake and HL2 (or several other games) would need it explaining.

OT: Citizen Kane? HL2, Portal (2), Deus Ex (and I'd be quite happy for Human Revolution to go on there), The Witcher 2 . Separate (although not polar opposite) forms of storytelling in games, all masterfully done.

The shit one? I dunno, Two Worlds.

If Silent Hill 2's perfectly crafted story makes it the Citizen Kane of gaming, then Plan 9 must be the Alone in the Dark reboot.

If Persona 3 is the Citizen Kane of games then Tales of Legendia is the Plan Nine from Outer Space. I still enjoy every minute of both
