Like pride. If you have too much pride then yeah you become a conceited person that most people probably won't like, but it's not hurting anyone to be smug.

I'd say so some of the time. I say taxes are a necessary evil unless we all want to abandon civilization, and I definitely don't fault anyone for working at the IRS.

I'm not entirely sure the 'necessary evil' of taxation is in quite the same league as the 'necessary evil' of torturing and brainwashing someone until they lose all free will, but I suppose that can be seen as only a difference in severity, not a difference of principal. All laws limit our free will to an extent, and even raising someone with 'family values' is a mild form of brainwashing.

I'll be honest with you, I made the mistake of telling my co-worker what I was posting the other day and she - loving an argument - immediately swung in in defense of brainwashing criminals and I have been relentlessly mentally and verbally battered for the last four days.

The ability to be more selfless than we already are. So when we make decisions, its based more on whether they think it's better, rather than trying to assist themselves. eg not electing a certain party just because the taxes they take from you are less than the other party.
