You could always try an Asian phoenix as they don't spontaneously combust.

Personally, I think a hydra or a Cerberus like fluffy could make a really good pet.

Edit: I just thought of it now, but a catoplepas could make a really interesting pet...and quite possibly a decent footstool.

Hmm, there is the complication of food source with most of these pets that I didn't think of initially.
