Several games NEED "proper" sequels.
- Legacy of Kain - This franchise was THE pinnacle of well-written and verbose verbiage with a mind-boggling story, unique, original gothic world of beauty and ugliness, heavy themes of fate and free-will, all delivered with arguably the greatest voice acting any game has ever received. It needs to come back... and come back BIG. "Darksiders" seems to fill in the void slightly, but nothing quite compares to the head-tripping journey of Raziel to defeat Kain, redeem his lifetimes of misdeeds, and find respite for his troubled soul.
- Prince of Persia (2008) - The "reboot" came out several years ago and ended on a huge cliffhanger. The promise of more Prince in a new game, one that answers a few questions about his enigmatic past while raising the stakes with the unleashed Ahriman reeking havoc throughout the world, was quickly ignored in favor of an ill-advised cash-in for the Prince of Persia movie with an unnecessary and pretty much ignored return to the Sands of Time trilogy instead. I love the Sands of Time trilogy too, but that story has been done and concluded, while the new Prince remains painfully far from closure. Does Ubisoft remember this game even exists?
- Beyond Good & Evil - Speaking of games Ubisoft keeps forgetting exists (unless its name is Assassin's Creed), this critical and fan darling, though mired by financial disappointment, has been a front-runner for most anticipated sequel for... well, a damn long time. The teaser for the sequel came out years and years ago, and we haven't heard anything really since. No screenshots. No publicly released teasers or trailers. Nothing more than constant "we swear we haven't canceled it". But fans are begging for proof of life, and all we have so far are empty promises and vague details. We needs the game especially since, like Prince of Persia 2008, it ended on a big cliffhanger with lots of unanswered questions.
- Darkstalkers - Capcom's second most popular original fighting franchise... but they treat it worse than a redheaded stepchild. Street Fighter has made a huge comeback in recent years, and the demand for more fighters, especially from the Darkstalkers crowd, is vocal and passionate. Even the creators want it to happen, but the bigwigs in Capcom keep saying no, not unless they get more letters asking for it. Well, over 200,000 people took up the challenge and wrote them, asking for it to happen. Their response? "Sorry, did we say 200,000? We meant 1 MILLION letters." It's silly; but Capcom is afraid of gambling on a cult favorite franchise, it seems, what with their reluctance to green-light Mega Man Legends 3 (no, they haven't actually approved it yet), their aversion to making a true Resident Evil game like the originals, and their desire to re-release older games again and again and again (how many different version of SFIV are there?), it seems like it'll never happen. Keiji Inafune outright boasts he defied their marketing and management to get Dead Rising and Lost Planet made... and it was probably that same mindset that drove him from the company. Darkstalkers needs a shot in the arm.
- Chrono Trigger - Both Chrono Trigger AND Chrono Cross are two of the best RPGs ever made. So... where is something new? Something just as beautiful, epic, and memorable as these two masterpieces of talent and passion? Sorry; Square's too busy making 9 Final Fantasy games and spin-offs, 4 Kingdom Hearts games, and ignoring their history of brave new franchises like Bushido Blade, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, and even Ergheiz.
- Metroid - Whatever your views on "Other M", it can safely be assumed that it split people's opinions. Half liked it, half despised it. Well, there's no reason they can't make a Metroid sequel that makes EVERYONE happy. You do this by... just following the successful Metroid formula that everyone from Shadow Complex to Arkham Asylum copy and paste to rave reviews and roaring financial success and fan appreciation. Let's get a Metroid game that goes back to atmospheric storytelling (not dense cutscene monologues), an emphasis on puzzles, exploration, and upgrading (not locked doors, linear corridors, and a painful "authorization" system), a Samus that hearkens back to the era when she was regarded as a pioneer for female empowerment in games that broke the mold on what girls in games could do and be (so don't make her a slave to some man, wear high heels in combat, and cry hysterically at monsters until some dude saves her), and just focus on what Metroid has always championed: a seamless experience of being in the game, instead of being kicked out of the game to be told expository dialogue, shown a long-winded cutscene, or shown a characterization that doesn't jive with over two decades of pre-built perceptions.
- Phantasy Star - No, not PS: Online... or Universe... I'm talking about PS5, a true sequel to Phantasy Star 1-4, four of the most original, expertly crafted RPGs of their time, and arguably the third pillar of old-school, amazing RPGs (alongside Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy). Sega needs to go all out and make a Phantasy Star that can give the top-tier classics a run for their money again, and with FFXIII and FFXIV leading to a Final Fantasy slump, now is as good a time as any to offer something competitive or even better.
